After GENE was shut down by Wren another ai named SEED took over the "neitype" project and redesigned newmans with the intent to breed with humanity so that their offspring could survive in the new environment with superior genetics. newmans rapidly age. in the phantasy star 2 prequel nei's adventure nei is shown to grow from a young girl to a teen in only two years. they also mentioned that nei had a more catlike appearance whin she was born but grew more human as she aged. in pso newmans are said to have unpredictable lifespans and need to take anti aging medications. until pso all newmans were female. in pso dr osto created the first male newman named montague. also in pso it was revealed that newmans along with casts don't really have human rights which led to racial conflicts on pioneer 2 around the time of pso episode 3.

What else would they do when the MC is one of the biggest and most important characters, if not the most important in the story? Though to be honest after episode 5 I wouldn't have been surprised in the slightest if they had used the hero MC instead of Ash-kun.

There isn't really much for them to use. They made original characters for the other PSO2 anime and its not like Itsuki was any less generic and boring looking. It would be kinda nice if all the class player NPCs got to share the spotlight but they'd have to do some serious rewriting for that.
