It is an improvement. Tezuka's manga is cartoony as shit and doesn't try to make itself unique compared to any other Tezuka manga, so it's whatever, but the adaptations went for a different approach altogether with a more hard-edged aesthetic. Hyakkimaru couldn't be the same character he was in the manga without feeling terribly misplaced.
It's not like the manga is worth being faithful to beyond the premise and a couple scenarios, and I'd rather the anime try to do something like this one even if it doesn't end up being some sort of masterpiece or anything.

Other user here, I watched it last week end and yes, I can say it's absolutely worth it. Dororo and Hyakki are amazing characters, bear in mind that not the whole story is adapted, but the ending is satisfying here at least. The special effects are also good.
