I think it’s because Togashi has so many interests and to varying degrees of success he intergrates those interests into HxH. Some people can spot/appreciate those interests not saying someone isn’t intelligent if can’t spot it. Example would be the one picture comparing the cover art to what I assume is renaissance art.

For the record, neither of those 2 are asspulls. Hisoka's is slightly more bullshit since he was literally not breathing for several minutes minimum. Enel's heart stopped but that doesn't mean he completely lost consciousness. Both require a slight stretch of the imagination to remain believable in terms of the rules set by each world.

Alluka however is among the worst deus ex machina I've seen in manga/anime though; Hisoka became the meme because of the meme-worthy translation.

Because it offers philosophical insight and provides compelling character studies.
