I really hate it when mangaka say they feel bad about killing a character horribly after the fact. If you feel so bad about it then don't do it. Kaori wan't even that much of an important character that killing her that way would have affected the ending or anything really.

The fact that you the reader/viewer are this mad means that Otomo made the right choice because he got an emotion from you even from a background character, most authors struggle to do that with main characters.

Was her death overkill? yeah but you're not going to be forgetting that or Akira as a whole anytime soon because of it.
