To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Hunter x Hunter. The characterization is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the properties of both rubber and gum will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Hisoka’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his Nen abilities- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of his abilities, to realize that they’re not just powerful- they say something deep about O. As a consequence people who dislike HxH truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the depth in Hisoka’s existential catchphrase “O My Rubber Nen,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I guess I started to like it it because I loved the weird normalized monsters and thought Killua was cool I was 11 at the time

But then again, I didn't even manage to drop Naruto, maybe it's all just nostalgia for the weird atmosphere and you have to get into it as a kid to really enjoy it.

its been fucking years, so forgive me if I misremember the build up. around the time the kids found out about nen they build someone up to be stupidly strong, and there's no way out, then they find a way out and run away.

The best way I can put it is what if shonen had a story where everyone acted like they would irl. It makes for an interesting concept, but the whole fucking time they build up 'you need fighting skills' and keep learning more and more but never put it into practice in a satisfying way.

I just looked it up, I must have ranted about hunter x hunter in a chat with a friend, because all I can find is be bitching to a friend how much shaman king sucks balls back in 2010 and that as bad as I thought hunter x hunter was, apparently it was my bar for fucking garbage back then, shaman king was worse.and one other time in 2008 I was asking a friend about the hunter x hunter manga because something felt wrong with the anime.

The philosophy of the Chimera Ants arc is not "hur humans are evil", the lesson to be thaught is that there is no such thing as a black-and-white morality, and that sentient beings are somewhat hypocritical and self-centered. Not innovative, not a conclusion particularly difficult to understand or to come up with, and not the only thing that makes it a great story arc, but very true and extremely well presented through the narrative.

For example, let's look at the Cell games when Cell threatens to destroy the world, a deconstruction of that trope, would be going deeper. Like, what would the economic landscape look like? Wouldn't everyone realistically live hedonistic lifestyles reminiscent of the purge since they would all be destroyed anyway? How would the average person be affected by that trope?

Look at the DCEU movie BvS for example, it shows and deeply explores the effects that the city-busting battles Superman partakes in, that we always saw in comics or in animation, have on the general public. That is a deconstruction of superman and superheroing in general. (Whether it's a good movie or not is up to you.)

HxH does neither of these things in any capacity. Everything it does has been done by a shounen somewhere somehow, HxH is good and it stands out because it applies all the typical shounen tropes that we love and know to an interesting world with interesting worldbuilding. Adding buzzwords like "deconstruction" and "subversion" to make it look more complex especially when you don't understand what the words mean only serves to kill the meaning of the world, make you look like a jackass, and perpetuate disinformation. Stop.

TLDR: IF YOU TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM THIS, TAKE THIS: BEING DIFFERENT =/= BEING A SUBVERSION AND SUBVERSION IS THE PRETENSE OF UPHOLDING THE STATUS QUO

It's not "what arc do you like", it's Why do you like it. So, characters and fights. I'll concede Hxh lacks quantity in fights and is usually more smart than dynamic on their execution, but the characters are stupidly nice. That alone should make you like It. Killua's nonchalant attitude, Hisoka's psycho boners, Gon's naivety... Though the best characters come starting episode 80 with the chimera ant arc.

Gon refused to yield despite a savage beat down by a stronger opponent, getting his arm broken, and then the threat of it being cut off and dying from blood loss. That's exactly what he was supposed to do, and he won when his opponent finally gave up and admitted that he couldn't break Gon's will.
