Wherein we discuss only that old shit. Modernfags are not welcome.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW

When this autistic dude fires a boombox in your ship and you don't even care enough to remove it.

God I love that show.

Stupid question but why is this not everyone's favorite Macross ever?

Because Dynamite 7 is a thing.
Those whales, man.

What's the point when you only discuss the same 20 shows.

I still can't get over the fact he and Mylene overpowered a laser beam that dwarfed a Macross Cannon in output by fucking shouting at it.

It needs a tighter control of the script. Earlier episodes were repetitive, didn't really add much and Basara himself was a rather static character for much of the series. Some of the earlier episodes can be cut/merged for the series to be much smoother. I mean sure, his music autism is the key aspect of the series and it does get good in the latter part but it can be a slog to get through the early bits. Also, the pointless attempts to continue with the love triangle.

In the midst of watching Rose of Versailles and my only regret was that I didn't start earlier. It's such a shame that Dezaki's aesthetics/style isn't utilized as often in modern anime (outside of the few usual parody).

Attached: [Dekinai] Versailles No Bara - 18 [600B0BAA].mkv_snapshot_22.jpg (960x1436, 599K)

I recently watched Frontier and it made me appreciate 7's slow burn more. Compared to that Ranka makes it big in only a few episodes.

what are the best pre-2000s sports anime?

Attacker you!

Saa hajimerazu SATURDAY NIGHT

I've been watching Saint Tail lately, 16 episodes in now. I'm really enjoying it a lot, it's super cute. One of the better romance anime I've seen so far.
I love Saint Tail!

Haven't seen much, but I really enjoyed Ace wo Nerae and Princess Nine.

Finished watching Touch. I really enjoyed it, but it's so hard to recommend it. The first season is really fun without too much dead time, but as the series goes on and reaches 101 episodes the character development and plot slow down massively. I enjoyed every episode on its own, but this could be such a terrific show if it was squeezed into 3 seasons, and perhaps the characters were allowed to be a bit more reflective about their life and actions. The overly cheery atmosphere and infusion of 80's pop culture turn it into an extremely pleasant watch, but the complete aversion from a realistic outlook on life also prohibits the characters from becoming too interesting past a certain point. It's great for escapism, but it also limits the emotional impact of the show.
One of the best parts about Touch for me is that in serious scenes the characters act in a believable manner. There's so many supposedly mature shows that are ruined by poor acting or melodramatic direction that it's hard for me to even give them a chance. A modern version of Touch would most likely be absolute trash with characters screaming out their feelings and drowning in angst, but it could also be a chance to fix some of the pacing issues, and add a serious tone that is sorely missing at times.

It's hard to say whether the show feels old or not. It's similar to Macross in the way the music and optimistic outlook could be considered old fashion, or rather be a selling point.
I'd say the show goes in my top 10, but it's hard to explain why. It's not overly deep or self conscious, it has 20-30 episodes that could have been cut, and most minor characters aren't really developed, but despite this I still watched 100 episodes and enjoyed each one.

Attached: 230px-Touch-vol14-AdachiMitsuru[1].jpg (230x336, 25K)

I began watching it once, saw like a few minutes, maybe half the first episode, but then the main character started doing evil rapey stuff so I stopped watching. maybe that was the only case but I'm too busy right now to give it another chance
will probably try EVENTUALLY though, but may be five years or so

>first episode
>triggered by muh evil rapey stuff
why the fuck are you watching pre-2000s anime? old shows don't give a fuck about that

Just finished Gundam 0079

Should I jump straight to Z Gundam or I should watch the other OVAs?

0079 ---> Zeta ---> ZZ ----> CCA
To get the proper arc of the Amuro and Char Saga. All the other OVAs can be watched later.

I'm not sure this is how bears and cattle work.

Attached: [Ushi]Katri_-_Paimen_piika_ja_emanta_23.mkv_snapshot_23.06_[2019.03.05_22.14.32].jpg (640x480, 41K)

They're just battling

It almost never happens in that way in the pre-2000s anime I've seen. It was especially bad in Touch. Usually it's more like "wow they can do that how refreshing" or "ehh this is quite problematic but fine it was made in a different time" at worst. But it isn't that common to have stuff like that in the fist place in what I see.

Will Lina ever be topped? No female protagonist comes close. It's embarrassing, frankly, that one girl can make the entire industry look so amateurish.

Attached: lina2.jpg (1509x1920, 461K)

Give me a quick rundown on Candy Candy.

The bear seems to be enjoying it either way

HOLY LONELY NIGHT

>Girl gets adopted,
>Shit happens,
>Returns to the same orphanage to work as a teacher.

The end.

>ehh
>problematic
what the fuck are you doing here? I knew keeping Titan threads around was a bad idea

I'm liking it so far. ropey characterization and plotting, but I admire how little of a fuck the show gives about any sort of consistent tone. And whoever here told me the art+animation sucks in an older pre-200s thread is a huge liar (that mecha shading).
greatest beach episode ever.

Attached: 61LaSPpHkTL._SX940_.jpg (500x375, 71K)

So how do we get from that to Sandy on Les Kassos?

it's almost like there's a reason people remember those 20 shows, instead of Dragon's Heaven or some other "cool" plotless hour long OVA

Probably because it was huge in Europe and latinamerica.
I've heard Italy hated the ending so much that they made their own manga.

Why would people watch
Angels Egg
And then praise it?
Almost nothing happens, and the visuals go to the point where the only cool stuff happens like each 20 minutes.
And nothing is done to fill that gap.

Attached: 1313129903159.jpg (1078x799, 62K)

Is this accurate?
animefillerlist.com/shows/trigun

Seems like if I watch the show without the filler there's almost nothing left, but I dropped it back in the day because it was slow, and bogged down by bad jokes, so maybe it's accurate.
Should I give Trigun another shot? I haven't watched it since the 90's and I rarely see anyone talk about it.

Attached: 220px-Trigun_manga[1].jpg (220x315, 35K)

What a terrible site

And the implication is that people should skip """"filler"""" episodes?

Haven't seen Trigun so can't help just commenting on the site in general

The filler is good. A lot of it is adapted straight from the manga's less important arcs, and even in the most fillerish filler, there's some decent directing/writing
(clever framing devices like Millie making a winning move in Wolfwood's chess game early on in that one episode, etc)
it's just a 20+ episode show, either watch it all or give it a pass, really..

I liked the 90s slapstick comedy, but YMMV. that lack of silliness is something I find really bland about this decade's stuff.

There's no "evil rapey stuff" in the show... though I can see why you might think that's the case if you judge it based on the first half of the first episode. Without getting into spoilers, it's well written, and takes a different meaning on rewatch.
The show doesn't have the sort of sexual harassment protagonist some old comedy shows have.

>It was especially bad in Touch
Really? I think there's more sexual harassment in one episode of Ranma 1/2 than the entire 101 episodes of Touch.

>discuss
I am hardpressed to call what happens in these threads "discussion".

Oh boy, then you better not see some of the threads for on-going shows where it's just people posting cute girls and saying it's their waifu (of the season).

I stopped when he tried to pretend to be someone he wasn't. That's really bad stuff. Maybe it's better than it seems, or that's the only moment in the show, so possibly worth watching, but at the moment, that was enough to get me to stop. May have been especially impatient at that moment too.

That isn't even the worst, Creamy Mami I dropped within the first seconds of the OP because the statement that "boys can't understand girls's feelings" felt really triggering. Too busy with other mahou shoujo to pick it up again, but will probably in the future, just didn't feel like watching it right then.

do you just drop everything that has any message or cultural context you have a problem with? that seems like a pretty exhausting way to live

>the statement that "boys can't understand girls's feelings" felt really triggering
Holy shit, you are one pussywhipped overly sensitive faggot

If you don't read the mission statement, the lists won't make sense.
This isn't a 'filler list site'
This is a site about 'episodes that deviate from the source material, i.e filler arcs'
I.e animefillerlist.com/shows/fullmetal-alchemist
Its basically adaption straightness

Attached: FMA_Bayex.jpg (685x600, 103K)

I'd say read the manga if you haven't yet

>dropped within the first seconds of the OP because the statement that "boys can't understand girls's feelings" felt really triggering
The fuck is even triggering about that?

I watched Tekkaman Blade. It was a bit padded out with monster of the week stuff, but was overall fun and a bit edgy in a good way. D-Boy level of suffering was depressing though.

Watching this right now. It's been about 9 years since I saw it last.

Attached: [EG]Turn-A_Gundam_BD_29(1080p_10bit)[5E5A9791].mkv_snapshot_00.10_[2019.03.09_19.19.47].jpg (1440x1080, 863K)

I keep hearing that ZZ is terrible and that it can be skipped, is that true?

Both statements are 100% false

No, I don't. And often I may really enjoy it. However, I don't like protagonists who are assholes, or that I can't root for in some way.
I was able to finish Now and Then Here and There despite the annoying anti-abortion message, and I consider it to be a good show.
Nadia had the protagonist keep pursuing the girl after she had made it clear that she was not interested, which is actually severe sexual harassment. However that was easy to explain away with the show taking place more than 100 years ago, and the main character didn't seem like a douchebag, he actually seemed like a good person that I'd already been given reasons to like.

No, I don't drop stuff all the time. Sometimes I may have very low tolerance, and may quit at that moment, but get back to it later, as I plan to do with Touch and possibly Creamy Mami.

It's sexist.

But please be careful with continuing this discussion. Talking about gender roles in old anime has value, BUT it has high potential of destroying the thread, so just let this discussion die unless you have well thought out things to say and actually want to talk about it seriously and in depth. And if you want to do that, I won't discuss it with you, it'll have to be with someone else.

Reminder that Basara never fired a single bullet in 50 episodes. Speakers don't count.

Great anime. It feels a bit dry and serious, but it's really good.

I rewatched the nuke scene on Youtube a few days ago, and it was still really powerful. I cried the first time I saw it.

Because it needed half the episodes, double the weak ass budget, and someone better to write the characters. And I'm sure plenty of people would have prefer things to be a little more controlled, where even in a series about pop stars singing in space battles to mindfuck your enemies, this show went too far and cranked the silliness up to 11.

>Xabungle is the only show that Tomino actually used the concept of evolution correctly

Its criminal how unknown this gem is. The OP alone is god-tier.

And that's the second time too, when he actually meant to do it

>terrible
A lot of people were turned off by it because the mood is drastically different from 0079 and Z. Going from Z, in particular can be weird as fuck because Z is super moody and angsty while ZZ is super goofy. Once you look past that drastic mood swing however, ZZ has its moments too. And no you shouldn't skip it; even though neither Amuro nor Char were involved, ZZ still should not be skipped as it ties up bits of story from Z and sets up bits for CCA.

>I rewatched the nuke scene on Youtube a few days ago, and it was still really powerful. I cried the first time I saw it.
Watched that one yesterday. There was some great sakuga in it.

Pretty sure he fired missiles. Maybe twice.
Beat me to it.

-watched Monkey Punch no Sekai: Alice, it was some of the worst garbage I've seen in my life
-watched 7 episodes of Zambot3, it was terrible
-watched Haguregumo, it looked nice for the first 10 or so minutes and then completely drops the ball in every department, especially the comedic one
-Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01, it was OK
-watched Mecha-ude, it was laughably bad
-watched Choujin Locke, it was serviceable in the visual department, terrible on every other front
-watched 13 episodes of Mai-HiME and dropped it; the first 5-6 episodes had me hoping and it was a really interesting start but then it just turns into terribly generic school drivel with some monster of the week to fight
-watched Dual! Parallel Lunlun Monogatari; a million times better than Nadesico and a genuinely good show until the final 2 or so episodes when it starts to be a tad too predicatable and some of the slapstick jokes and character interactions started to lose thier steam and became incredibly repetitive; all in all still a fairly enjoyable experience, was expecting way worse

Pretty good overall. I've gotten used to worse amounts of average enjoyment, or rather lack thereof.

Attached: 1532688651084.jpg (1280x720, 126K)

>It's sexist.
Acknowledging that different sexes are different and may process things differently isn't sexist. I swear, you faggots try too hard to preach equality that you over compensate and become too afraid to accept that different doesn't mean bad. And no, that shit you were squirmy about isn't even an old anime thing. That stuff is still a common literary element in modern works outside of anime.

You genuinely sound like a coward.

whoever OK'd the name "Xabungle" just warned it to fail

*wanted

Wait wouldn't you be wanting anime from the modern Era? Isn't it modernfags only? Are we in the contemporary Era? Please don't bully my I'm retarded friends.

>he doesn't know about the Tomino Naming Sense

47 episodes into Akazukin Chacha. I'm coming to the realization that it might be the greatest mahou shoujo ever.

Attached: Akazukin Chacha - 40 [DVD H264] [C6456164].avi (00.03.18.949).png (640x480, 428K)

It is great. But I am hot for Sheryl.

Without getting into spoilers, it is relevant to the rest of the show, though on first watch you'll miss what the scene is about.
These sort of "guy tries to molest girls" scenes aren't what this show is about.

Yeah... I get where coming from, but I think you got the wrong impression of the show. It is firmly rooted in the 80's and in the gender roles as they were presented back then in teenage pop-culture. These characters couldn't really exist nowadays, if only because the girl is presented as way too motherly and it's taken at face value - which is sexist, but not the kind of sexism that probably bothers you.
The "guy who molests everything as a joke" sexism isn't really present in the show. That said, he is somewhat of an asshole, but it is a story about him maturing as a person, so I'm fine with that.

The second part was meant for

Who isn't?

Attached: 1351085302178.jpg (2866x4097, 1.13M)

Kenshin OVA. I guess they lost a decent amount of the cels since practically half the last episode is in SD quality.

I'm not sure how far you got but it suddenly takes a turn for the dark and edgy halfway through.

I revisited it a while ago and it holds up a lot better than I expected it to, even though the manga's a lot more far reaching.
It has a lot of elements that eventually became signifiers of "anime schlock" (the extremely stylized character designs, Vash's pacifism, "if you kill the bad guy you're just as bad," all the meaningless theological symbolism, etc), which is a shame because it's not really Trigun's fault that all that stuff became cliche.

>cattle

Can ruin you. Yes, cows are dumb. They're also huge and powerful. The Romans enjoyed pitting animals against each other for fun. Once a cow was pitted against a lion, and the cow won.

And that's without getting into aurochs. You did not fuck with aurochs.

I've seen it three times now, I'll never get tired of it

"It's sexist" is probably a too basic explanation. While true, I think what bothered me about it may be how it also plays into a larger cultural context. The way it was said, at least in the subs, also felt a bit condescending. It plays into a "girls rule boys drool" mentality. Girls have superior emotional abilites, and stupid boys can't possibly understand. This also ties it into the disgusting girls culture we often see in real life and in media, where girls stick together, and are strongly othering against boys, and being strongly gendersegregating, which is something I don't like at all. People should be together regardless of gender, and this disgusting girls culture goes against that.

Thank you for explaining a bit about Touch. I do, like I said, intend to give it another chance. But I've already started watching Hiatari Ryoukou, so will probably watch that to where the subs end first. Watching two Adachi anime at the same time feels pointless.

I didn't really expect the show to be about molestation either, I think my biggest issue with that scene was the trickery and lying. I never really like stuff where people lie to others and try to keep things secret, even if they don't do something immoral. So that probably played a large part in it, not just the rapey aspects.

It has an actual esoteric story told entirely in visuals. You don't understand it because you actually have no knowledge to interpret it. Angel's Egg isn't just a pleb filter, it's demanding as fuck even to people like me who have 20+ years of research (as in actual scholarly books) under the belt.

It's that good.

And no, shitty youtubers and wiki articles won't help you. This is why I adore Angel's Egg. It is a treasure that makes no sense to people like you. "Cast not your pearls before swine."

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Angel's Egg. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head.

Guess I'll just delete it off my HDD since I'll never watch it anyway.

I was expecting that. In any case I'm glad Angel's Egg is half-forgotten, purely so that I don't have to endure zoomer nonsense regarding it.

You sound like trailerpark trash, and you likely are. Just wanted to let you know.

I'm amazed by how people can type out this kind of chuu2 stuff with a straight face.

If aurochs were so great, why did they go exstinked?

is there a rec image for pre-2000's anime

Not all of it is great though.

Attached: 1406393614170.png (2350x4700, 3.61M)

no problem. I just have been needing a list of older shows to go through.

ZZ is pleb filter.

This term lost any meaning once you people started to use it for virtually any terrible show in existence.

What shows do you want to be subbed?
I would kill for La Seine no Hoshi to be subbed.

Attached: Subbed 70s anime.jpg (2906x1680, 808K)

Fuck off, pleb.

Give me a list of non-shit shows that aren't subbed. From what I am aware, I wish the Gusty Frog subs would finally be done. Or rather, I'd like for someone to finally upload the entire bluray collection. Why the bluray raws haven't been uploaded yet is a mystery to me.

Apply yourself, ZZshitter.

I'm interested in Idol Tenshi Youkoso Youko. It may not be any good, but the concept is something that appeals to me. I want to watch anime about acting, and idols are also cool.

Other than that, I want Ace wo Nerae to be finished if it hasn't been in the last year.

it did the same shit every fucking episode

TV, then the movie.

You watch SDF first so you wonder why anyone gives a shit about Macross at all given the Okada tier writing it sports, and then watch DYRL to have your question answered.

did anime really exist before the 2000s?

i liked the movie even though it went edgy

I love the series, but you could have cut half of them and the flow would have been better.

And i think at this point i like frontier more.

so yeah i grew up watching 90s anime.

Akria
Ninja scroll
Ghost in the shell
Escaflowne
Slayers
Macross, Macross Plus
Cowboy bebop
Outlaw star
Eva
FLCL
Gundam Wing, 0083, 08th Team
Utena

I'm not sure how i feel that half that list is being remade today.

What meme am I missing here? None of these are or were remade.

>That isn't even the worst, Creamy Mami I dropped within the first seconds of the OP because the statement that "boys can't understand girls's feelings" felt really triggering.

It doesn’t bother me that the user was triggered and dropped it; it bothers me that they or people like the (or on behalf of them) will want to memory hole it and anything like it. Or at bare minimum fuck with the dubs and official subs.

Just saiyan

Mechander Robo and Ghastly Prince Enma, Raideen too if in progress stuff counts

Flcl was #kontinued

I watched CB Chara Go Nagai World and Eguchi Hisashi no Nantoka Narudesho!. The former was pure hilarity, and the later was a wild ride. The final skit and some of the more romantic ones were very creative and well done, but some of the early and middle stuff was a bit of a chore to get through, though not too bad. I really enjoyed it all in all. Last thing I watched before those was Yokohama Shopping Log, which had some of the best visual direction and pacing I have seen in an anime, but I found it a bit too unfocused and wish they would had spread things out a bit less. I was really interested in the conflict they presented at the end of episode 1 but they kind of just dropped it after that. I could see it become a new favorite on a re watch.

Anime last few years or at some point
New Ghost in the shell
Macross Delta, and probably something for the anniversary.
Eva 4.0 someday
FLCL progressive
Gundam w.e.

>making more entries for an IP is a remake
You don't seem to understand what the words you're using mean.

im about to watch trigun, dub or sub?

I tried them both and preferred the dub so that's how I watched the series, but then I later watched the movie subbed and found out that Wolfwood speaks in Kansai dialect. That made me regret it slightly, but it's a good dub. So just see which you like better from the first episode.

thanks m9

The general rule that no one likes to talk about is that people tend to prefer whatever they hear first, that's why the majority of shows that have their dubs recommended at all are shows that aired on Toonami or AS. Just pick whichever you generally prefer.

I enjoyed it. I really liked the art and atmosphere.

Straight outta tumblr

What the fuck happened to this thread.

Attached: 2019-02-21 20_55_44-Greenshot.jpg (2560x1440, 1.11M)

Honestly, the dubs that aired on Toonami or AS that actually get remembered fondly are the ones that were at least okay.

Awhile ago I mentioned that I was gonna watch everything made in 1991. Why that year? Because it was the year I was born, so wouldn't it be interesting to see anime that are old as me? Despite this challenge being borderline retarded when you really put some thought into it, I still went ahead and did it. I meant it. I've been going at this for almost a year and I still have yet to finish. but I already cleared a season and a few other months. I'm not really doing this in order, mostly just a random collection of anime. No idea if I'll ever see this to the finish, but hey, if I do, I can at least say that I saw everything from one whole year.

Also, I meant everything. Whether its subbed or not, OVA, TV series, movies, hentai, you name it.

Attached: 1991a.jpg (1335x2010, 952K)

Golden boy characters are the most /fa/. Anything else is utter garbage.

Course I knew that I wasn't really gonna watch everything made in 1991, you'll be surprised just how many of them are difficult to find or on dead torrents.

Anyway, first thing that I watched was this

>Shougakusei no Yuukai Boushi: Yumi-chan Abunai yo!

Synopsis: A video for kids shown in japanese schools to prevent against kid abduction

Thats it. A short little PSA that you can find on Nicovideo. Does this really count? Well, its listed on all anime databases. Also, perhaps this is just a decade of Yea Forums talking, but if I didn't know any better, just from that cover, I would think this was some obscure and screwed up hentai.

People stopped talking about Macross.

Attached: Macross 7 41.5 Movie (DVD) - (108e6838) Central Anime.webm (640x480, 484K)

what is the MGS2 of pre-millenium anime?

But yes, that's what it is. A PSA warning kids to beware of strangers. I can't really judge it as a PSA, because those things can venture into some odd territory, but I guess it succeeded with getting its main message out. Though I was questioning its educational value when Yumi (the little girl) was sucked into the video game she wanted to play and encountered some snake man. Whoever voiced that little girl had a really cute voice. Fortunately, I'll be hearing it again when she voices the main character of a 50 episode series released around this time.

>Summer 1991
>Oniisama e...
I also watched that only because it came out when I was born. I actually really enjoyed it.

That actually doesn't sound bad at all, maybe I should try it too. Apparently I've only seen a grand total of three titles released in my birth year. Speaking of which, does anyone have the charts for 1981, 1984 to 1989 and 1992 to 1995? I assume they exist.

Attached: Urusei Yatsura - 035&036 [BDRip 960x720 x264 AAC].mkv_snapshot_04.12_[2019.02.04_20.54.07].jpg (960x720, 78K)

U-Jin Brand aka as "Tales of Seduction" is a hentai released in December 1991. At least, its classified as a "hentai" by most sites. Now if you consider "hentai" to refer to simply animated pornography. You'll be pretty disappointed with this, and with many others from 1991 that are classified as one. Its odd. After all those early 80s hentai OVA, it seems like they just died out for a period of time before making a resurgence in the late 90s. Because most of those 1991 hentai aren't really pornographic or fappable. With this OVA, even though sexual themes are a prominent part of the story, the sex itself is not explicit and its brief. Either way, U-Jinn brand is an adaption of the works of manga artists "U-Jinn" and the OVA itself is divided into 3 parts. First part is about this song writer who gets to meet with the idols he works with and sleeps with them. He is obsessed with this one women who he thinks is his "childhood love". Pretty bland, but I will admit the last scene actually got a laugh out of me. Second and third part are two different stories, but they feature the same premises and mostly the same characters, which just makes the first feel like the odd one out. The premise is that Toyama is this ultra-suave super professional... rapist. People hire him to seduce women for various reasons. But since he's rich, he has no need for money. Instead, he collects ultra-rare video game cartridges, so whoever wants to hire him must
somehow have an item that he wants to add to his video game collection. Some women wants to get even with another women using her boyfriend, so she hires this guy. Then he seduces her. No forced sex involved, so talk about false advertisement. This is also pretty bland.

Attached: u-jinn.jpg (598x597, 75K)

GUYVEEEERRRR

SHOOOOOOOOOOOO

The third part is probably the most entertaining of the bunch because its so wonky. A fat guy gets to screw the attractive daughter (Tomoyo) of his boss because she literally cannot stop thinking about his cock, but he's in love with some other women. Tomoyo wants his father to get rid off the other women. He does. Toyama's women secretary also seems to be trying to help the fat guy accomplish his goal, even mentioning she's from "mossad" out of nowhere. So the fat guy, who loves the other women and wants Tomoyo to get off his back, he gets Toyama to rape her, and unlike last time, it actually is rape! And in the very end, Toyama calls everyone involved into the chairman office, exposes his cherry blossom tattoo on his chest to make everyone confess the truth. Turns out, the secretary was NOT helping the fat guy, the women he loved actually hated him and both she and the boss who fired her were actually in love with eachother. Tomoyo now prefers Toyama cock instead.

In short, this OVA isn't good, 4 out of 10, even the 3rd part was just confusing and stupid at times, but the animation isn't shaby. The thing is, that despite the whole thing having this weird ass premise, and even comedic things that are hard to take seriously, like Toyama hamy behavior, such as Toyama power of somehow resolving any issue by showing off his tattoo and yelling "THE STORM OF CHERRY BLOSSOMS WILL TAKE YOU TO HEAVEN". Its all grounded, so it never feels comedic, like its taking itself seriously. So you start asking questions like "what kind of CEO deals with some dumb lover's spat at the chairman office" and "is this even legal". The most amusing thing is how casual forced sex/rape is treated in this OVA, alien to certain sensibilities.

The most crazy thing is hearing some prominent seiyuus in here. Toyama is Kosugi Juurouta (Jotaro) and Tomoyo VA Kotono Mitsuishi would later voice Usagi, Misato. Morikawa Toshiyuki is there too.

Because Frontier exists.

It's known that pre-200 anime has the best anime tiddies ever drawn.
However, does it have anything in the cute feet department?

Because Yoko Kanno didn't do the music.

holy shit that's good

>Toyama is Kosugi Juurouta (Jotaro)

Doesn't quite beat that time he was in a gay porn.

>It has an actual esoteric story told entirely in visuals.
It might be, but the pacing is horrid user, which is why it has to be asked:
Why do people watch Angel Egg and enjoy it?
I am pretty sure you could cut it down to 15 minutes, just to remove all the random waiting around since they clearly didn't have budget to do anything with their animation.

In my own experience, reading Thus Spoke Zarathustra or Jenseits von Gut und Böse: Vorspiel einer Philosophie der Zukunft was painful.
But the content was really good.
Reading Nietzche is a lot like reading a manga with bad panelling, where reading will be slow because your eye movements won't actually help you reading it. The content is still good, which is why you keep on reading, but reading is painful.

Attached: Feminists.jpg (387x387, 47K)

Every moment in Angel's Egg is breathtaking due to the cinematography, art, music and especially the pacing, the animation is great when it needs to be as well. Engulfing you in the world of the flipped Noah's Arc is one of the prime goals of the film, and the slow paced ominous tour of it is absolutely vital to get what is at stake emotionally and thematically.

>due to the cinematography
Most of the movie is stills
>artistic direction
Its good, but there is a limit to what you can do with a hour of stills
>Music
Its good, but its never good enough to fill the lack of pacing
Its not exactly Utena or Wagner.
>Animation is great
The full 5 minutes of it? In a hour long cinematic experience? Yes
Its great
But its not exactly giving us any of that due being so minuscule.

I am merely saying that the Content/Length ratio is Angel Egg is so fucked that i don't get why people recommend it.
I have watched Shoujo series with better Content/Length, somehow. And that isn't a good sign.
The more you people talk about it, the more it seems you need to be drugged completely down to enjoy something that moves at the pace of drying paint.

Watched the Hello Hedgehog - Domain of Murder OVA a few nights ago. Nice little straightforward murder mystery that feels like a lost episode of Master Keaton (similar grounded aesthetic too). Dub is surprisingly good too. Don't think it's ever been mentioned on Yea Forums so hopefully posting it here brings some attention to it.

Also it just about edges close to the thread perimeter, but I'm 6eps into Blue Gender at the moment. Great mech vs bug action, but what's got me properly hooked is the underlying mystery behind what happened to Earth and the MC.

HAYATE NO YOU NII

XABUNGURU~

Saw Youma yesterday. Pretty typical late 80s OVA, dark, gory, feeling rather incomplete. I liked the way they blended traditional Japanese music with sound effects in the first part. Some of the monster designs in the beginning of the second part were also pretty spooky, but underused. I was definitely not expecting that ending though.

Attached: bosco-daibouken.jpg (600x354, 74K)

Because it's nigh unwatchable garbage. Every episode for the first 40 or so episodes is just: Basara is a fucking retard that gets saved by someone else and the colony gets attacked with no consequences whatsoever, rinse and repeat. The music is good but by about episode 20 every time I listened to Planet Dance I wanted to jump out a fucking window. The story is also fucking retarded and the villains are shit.
I love the first Macross but fuck this show, it's G Gundam but much, much worse.

It isn’t just stills though, the characters are animated while they walk around, the girl collects water, the egg breaks etc, it’s just regular competent animation but it isn’t just a series of beautiful background shots without any movement going on in them. The point is that the choice of scene flow, pacing and shot composition combined with the music and the symbolism rich high quality art along with seeing the two characters moving around is all of super high quality in terms of overall construction and all of its individual parts, and manages to show you what is important rather than telling you through normal dialogue or regular plot conventions. There is no lack of content, because every moment contributes to the whole in terms of delivering visual information and producing the atmosphere needed to properly deliver that information with the highest degree of emotional resonance. The time/content ratio is 1/1 at bare minimum.

I watched the Nora OVAs with a thread earlier this week. The first one was just dumb and goofy. The second was the worst shitpost of a production I have ever seen.

Attached: 92017.jpg (190x350, 30K)

Beyond the goofy filler G Gundam has phenomenally strong character development and a really excellent plot, it is way better than 7.

I watched Angel's Egg as well and there have been two dedicated threads for it since I watched it which surprised me. I guess it was just "A Guid to Christianity: The Anime" and it looked pretty cool. As I have said before I would be surprised it the creator of Bloodborne and the souls series wasn't a huge fan of it.

Youma is enjoyable to me as a fan of schlock OVAs, nice dark art design and the character designs were that great kind of highly detailed style you usually get from late 80s works, some enjoyable body horror and music too, but yeah, you can tell that it is an attempt to condense a longer manga into an hour and it hurts the writing, the animation quality is also a bit low considering that it is an ova from the peak of Japan’s economy. I’m quite nostalgic for it, I always got trailers for it in vhs and DVD rentals from the very early 00s when I was a 10 year old renting stuff like Ninja Scroll and Eva at the blockbuster but never actually got to watch it despite really wanting to, then I put it on one day last year not realizing that it was that anime that got away from me in my youth and had a good time.

I ended up enjoying Planet Dance but damn I also felt like you when I watched Macross 7

Why the fuck did they reuse that song so much when they had like 5-6 more?

hell, why half of the episodes even exist? They could've made it easily a 24 episodes show and wouldnt missed anything

I'm trying to work trough Urusei Yatsura and You're Under Arrest but holy shit there's just so fucking many episodes.

I also tried Bubblegum Crisis recently, but I somehow can't really get to it. It's strange as I expected it to be straight up my alley, but the characters so far are very underdeveloped and the scifi is somehow really cheesy and dumb. It goes from straight up cyberpunk to very soft scifi, and I feel there's a really grave identity crisis going on with the OVA.

Handsome Girl is a short 37 min OVA released in Jan 1992 and based on the manga whose author is more well known for Marmalade Boy. So I know I said I was gonna watch everything from 1991, so why is this here? Well, there was actually a surprising bunch of stuff on my backlog from Jan 1992, so I thought, fuck it, toss it in here too. Plus my interest was piqued since one review wrote that it had "vaporwave"-like music... Not sure where they got that impression, but there is a brief music video segment that appears in the OVA.

The story centers on Mio Hagiwara, a 14 year old actress who gets put off when a boy named "Ichiya" says her acting stinks. Turns out he's a promising director, and he wants Mio to be the star actress. Animation/Art is pretty typical for a 90s shojo anime, reminiscent of Marmalade Boy, gives off a pleasant feeling. In fact, thats what this OVA is, a very forgettable OVA that's still pleasant to watch. Always hard to exactly judge something like this, because there really isn't wrong it, but at the same time, you don't really care that you watched it, there isn't even any particular aspect to this OVA that stands out. At 37 mins, its not like this is a huge time investment, the story here feels rushed in certain aspects, like the love triangle with Mio, Mio's friend, and movie producer Ichiya. And even the romance between the main actress and Ichiya is brief, in the end they just hug. She goes from high school teen to young adult in the span of this OVA. Wasn't expecting much other then basic shojo fluff but the whole movie-making angle, their shaky and tentative sponsorship with "somy" plus the OVA starting with a quick scene from the climax, did get me invested in the story for a bit. Oh, and the title "Handsome Girl" sounds like just Engrish, but surprisingly, the whole "handsome usually referring to a male" does get highlighted in the OVA, and as Ichiya puts it, a handsome girl means a calm, powerful confident women.

I've been here for almost twelve years and the only title you mentioned I've seen is Eva. I've somehow managed to miss out on a lot of classic stuff.

Watch Ideon before you watch Eva by the way

It has 30 garbage episodes and 40 fire (bomber) episodes. It's pretty reasonable to not consider it very good.

So I just finished Toei's 1960s Orochi movie and coming from a guy that likes vintage anime movies this was on the high end of mediocre. The cast was annoying and it tried too hard to be funny (and flopped), that said it had a well done final battle. I guess Toei realized a lot of mistakes from this because their later anime movies from this era never bugged me like this did. It had a better Orochi than both versions Toho had.

Because Zero and Delta exist, 7 still remains the third best entry though.

Enjoy the hot blood and guts

To be fair, it was still quite an early Toei film.

>Gunbusters

The problem is not that he is from /m/. The problem is that he is a retard without self-awareness.

So I've been watching Hibari kun for a while, pretty sure I'm a full blown fag at this point. How is it possible for a boy to be this cute? How is it possible for a show this gay to air in the 80's? I guess they could get away with it because they just drew a girl, voiced it with a girl and called it a boy, but it's still pretty gay. I'm unironically thinking about what it would be like to have a cute trap bf, so the damage has been done.

So who's your favorite pre-2000 anime director, Yea Forums?

Am I allowed to say Oshii or is Yea Forums still tsundere about him?

It's ok to like good stuff in pre-2000 threads. What's your favorite Oshii anime?

Hiroyuki Kitakubo is consistently great. Shame he hardly got any jobs after 2000. And Katsuhiro Otomo, who is a multi-talent.
I greatly respect Mamoru Oshii, but he can get pretentious at times.

Time to watch LoGH then. If they watch Eva then you'll be Eva+LoGH twins.

Who the fuck is Thomas Cuthbert???

Attached: Thomas Cuthbert.jpg (960x720, 76K)

>What's your favorite Oshii anime?
It's kind of complex. Jin Roh has a special place in my heart as it got me interested in his works in the first place, but I have to say I probably think Patlabor 2 is my favorite of all his works. I don't mind the wacky stuff either, UY and especially Beautiful Dreamer were a fun watch.
>but he can get pretentious at times.
This is probably the most common criticism I hear. I understand why some of his stuff might seem pretentious, but I'm personally a sucker for slow shit and the types of messages he tries to deliver in general. His worst offense is probably in Jin Roh, and while I adore the film, the allegories were really heavy.

And is he related somehow to Matthw Cutbeer (1794-1831)

Attached: Matthw Cutbeer.jpg (960x720, 102K)

I feel Joe would have been a lot better if it was cut down to 52 episodes instead of 79. The best part of the show was Joe after Rikishii's death.

Jin-Roh is great but it's not directed by Oshii

this artstyle was the logical conclusion of anime. peak animeness. Everything before it was working its way to this level of anime, everything just gets slightly less anime and more boring.
it takes a while to get used to of you're not a 90skid but I kinda like it.

Probably the GitS movie.

are there any filler episodes I culd skip, or everything is filler.

Oshii is a genius no matter what the elitists say. Even his lesser stuff like Gozenso-sama Banbanzai is fucking great.
Also, he apparently directed many episodes of a childhood favorite of mine, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (literally just found out).

Frontier is superior.

But is it worth watching?

It almost happened at one point in the early 80s. Miyazaki had suggested that Oshii direct a Lupin film, and there were plans for it to go ahead and be produced. Also, before that, Miyazaki had the idea to make a spin-off film involving Lupin III's daughter and Fujiko Mine's niece 2 years after Castle of Cagliostro was completed, but that never went into planning. Miyazaki and Oshii talked again about collaborating with some OVA ideas, but obviously they didn't happen. Also, there's the Ghibli music video "On Your Mark" which resembles Oshii's stuff.

You can find out some more Oshii anime that was never released here if you're interested ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/押井守#没となった企画

It's an OVA from the 80s, so, it's dumb. I just enjoyed it for what it is.

the most distinguishing thing about the medium of TV shows is that it lends itself to narrative divergences ("filler episodes").
the idea of skipping filler only really came about with DBZ, Naruto and other longrunning adaptations where low quality filler was just churned out so the studio could stall for time. but anyone skipping filler in a mahou shojo is missing the point.

There's definitely no basset hounds or talking heads in Angel's Egg.

Best Gundam to date

Probably, I haven't seen it yet, but I did edit the scripts.

I've been watching it for the first time myself, and I'd say check it out. It's not great, but it's decent, as long as you don't go in expecting Zeta part 2. And not just the later half when it gets serious, but some of the early comedy stuff I thought was enjoyable.

Well it's just 8 episodes or so, so I'll take your word for it. There's apparently a ton of additional seasons after the OVA, are they quality-wise better or worse?

That's not Victory

Oshii for me, his approach resonates with me the most, a 3rd of my top 9 anime are by him and he is one of the few great directors who may have stumbled once or twice but never face planted. Even Dezaki has stuff like Sword for Truth to his credit.

eigageijutsu.blogspot.com/2016/02/interview-with-mamoru-oshii-on-angels.html?m=1

According to this interview some of his ideas for that Lupin movie made it into Angel's Egg.

Where's the rest of it?!

Victory gets a lot more hate than it deserves, but by all means, it's not even near the top.

Crash is a rushed mediocre sorta-conclusion to the original. I'd recommend giving a pass.
2040 is its own thing and is very 90s. I didn't like it but you can try it if you want and see for yourself

This would actually be fairly manageable to get through if you were dedicated enough, it was all subbed and you like kids tv anime.

It's missing a few titles like
>キリンあしたのカレンダー
>Xボンバー

Thanks user. Might check 2040 out.

>born in 1980
Damn son, you're as old as me.

I you like schlocky cyberpunk police anime full of one off plots oriented around cyborg sexuality the AD Police OVA is pretty fun. Makes for a cool back story for Leon even if the tone is way darker than what makes sense for a BGC spin off.

Attached: adpolice.jpg (655x1000, 67K)

I enjoyed Crash, though it was somewhat of a departure from the original series, so watch it while treating it like an alt-universe or DYRL style remake. Couldn't stomach 2040. I bought the DVD for AD Police since it was like $5 second hand but haven't got around to watching too many episodes of it.

I recently finished Ideon (now I'm trying Dunbine). We all agree that Ideon is amazing, right?

I particularly loved this bloodthirsty little cutie.

Attached: Ideon kasha.jpg (480x360, 28K)

Watched Angel's Egg twice since my imported BD arrived on Wednesday. Finally finished LoGH Gaiden. The ones without any shading were pretty good but I think that despite not being in it for the animation LoGH does work better with proper shading and detail on the characters. The one with Reinhard and Kircheis in a tank was exceptionally good. Also watched LoGH Golden Wings which was underwhelming and kind of pointless.

I truly miss this old cyberbunk atmosphere in modern anime

Attached: 03.jpg (1888x1016, 136K)

Golden Wings introduces into canon the idea that FPA starships carry onboard neither plain hot water nor bags of tea.

Yang was a revolutionary leader because he was the first person to bring his own tea from home.

Attached: Golden Wings.jpg (1280x960, 141K)

I miss this style of noses

Ideon is peak Tomino.

what's wrong with her face? there's a cancerous hole where her nose should be

i wish akira had a full anime series. 1 movie isn't enough vs 120 manga chapters.

i am sure Hollywood will make a shitty live action

That's some monkey's paw shit, on one hand people deserve the full thing without having to go pick up the manga to fully understand it and get the true ending but on the other you just know a modern TV series version of it would look like shit

Anyone here ever watch wrath of the ninja? Saw it years ago when I was a kid, and just recently was able to figure out the name. Really good shit, i dig the soundtrack and the animation is well ahead of it's time.

Attached: hqdefault.jpg (480x360, 17K)

as an adaptation I thought it was really clever; it's a GREAT adaptation of the first half of Akira that finds a way to explore a lot of the themes of the full manga within that limited framework.
I read the manga after the movie and I liked it, but I didn't feel like I was gypped by the film or anything

That's the tricky thing with noses, either you draw them realistically, which can be jarring with more cartoony characters, or you are stuck hoping the audience will be able to abstract out an nose from what you draw. I know I have a hard time with the single dots for noses in a lot of modern anime, they just look like they have a little mole instead of a nose to me. I think in this case the hard line on the side and having the front of the nose totally shaded looks just a bit off. This is probably a better way to do that kind of nose with the heavy black shadow covering a bunch of it,

Attached: noriko.gif (540x409, 1.94M)

I always look for an excuse to post this.

Attached: nose.png (794x1200, 161K)

Hey this also applies to Turn A Gundam.
Because it's nigh unwatchable garbage. Every episode for the first 40 or so episodes is just: Loran is a fucking retard that gets saved by someone else and the rebels gets attacked with no consequences whatsoever, rinse and repeat. The music is good but by about episode 20 every time I saw fights get resolved without a scratch to either side I wanted to jump out a fucking window. The story is also fucking retarded and the villains are shit.

Need some Freud titties in here.

Attached: freud.gif (500x340, 1020K)

fucking Haruhiko this dude put his dick in like everything pre 90s with his same face shit ( still good artist with nice use of colors) his imdb must be huge.

In the middle of GTO, how is this shit so good.
Probably going to try and watch Onii Sama e again once I'm done

Mikimoto and Kitazume were absolutely everywhere.

I still need to watch Cleopatra. 1001 nights was so fucking crazy.

Project harder, walking garbage.

Who Puru here?

Attached: Ple.jpg (721x999, 178K)

0080 is not from the 90s, chum.

>with no consequences whatsoever
But people die all the time in the series? A large part of the cast is dead at the end.
>The story is also fucking retarded and the villains are shit
The best part about the story is that there are barely villains, but the conflict spirals out of control anyway.

Only brainlets dislike Turn A.

Glaring oversight on my part.

How's 3000 leagues in search of mother? I've seen almost every anime directed by Takahata but haven't seen this one

I remember the cute loli.

Not for lewd. Unless you want to make a Marida.

If you mean for the dub, they didn't. He speaks the same English as everyone else in the main cast.

>unless you want to make a marida
That's the plan.

I wonder if Miyazaki ever heard of Charles Dellschau.

That wasn't Mikimoto who designed that character, it was Ohnuki. Seemed to be going for that kind of style though. I think Mikimoto had a pretty good progression over his career and has some distinct characters, he definitely updated his style a bit every few years. The SDF and Gunbuster characters usually look quite distinct in style from one another, the linework got looser and the faces were a belt more squishy looking, and he went much harder on the hatching. His style had changed up considerably by Macross II as well. His non anime illustrations are really nice too.

No, he's right, 0080 is overrated

Still the best in the franchise.

Dude, it doesn't matter if cowboy bebop is spoiled for you, if there was any anime about the journey more than the destination it's cowboy bebop. The ending really ain't shit, it's just a bit of reflection on the rest of the show. Cowboy Bebop is an experience.
Eva is still definitely worth it too.

If you deduct about two dozen other entries, sure.

My nigger. I've been saying this as well.
While I like some of the styles that got popular after 2000, a lot of it was just backpedaling from the industrial-strength anime style that had come about in the 90s, because normalfags and casuals couldn't handle it.
And even then, I guess moe and romcoms wouldn't work with that style, and those genres were the direction the industry took in the early 2000s.
90s anime wasn't ashamed to be anime and was wild and fucking insane, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.
I love this shit to this day (visually at least), Dragon Half, Akihabara Dennou Gumi, Saber Marionette J, it's painful on some level, but that's what makes it so fucking good.
I remember I hated Saber Marionette J as kid though, I cringed every time I saw it.

Yes, better than every other entry.

The transition to from ink and paint into computers was rough. I think part of the reason Azumanga daioh was even made was because school girls doing next to nothing was the easiest thing to move to and from those dinosaur windows 98 mainframes.

2040 > BC

No. Just no.

Ugly, cheap digital anime was more of 2000s thing.

>There wasn't really a bad arc but it felt like it dragged in places like the boxing touring arc
I think that part is filler iirc, there was a little glimpse in the manga but it ended after 1 chapter.

Finishing Fighter G Gundam. Gotta be honest, i am rather disappointed, I expected a silly show full of nonesensical battles and I got it, but it's also just not it. I just can't put my fingers on it, I guess my problem is that it's too tame, it's not in this category of so bad it's good and just leaves of with bland impression. It gets an occasional chuckle from Gundam or character designs, but that's just not enough to get through 20 minutes episode, let alone 49 of those.

I'd forgive it if animation was good, but it's just as bland as lack of cheese in writing and gets progressively worse. What's the point of it being a gundam show if after literally every attack they switch to showing dudes in spandex instead lf mechs. There is too much footage of people in cockpit. Show isn't without good points, but I actually wish it was dumber, as silly as it is it doesn't actually feel like they are going all out with it. Maybe occasional character death to spice things up (it's a Gundam show after all) would have made it better, but as is it's just too goddamn safe and sterile.

2040 looks good though

Except that car episode, that was horrible

So much detail in that background, and they're done such a good job of making it feel organic and kinda cobbled together.

I mean I don't agree with him but If I was gonna Devil's Advocate I'd mention that 2040 is an actually complete product.

I'll never understand the hate 2040 gets. Same with DP Flash for similar reasons. Both are good, if not the same thing as their originals.

I like to think that is under the new Olympic stadium in Japan. Neo Tokyo is about to fucking E.X.P.L.O.D.E

Objectively, 80s > 90s

Didn't Master Asia die? I could've sworn Schwarz died too, but I honestly can't remember. He was my favourite even

Only hipster faggots post anime and don’t actually say what it is. What, you expect everyone to just know what it is? You expect yourself to look cool that you found this hidden anime and won’t share it with anyone else? You’re the exact opposite of what the author expects in a fan. I don’t even want to care about this shit, KYS

Yes, Master Asia is defeated by Domon and dies, repenting as he's free from Devil Gundams control

Schwarz dies protecting Domon after it's revealed he's Domons brother

>i am sure Hollywood will make a shitty live action
they've been trying since the 90's, funny enough, same with GiTS. And we finally got that awful GiTS

RK didn't age well, the OVA's are better of course, but poor pacing and heavily censored violence and conflicts that get resolved without too many stakes abound.

Also Kenshins master steals the show

Which show are yoy talking about? The one in the OP that other people mention what it is?

Just finished Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, but I'd rather be in such a place myself than watch a cute android girl sip coffee and listen to the sea for twenty minutes. There's a bit of an understated horror in the slow destruction she's doomed to witness until the end, but not much otherwise. I guess I don't click with the pace set up by this type of slow, relaxing anime. I'll try reading the manga at some point.

I'm still watching Saint Tail and it's still good. But I worry a bit about the implications of some spoilers I've seen, hopefully it doesn't turn bad at the new OP, which will be the next episode. Seen 24 so far

These are all pre-2000 anime I am currently watching. Which one should I finish first?

Attached: taigamoeanimelist.jpg (802x106, 27K)

choose Lady Oscar

Hokuto no Ken, you only have 18 episodes left.

Fuck that shit OP pissed me off and now I no longer care anymore, ree

Watched Angel Links and it sure deserved its awful reputation. It looks like absolute garbage after a couple episodes (which is baffling since it's a Sunrise anime), but what kills it completely is the ending. I have seriously no idea about what they were thinking with this.
How can you ruin a concept like "Outlaw Star spinoff with big tiddy tomboy MC"?

is it Yuri?

Attached: e17528.jpg (540x600, 57K)

AnJ 1 up to episode 55 and then hop over to AnJ 2 and go from there. That's what I recommend to everybody who wants to get into the Joe anime -- past episode 55, the first series goes off the rails a bit and then peters out with an anime original ending that is pretty lame all things considered.

No.
There's a little bit of hetero romance and it's fucking awful.

The only things I'll salvage are the Outlaw Star references and the soundtrack by Toshihiko Sahashi (Big O, FMP,...) : youtube.com/watch?v=fohsbthuhjI

so its just ecchi fan service?

>You’re the exact opposite of what the author expects in a fan
But I don't watch series to fit into author's fan club?

>aired 1998
Barely with the timeframe, user. It's a good ova though. I wouldn't say the tones of existential horror are "understated" as basically everyone walks from the experience feeling it, and the manga goes even further to establish the tone. Unpopular opinion, I enjoyed the anime more.

There's a bunch of shower scenes, but not really. It's your typical lighthearted spaceship/scifi anime like we don't get anymore nowadays, until the insane main plot kicks in.

Casuals can't also handle being hit with a stick to genitals, but it doesn't automatically make it a worthwhile experience.

Is Anne Before Green Gables worth watching?

Yes, but it doesn't belong to this thread.

Thanks, I decided to ask here since we all like the original Anne series

The rest of Aim for the Ace

For me, it's Tomoyo

Imagine how much of an old hag she'd be today.

I have a feeling that's the case but it's been nearly a decade since I tried watching the TV show. I still really like Kenshin as a character regardless

Its also worth reading.
Its amazing.

I'm sick and I have a theory that if I watch a really bad anime then whatever bug I have will kill itself. What's the absolute worst show from the 90s with less than 100 episodes? The Kampfer of its era, if you will.

Pilot candidate I think is from that era. If not, watch it in dub anyway just to make sure your illness is dead.

Wasn't the post about the art-style, though ?
I haven't even seen 2040, I was only talking about the designs.

No thank you.

I like variety. If you don't like that particular style, it's OK, I think it works well with certain genres. But consider this:
After 2009 every anime has looked the same. K-On! codified the look of the modern moeblob,
and all subsequent shows made by Kyoani copied it.
Even fucking A1 copied it for a majority of their series and I'm sure many more did, this is what pandering to the lowest common denominator does.
90s anime couldn't have worked in any other medium, and that's what made them interesting.
Shit like Hibike could very well have been live-action shit, it would've been the same.
Niche styles falling out of vogue and anime as a whole casualizing / stagnating are directly related IMO.

>Dragon Ball GT
Super redeemed GT so hard it's not even funny
>Cowboy fucking Bebop
>AiKA
AiKA is a 9/10 masterpiece

Is this bait ?

>After 2009 every anime has looked the same
You should really stop posting.

Obviously not literally every single one.
If you can't see however how K-On!, Hyouka, Tamako, Hibike, Vividred, SAO and Gate all look the same, you're simply retarded beyond help.

Looks that way.

Yes KyoAni makes a lot of shows that have the same look, and A-1 makes a lot of shows that have the same look, but I could tell a KyoAni show from an A-1 show out of my peripheral vision.

They're far too similar for my liking. Sora no Woto was particularly bad, it was literally knock-off K-On! to cash in on the hype.
And look at the shows Kyoani made before K-On! - all had distinct art-styles. Modern Kyoani has grown complacent, they don't care to innovate anymore, they'll rehash the same designs a million times if need be. A1 isn't any better.

He said Bebob, not Bebop.

About to watch Jarinko Chie. Has anyone watched it?

everyone here gay though

Describing something as "a random thing to say" doesn't express that you disagree at all though.

I'm gonna mention NieA_7 because fuck it, 2000 is close enough.

I fucking LOVE this show so far. Probably gonna finish the final 3 episodes tonight. Mayuko is the waifu I have been waiting for all my life and Genzo is a character I can actually relate to as a gigantic quiet oddball. The show is quirky and you can tell the production was an absolute blast to work on for the people involved. I've genuinely laughed at the comedic moments and the gross new millennium digital animation really gives it some charm. I'm not so weary about trying these unknown shows with lackluster reviews anymore. It feels like this show was made for me, it just came a decade earlier than when i could appreciate it.

Nice meme. Maybe if you ignore that half of their, at the time, very small catalogue was all the same looking Keyshit.

Attached: uguu-`1.jpg (800x450, 45K)

I thought it was fucking hilarious. The series was so damn boring, and I was so tired of the characters being assholes all the time, that it was some great catharsis.

I'm also holding my breath for a BD release, since this year marks the 50th anniversary

Attached: Cn8-h6fUAAQtg6E.jpg (600x450, 27K)

>The series was so damn boring
Why would you not only watch it to the end but then also go onto the movies if you weren't enjoying it?

Someone mentioned a bad guy. I worry a bit that they'll introduce an enemy or something.

Anyway, just finished episode 30.

Was a bit worried a few episodes ago, when she started dating that rich guy. For the first minute of the episode or so it looked like she was falling for him, and I almost wanted to stop watching and feared that everything would develop in a direction that would make me want to drop the series.

Episode 29 and 30 were great, though. Much good interaction between them, and somewhat complex story too.

I don't really like the vocal music they've added in the past few episodes when she does her stuff though. I liked when "it's showtime" had the main focus, the vocals don't really fit and distract from the interesting part. Feels like they are ripping off Sailor Moon.
That's an extremely minor complaint though.

Don't want to go too much in detail about what I worry about because I'm a bit afraid of spoilers.

Yeah, no shit, Sherlock, the Keyshit looked the same. (Though I think AIR looks a bit different from Kanon / Clannad, probably because those came out later)
But there was also FMP, Haruhi, Lucky Star and K-On!, and all of those had their own distinct style. We're talking 2005 to 2009 here.
Everything they've done after 2010 (except Nichijou / Dragonmaidshit) hardly deviated from the K-On! template.

how does a show this gorgeous not get subbed?

People these days would probably think this looks bad.

Is Kanashimi no Belladonna any good?

what do i have to read to understand angel's egg

People say it is, but I haven't seen it.

Will rank what I've seen enough of:

>Good:
Uchuu Senkan Yamato
Ace wo Nerae
Macross
Cardcaptor Sakura
Initial D
Crest of the Stars
Kare Kano
Video Girl Ai
Rose of Versailles
Windaria (probably)

>Okay (often enjoyable, but not very memorable)
Cat Girl Nuku Nuku
Dragon Half
Riding Bean, probably. forgot all about it
Martian Successor Nadesico
Angel's Egg (memorable, but boring, so in the middle)
Gunbuster
Escaflowne
Utena (memorable but too deep to understand)
Magic User's Club

>Bad
Project A-ko
Bubblegum Crisis (however the last episode is good)
Record of Lodoss War (MAYBE okay, but anyway the TV version is good)
Iria Zeiram the Animation
Ah My Goddess
Slayers
Shamanic Princess (HOWEVER I can't forget about it, it's just SO boring, but it has memorable parts, but I'm unironically rewatching it as sleep aid when I can't sleep. Can never stop talking about it, so may be worth it for how memorable it is for both its memorable parts and how boring it is)

Working on:
Megazone 23 - first episode was okay, and supposedly the rest of it is worse
Orange Road - only seen a few episodes. The pre-release OVA was good, but the rest has bad reputation
Galactic Heroes - pretty good.
Aura Battler Dunbine - not seen enough. not super fun, but okay 4 episodes in

Also:
Good:
Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain
Okay:
Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star
Okay but possibly bad:
Akira, Ghost in the Shell

Really liked Video Girl AI as well, try DNA2
I wanna watch Ah My Goddess and Slayers just to see what I missed in the 90's

>I wanna watch Ah My Goddess and Slayers just to see what I missed in the 90's
Watch some Tenchi Muyo stuff too. It's garbage but they were some of the most known 90's anime back then.
The 90's in general were a bad time for anime.

But I've seen or hear about much good anime from the 90s

By the way Slayers is often considered to be good, that it's bad was just my opinion based on how entertaining I found it and how much it annoys me.

>Bad
>Project A-ko
>Iria Zeiram the Animation
>Ah My Goddess
>Slayers

>Okay but possibly bad:
>Akira, Ghost in the Shell

This nigger is completely retarded, don't listen to him.

yeah, tenchi muyo and love hina too
i have record of the lodoss war, those who hunt elves and vision of escaflowne on my backlog

It's an erotic fantasy film with a weak plot, but very interesting visuals and music. It's not porn, and it's really unique in when compared to other anime. I enjoyed it, but it's not for everybody.

No, that's not me. I'm though. And the guy you quoted.

Yeah, jumped the gun on that one. Still, your list is terrible.
It just seems like you didn't get it / aren't the target audience for some of those, in the end your list comes off as completely random.

>Good:
>Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain
That's it ? Just "good" ?

>Okay but possibly bad:
>Akira, Ghost in the Shell
This takes the cake.

>Okay (often enjoyable, but not very memorable)
>Gunbuster
You know Gunbuster is a beloved classic, right ?

All of the series you listed are recommended viewing anyway, even though a lot of them are flawed, so giving a rating / opinion at all seems pointless IMO.

Slayers is a mess. I don't know if there's a translation of the LNs, I'd suggest reading the manga.
Anime changed a lot of things, I think most people won't be able to appreciate it, if they didn't watch it back in the day.

>You know Gunbuster is a beloved classic, right ?
That doesn't mean it's good.

>You know Gunbuster is a beloved classic, right ?
OH NO, A CLASSIC. Stop the presses. It's great!

Are you new here by any chance ? If you say something that is universally considered really good and has been discussed to death a million times is bad, it'll make you look like a retard / someone with shit taste. The burden of proof to make a proper argument for your opinion is on you in this case.

>this entire post

>someone with shit taste
That's what an average Yea Forums browser is like so it's ok. Didn't expect those stupid shitters to be in pre-2000 threads though

So Harmony Gold death when.

Why do they still have the license.

Care to explain why did you think GitS is bad? I can understand Akira and Cowboy Bebop but GitS is just perfect in movie form.

>I can understand Akira and Cowboy Bebop but GitS is just perfect in movie form

Attached: 1540701066704.png (293x270, 50K)

He unironically didn't get it probably.

I mean, I find Cowboy Bebop one of the best anime ever made but each to their own. GitS is just perfect in any way you look: animation, storywise, direction
Same applies to Perfect Blue

> I can understand Akira and Cowboy Bebop
No, they are also good

Those tend to be a bit polarizing tho, for one reason or another. But saying GitS is bad is the same as saying "I'm a retard".

It's quite telling that you think so highly of a film that essentially answers its own question 20 minutes in and starts to drag really hard after that. Thinking that Akira is controversial because your club filled with pseuds don't like it, while saying that GitS is good, and thereby indirectly implying it's smart because you accuse people of NOT GETTING IT, certainly doesn't make the other party look like a retard. Personification of the the Dunning-Kurger effect right there.

It's cool to hate Oshii, user.

Not that user, but you seem to think GitS amounts only to philosophic undertones. Even if you actually believe the movie delivers its answers 20 minutes in, it's still visually amazing movie. It has probably the single greatest ending fight in any film. It sometimes boggles me how people ignore the areas the film does very well because they found some singular detail to their disliking.

>It's cool to hate Oshii, user.
What the fuck did I miss ?

>It's quite telling that you think so highly of a film that essentially answers its own question 20 minutes in and starts to drag really hard after that.
What question would that be ? The fact you think there's some one central question to it tells me you actually didn't get it.
>Thinking that Akira is controversial because your club filled with pseuds don't like it, while saying that GitS is good, and thereby indirectly implying it's smart because you accuse people of NOT GETTING IT, certainly doesn't make the other party look like a retard.
That's a lot of assumptions there, friend. I have also no idea what you're trying to say here.
AKIRA tends to be polarizing because many don't like the anime's non-standard story-structure or how it deviated from the manga.
>Personification of the the Dunning-Kurger effect right there.
You're one of those people throwing Dunning-"Kurger" around trying to sound smart, huh ? Sorry for exposing you this hard, brainlet-kun.
Go back to lurking, please.

As far as I am concerned GitS has the greatest audio directon in any animated feature film ever made, yet I still don't like it. Besides, using your argument it would also be borderline impossible to hate on Angel's Egg, End of Evangelions, Akira and plenty more, yet people do it all the time. Do you consider Steam Boy a masterpiece because it's visually stunning?

>What the fuck did I miss ?
Yea Forums becoming even worse than it already was

>Do you consider Steam Boy a masterpiece because it's visually stunning?
a lot of people regard Myazaki's movies a masterpiece because of their visually stunning artwork but I just find them boring and empty (princess mononoke being the only exception)
everyone is entitled to their own opinion on what's good or bad but I just find it interesting how can someone find GitS bad when it does everything good

everyone is entitled to their own opinion on what's good or bad but I just find it interesting how can someone find Totoro bad when it does everything good

>I just find them boring and empty
Fuck you man

> Besides, using your argument it would also be borderline impossible to hate on Angel's Egg
That's really radical take of my argument. In order for it to actually fit the same criteria, Angel's Egg would have to be near flawless with some user nitpicking about some minor detail. And while "people do it all the time", people also do a ton of simply retarded shit.
>Do you consider Steam Boy a masterpiece because it's visually stunning?
No, but I don't consider it garbage because it clearly has merits.

Again, no one is saying you have to like things, but it's retarded to pretend an opinion constructed from bias while ignoring a ton of merit is actually valuable.

He never even said nor implied that people are "not getting it" when they say it's bad.
Besides GITS is a great movie by pretty much all classical critic film standards.

It also doesn't answer shit in 20 mins. It shows the main theme but there is far more to it when you watch it to the end.
Also the idea that a movie would be bad because you can find out what the essence of the film is somewhere in the middle, is retarded.

Not that user.

>everyone is entitled to their own opinion on what's good or bad but I just find it interesting how can someone find Totoro bad when it does everything good
No, what's good or bad is objective, however people may or may not like something based on personal preference, and there's nothing wrong with that.
GitS has to be judged in the context of 80s and 90s Sci-Fi, if you don't like those, you won't like GitS, but that doesn't mean it's "bad".
That's just my opinion of course. I don't really like Cowboy Bebop, but it has merits and I respect it. It's a god series.

You say good and bad is objective, but then proceed to argue GitS has to be judged using the context of 90's scifi. Were you having brain problems when writing this?

*good, not god

fuck I hated it that song urghhhh

but the giantess movie episode thing....back to my containment board no

It's not completely objective. There are objective criteria but and you can make near-objective statements when comparing an element of 1 film to a similar element in another movie but there is no real "objective" ranking of movies.
Although I absolutely hate retards who spam the meme that everything is subjective when a 5 year old will recognise that Oshii is a better director than whoever directed random seasonal show x.

Something can still be terrible despite individual aspects having some form of merit. What ultimately matters is the product in its entirety. So someone saying the film is bad simply means that they weigh X more than Y and Z. Almost everyone takes this approach by the way. Most people almost entirely dismiss the acoustic portion of an animated feature because they don't care about. Are they less retarded than the plotfag? Who's in the wrong here? What's the approriate way of weighing individual aspects? Is character writing important? So many questions and so many ways to define "good" or "bad".

>He never even said nor implied that people are "not getting it" when they say it's bad.
>But saying GitS is bad is the same as saying "I'm a retard"
I have no reason to give him the benefit of the doubt on that.

>what's good or bad is objective
No it isn't. Individual parts of something can be judged more or less objectively, the product as a whole can't be. What is supposed to be objectively good about GitS' premise or structure? It's not even original, but merely a(n vague) adaptation of a manga that addresses a question people had been arguing over for all eternity by the time the series came to be.

I agree it's a toxic thing to say and I definitely disagree as I think there are more than a few reasons to dislike GITS but I think he was just saying that GITS is such an obvious example of a "great movie" that it just seems super contrarian to hate on it

yes DYRL is pretty good

>So someone saying the film is bad simply means that they weigh X more than Y and Z.
I don't generally disagree with your statements, but let's be real for a moment here, this all does not mean absolutely fucking stupid XYZ do not inherently exist in verdicts. When we're not talking about movie that excels for example solely in your acoustics, but about a movie that's one of the most highly acclaimed animation films of all time, I think it's very sensible to actually question your criteria of judging products. Even if "good" and "bad" are constructs and loosely definable, it again does not mean opinions cannot be compared and find certain statements very lacking.

yes digital still can't put this level of detail in

yes I think Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is way way ahead of most other things.

Knows what to leave out and integrates you into a long lived narrator then dissociates you from a dying human race.

You have the science plane thing
the human
the wide creature thing

I like to believe there's something like "truth" in this world.
But this is ultimately a debate on metaphysics. It's not really about "what does 'good' mean / what does 'bad' mean", but rather "how do we use those words in a way that is meaningful".
Say some retard doesn't like GitS because he didn't get it / or maybe it's a kid who is way too young, say age 10. Does this mean GitS is "bad" ? No, it means that guy / kid wasn't the target audience. That's what I meant by "objective".

Basically this. I didn't think my perspective on the usage of "good" / "bad" / "objective" would derail the thread this hard.

There is no real reason in my mind to question your criteria by which you judge art. We automatically give more attention to the things we value in a work. Personally I'm interested in everything direction and character depth/development.
I don't give a single fuck about music and it won't influence my opinion of a show at all unless it is truely awful or truely great (and even then I don't really know anything about music). Furthermore there are a ton of other criteria that other people use and value that I simply don't know much about or don't care about.

Trying to give a truely fair and complete judgement only really matters if you are an actual critic.

I absolutely agree with what you said near the end though. The only thing that really matters is whether or not your argument for a work of art is well thought-out, logical and not bullshit. A specific argument can absolutely be judged and weighed against other arguments, and they should. Which is why a good discussion of art focusses on specific elements with examples

>most highly acclaimed animation films of all time
Argumentum ab auctoritate really isn't the way to go here. If someone said that they disliked the characters, then there's not much one can really do. Are they in their right to weigh characters more than anything else? Sure they are, most people do which is why character centric novels are more popular with normal people than plot-centric ones.

Where do you go from here? Argue that the characters and their respective likability where not what the director focused on and should therefore be no more than a sidenote of their personal analysis? Intention only matters so much, otherwise you'd have to give credit to every single shit tier anime ever made because they were indended to made exactly the way they turned out to be. Now if someone says that GitS sounds or looks bad, then you can say that they are wrong.

>audio direction
Oh man that's my thing, direct me to other shit with good audio. The OST is the only reason I can keep coming back to Eureka Seven AO

Minky Momo
The rest of moomins

So what is it now. Do you appreciate good audio directing or good music? Because the two aren't the same. I don't even like the GitS OST, at least not on its own. I can't listen to and gain any enjoyment from it, but it works well for the film and Wakabayashi did an incredible job doing so much with so little. Compared to Spirited Away his staff was really damn small, making his performance even more impressive. Then again, it's harder and therefore more impressive to make a sci-fi sound right than some fairytale Ghibli movie.

>direct me to other shit with good audio
Osamu Tezuka's Legend of the Forest. Not because it has really good sound effects, good OST, or elaborate sound synchronization, but because it is somewhat unique in the sense that it is a non-dialogue film (short) that is accompanied by a score of Romanticism period classical music that acts as a backdrop and is used as program music, in a way, much like Disney's Fantasia and other shorts. Not that I'm necessarily recommending this because of the music, I just like it anyway, plus it's a more rare concept to see in Japanese animation, so I think it would be a more interesting choice.

>Argumentum ab auctoritate
If you think I'm gunning for a take that you can only trust author's verdict, you're gravely misinterpretating things I've said. In the context I'm referring to how (if you want anyone to take your opinion seriously that is) you should argue how your opinion is more sensible than those opposing it. In other words, if you want me to believe your opinion is coherent, you'll at some point have to explain what the general reception gets wrong. As a passing point, I didn't really expect you to construct your entire post around this notion which I think was very self-explanatory.
>If someone said that they disliked the characters, then there's not much one can really do.
You seem to be sort of a person who thinks embracing lack of objectivity means you cannot find opinions that are more well-constructed and argued than others. And again, let's remember the context here: we're not arguing how much weight you should put on some aspect you arbitrarily just decided, we're talking about if an verdict that by default ignores majority of the film content can be considered to have any value. Which I'm sure you already can grasp my take on.
>Now if someone says that GitS sounds or looks bad, then you can say that they are wrong.
But how can you say sound design isn't bad if they just weighted different XYZ while passing judgement hurr durr :^)

I'm going to sleep but if you want to continue I'll try to be in the next oldass anime thread, seeing how we're on bump limit

I'm a fan of both, but in particular the ambiance of atmospheric music, like you get in Lain with the sounds of traffic and power lines.

Thanks for fighting the good fight, user. Guess as an ESL I shouldn't have butted in, but that underage mentality of "GitS is bad and everything is subjective XD lol" really rustled my jimmies. We think alike, but you put it far better than me. Good night.

What the best Macross weapon and why is it Speaker Pod Gamma?

Attached: Speaker Pod Gamma.jpg (640x480, 35K)

>if you want me to believe your opinion is coherent
I think you're taking yourself as a tad too important. Why would the opposition care about convincing you? It's a futile thing to do, especially given how the entire construction of right and wrong is flawed from the get-go. Ultimately it simply boils down to what the individual critic expects, which is why reception of films is never all positive. The process of weighing always happens. Whether or not you find someone else arguments more convincing is nothing. This isn't the law where burden of proof has defined parameters.
>we're not arguing how much weight you should put on some aspect you arbitrarily just decided
Refer to the above. You simply delude yourself into believing that aspects aren't arbitrarily weighed by proxy, which they very much are. The opinion is merely an opinion, whether or not it's better constructed in your mind is irrelevant since your conclusion was very much influenced by your personal variables.
>verdict that by default ignores majority of the film content can be considered to have any value
You could make the same argument for the Star Wars prequels or Transformers. They also excel on a technical level and sport boatloads of social commentary, hence must have some form of merit, right? Yet "critics" still call them shit, dismissing what is good about because what happens to be bad about them happens to no outweigh the good parts. Attack of the Clones both sounds and looks insane. You're taking an overly simplified approach that you should be aware is neither the norm, nor very sensical.
>sound design isn't bad if they just weighted different XYZ
No clue what you're trying to say. Similar to animation, sound can be judged more of less objectively based on tempo, volume control, accuracy of sfx, sound stage and various other parameters. Some guy saying that he doesn't give a shit about sound (weighing it 0) doesn't mean they think it's bad. They simply don't care.

How do you not get the point about sounds? There exists a ton of works that have very unconventional sound design which obviously have to be judged based on the context. Hence sound design isn't analytical. Your post is silly. Watch Boogiepop.

this series was complete shit

Unconventional isn't the same as incoherent. The same way unconventional animation a la Ohira isn't bad because it's unrealistic. So I wonder what it is you don't seem to get here.

What the fuck, people are arguing that anime isn't subjective? Art doesn't have any goal. Anime is just a vehicle to express an idea or lack of. People are confused that anime is meant to be a competition signifying a specific thing, and treat it like a game with numbers.

Attached: 1518658547020.jpg (640x480, 55K)

I'm actually still up so take a last quick reply.
>Why would the opposition care about convincing you?
Because that's like the basis of argumentation? You tell me your opinion and I argue against it. If no one cares, we could be shouting at clouds. Or was this supposed to be more philosophical take on the futility of life?
>The opinion is merely an opinion, whether or not it's better constructed in your mind is irrelevant since your conclusion was very much influenced by your personal variables.
Again, your opinion on the film hinges on singular detail, which makes it a horrible opinion. It's much less a question about whether any opinion can be more than an opinion, but rather about how you formulate an opinion that's weaker than the competition. I can't stress this enough so I'll stress it again, opinions can be compared and stupid opinions do exist. Relativism does not mean nothing matters.
>Star Wars prequels or Transformers
It's the same argument you tried to make about Steamboy & co and I've we've already covered that. The movies obviously have merit, but the verdict is up to the context. Likewise, a critic that ignores merits of a film in order to bash it is a bad critic, and you shouldn't hold this as the golden standard of analysis.
>Similar to animation, sound can be judged more of less objectively based on tempo, volume control, accuracy of sfx
Basically this , most movie aspects have "parameters" but their usage depends on the context. Same as animation, objective framerate doesn't necessarily equal objectively great visual style (whatever that even in practice means). Unconventional doesn't necessarily mean incoherent, but it totally can, and incoherent can also work if the flick has a certain aspects it tries to achieve by the design. You ask what the user doesn't get, but yourself have double standards on judging different aspects of the work and are completely unaware of this.

Are you a newfag ? Or a femanon perhaps ? I like how you ignore this part of his post:
>You seem to be sort of a person who thinks embracing lack of objectivity means you cannot find opinions that are more well-constructed and argued than others.

It's something that has been said many times already by other anons, too.

>Besides GITS is a great movie by pretty much all classical critic film standards.
Meaning if one were to say GitS is """bad""", perhaps you should clarify by what standards you're judging the movie. If it's just your own arbitrary bias, then that opinion is worthless to anyone but yourself.

>Although I absolutely hate retards who spam the meme that everything is subjective when a 5 year old will recognise that Oshii is a better director than whoever directed random seasonal show x.

>Even if "good" and "bad" are constructs and loosely definable, it again does not mean opinions cannot be compared and find certain statements very lacking.

You just refuse to accept there are certain agreed upon standards and hide behind the flimsy excuse "everything is subjective anyway".

Are you one of those postmodern deconstruction types ? If so I was wasting my time arguing with you.

Follow the chain, this started with someone claiming one of the most acclaimed works in the medium is "bad".
Rather than explaining his position it turned into a meta-discussion about relativism vs. objectivism.

>Martian Successor Nadesico
I've heard a lot of people really love this show. They say it's one of the only actual deconstructions in anime and not like the usual shit people call deconstructions like Madoka or NGE that really aren't

Don't trust the user you quoted, that whole list is completely arbitrary.
That being said, the series is flawed. It has a shitty budget and a weird premise.
There's a lot of people who can't into older shows, if you're one of those you won't enjoy it.
The movie was pretty good though, enjoyed it for the Sakuga.

And I wouldn't say it's more or less of a deconstruction than Madoka or NGE.

It also has some historic value to it, so there's that.

>It also has some historic value to it, so there's that.
In what way exactly?

Used to be popular back in the day, one of Xebec's better known shows from that era, referenced here and there.
But it is nowhere near, say, Eva, both in terms of popularity and how much influence it had on the industry.
I'd imagine most /m/fags saw it. I guess this is what it boils down to, how /m/ you are.
If you like /m/core you can give it a try.
