Africa as the continent itself doesn't really sucks though, outside maybe of having many dangerous predators, it has plenty of natural resources, fertile soil and good climate. It's a bad place because of all the wars and infighting caused by their unfortunate circumstances: african civilizations tend to develop more slowly because of their relatively unchanging and unchallenging environment, this made them an easy target since the last couple centuries for more advanced countries. Colonialism raped them so hard and gave rise to all kinds of problems like infightings between ethnicities and tribes that they struggle to piece themselves back together. Also world powers (US and China first and foremost) don't want Africa to get its shit back together, they need them weak and dependant on "aid" that doesn't actually drive them to become more independent and culturally mature in order to drain them of their precious natural resources. It's a really fucked up and complex situation.

Not at all. Egypt had a large and active middle class of well educated people and a working class with more rights and respect than you'd think. There are even records of the outcomes of labor disputes in which free workers were given additional pay and vacation time. Slaves existed but were chiefly employed for menial tasks by the wealthy.

Partly to justify colonialism, partly because they've never managed to create the kind of large lasting empires that european and asian powers had, which is mostly because Africa is a disease and predator ridden hell hole.
