Also Kill la Kill is arguably a magical girl show by this metric but not Princess Principal since nothing "magical" is happening with their outfit change.

Madoka is not a sub genre. Like most anime it's multi genre. It may have encouraged the creation of more works like it, combining mahou shoujo and horror/psychological but it's not Madoka's fault they're all vastly inferior.
