I think they could do Cannibalism in 12 episodes if they start right off with it and don't do any side stories. I'm really hoping it's split cour and we get a Fitzgerald arc, a Gin/Katai episode, Margaret's episode, etc. Would go a long way in fleshing them out.

That's mildly incorrect. As an author Dazai was multifaceted. He was, at core, a lonely scared child who was incapable of growing into a functional man. On the surface was playboyism, literary elitism, pretense, alcoholism and drug addiction, and a cool urbanity, all of which were merely acts to hide himself from others.
In the LN Odasaku comments that Dazai is "a child too smart for his own good" and that he gets into depressive fits because of it. In one of his short stories Dazai is writing about himself from a third person point of view (he's a background character in it, Das Gemeine) and it's said of him, "the expression of a child in anguish momentarily crossed Dazai's face". Those are VERY similar. The author of BSD certainly is familiar with the historic Dazai. The nature of the character is just rather subtle.

His constitution wavers and he can feel the tiger start to exert itself over him. Not wanting to give in, he reaches out to touch Dazai to nullify his ability.

I think that's implied. Dazai did have to take a gunshot just to find out what Dosty was up to, and if Dazai was as smart as him, he'd have realized that one, Dosty wasn't in the cave but rather at a cafe, and two, that putting him in prison was part of the keikaku all along.
Another thing. Dazai got himself captured by kyoka and the mafia just to find out who put a bounty on atsushi. then 2 episodes later fitzgerald shows up at the agency to exposition, pretty much erasing dazai's sacrifice to gain that information. That still bothers me.

Very familiar with that. One trick is to physically print the manuscript out, not sure if you can do that with subs.
iirc there was a set of the LN selling on ebay but it was $150. the information was scant, didn't even say what language, and no image available. I don't know why it's so hard to get the LN for such a popular anime.

What I do is first read through the dialogue box that's underneath the audio display for grammar/coherency/spelling/etc.
Then I'll go back and read through from the video for context/line breaks/etc.
Then I'll mux it and watch it in a media player for any discrepancies between Aegisub/player, and anything else I may've missed.
Printing it out is a pretty good idea, much easier on the eyes as well.
I'm hopeful that with S3 there might be something new with the LN.

From what I've read, I think the guys who scanlated the manga also put a lot of work into looking things up and getting names/etc right. I appreciate the notes that give some facts on the characters' namesakes.

A quick check reveals that at least one BD group used Impatience.
However, the subs are outdated.

I rewatched Bungou recently, and had the exact opposite reaction. I didn't think it held up well at all. I think it's because I absolutely fucking hate the "comedy" and the excessive incest shit. Everything outside that is pretty good, and the art is fantastic, but I didn't care for it upon a revisit.
That said, episodes 1-4 of S2 are absolutely some of the best things ever animated. It's unbelievably good compared to everything else, and should have been an OVA.

Odasaku is possibly my favorite fictional character, and his fight is one of the best things I've ever seen. And it's still not why I love his arc. Someone did something magical to make 1-4 happen. I don't know what it was, but I hope they can do it again.
