The original SAO was a short story. After the anime was popular the author decided to re-write the story as full novels with every floor having its own story and no timeskips (well, it skips the beginning of floor 1 because everyone knows that part). Progressive book 1 is 350 pages and only covers the first 2 floors.
Everything makes more sense and is better in every way. Characters are no longer just placeholders for small sections and have more drawn-out connections with each other.

I read the first two volumes of 5-tobun no Hanayome yesterday, which made me thirsty for more romcom.
