What's so good about Hunter x Hunter? I am on Greed Island and the pacing has taken what feels like a nose dive. I hear the next arc is amazing so i am trying to get though it, but this is a drag. And before this it felt like typical Shonen.
Pretty good, but nothing that Naruto or Dragon Ball hasn't done. I'd actually say the Akasuki is better than the spiders. Don't feel like they are that much of a threat when 2 of them are already dead in the same arc they are introduced.

Like the logic behind how the villains rationalize being both ruthless and caring for their selective circle is what makes them distinct and interesting to watch. And seeing how that rationale changes as they develop. Compare the Zoldyck's putting family above all else and ultimately only killing as a profession, versus the Spiders' impoverished background and them killing and stealing from a world that had literally discarded them like so much garbage, versus the ants who are running on conflicting biological urges that simultaneously prioritize the will of the individual and the well-being/survival of the species.

Well, I would say most works of literature that contain obvious derivations on preexisting works, and my brain only has the ready example of how One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest felt to me like a straight ripoff from Moby Dick, most everything like that, "the original is better than the copy." HxH feels like the opposite. Like he took dragonball z and the functioning mind of an adult male with his own offspring and family unit, and distilled the Rolls Royce Merlin engine from some shitty modern Chinese Cessna rip offs and a couple lawn mowers Mazda built in the 90s with Wankel engines.
I would call HxH the modern masterpiece of the "forensics" of shonen writing; with all its callbacks and shout outs to everything toriyama did in DB and DQ. It was like the only reason jump still pays him is to put on a soccer clinic for the younger mangakas to learn writing skills, from.

Hate to be the 2011 fag, but it was 2011 that got me into HxH. I am very glad though I read Chapter 1 before I started the anime, at the time (early 2014) I was in the habit of sampling the first chapters (offered for free by Viz) of series before I started watching, I've always been more of an anime guy than a manga one though. Since then I've reread the series & been keeping up with the current arc. I know 2011 gets a lot of hate around here, but it did bring a lot more attention to a series that deserves it.
Chimera Ant Arc is definitely my favorite arc. While I had loved pretty much the whole thing from the start (I know some don't like Hunter Exam, but even back then it was a lot of good shounen fun, with great characters & a slightly ominous world building - Netero was great) and my impressions strengthened with each arc, (Heavens Arena - Yorknew - Greed Island - marathoned each of those arcs in chunks over school breaks, like I watched Hunter Exam & Zoldyck Family over Feb break, Heavens Arena & Yorknew April break back to back, then marathoned Greed Island as soon as school got out, and then watched CA over the course of two weeks, just in time to catch up with the anime as it began the Election Arc) the CA Arc elevated the series to my absolute favorite (at the time) and easily my favorite battle shounen.
I could write a lot about Chimera Ant, but it is without question still my favorite battle shounen arc of all time.

I was 15 when I first came in touch with Hunter x Hunter, there, I experienced the most beautiful piece of work I've ever seen. To the average viewer, it may be just another battle shounen. But this masterpiece struck such a strong chord with me, I felt like it was made for me. It was as if the writers had tesseract like access to my own thoughts and memories. I wept from pure joy at a number of points in the manga. The awe, the wonder, the absolute captivation of my soul was at play.
HxH for me was my "Nessun Dorma" opera. The art, the story, and perhaps my favorite, the characters were perfect. Not by oneself, but together in harmony. The Chimera Ant Arc came full circle for me like a loop. I lost my fucking mind - but this time, for in a good way. I teared up many times in the scene where Gon and Gin are on the tree, from just pure joy. But at this point, it started to feel like something else. It felt spiritual. Like an awakening. Like if I had a relationship with God and He/She talked back. At the end of it, I felt like a new person. I highly doubt I'll ever experience anime or manga the way I did with HxH. Nor am I quite sure it'll ever be quite necessary.

Hunter x Hunter came out in one of the most stressful and scariest periods of my life. During that period, I was also staying in the tenth floor of an apartment with a safety lock. One day too many later I just broke and went to town to buy a screwdriver, intending to end it.
I watched Hunter x Hunter, not like some bucket list or final wish. While you're waiting for the moment of opportunity, you're just trying to fill it with familiar things.
As I watched the first episode, I remembered feeling a floodgates of emotion, and I made a journal to record what I had felt.
The days did not get any easier, but Hunter x Hunter kept me going. In a week of pure torture, there was that one day Hunter x Hunter would come out, and I looked forward massively to it.
Life is still hard. Sometimes it gets a bit unbearable. But Hunter x Hunter reinvigorated my passion for life, and some of my old dreams. Every now and then I look back to the journal, as proof that yes, it all happened, Hunter x Hunter did do something so incredible. It wasn't just a figment of my demented rose-tinted mind, my feelings at that moment in time were genuine, and it has lasted until now.
There may be better shows out there, more action-packed ones, and friends I have showed it to do not share my strong sentiments, but to me, Hunter x Hunter came out at the right place in the right time. In the worst case, I would have owed my life to it. Even if not, it has definitely changed my outlook in life.
It's for that reason that it holds a special place in my heart, and with that journal to forever remind me, I will continue to sing its praises.

There's been a bunch, but the straight up adding elementalish qualities to aura group has been scarce. Even some non transmuters use transmutation beyond just shaping their aura (pokkle being the most inarguable one), but it isn't always clear cut.
Physical things are conjuration. Transmutation works with aura. It doesn't matter that there was something already there that's being converted, matter that didn't exist before is conjuration always. In this case, it's a limitation of sorts. It'd be interesting to find out that it requires a combination of the two categories though, since he's been vague on the benefits of less obvious nen category blends.

Silva sent Killua to Heaven's Arena and specifically told him to stop right before the floors that start bringing nen into things. They were keeping it from him. He's supposed to be the next head of the family, so they were trying to get him trained and matured the old fashioned way, before going into using nen as a crutch or making an awful ability and stunting his potential. Probably also to make him easier to control. He was rebellious enough that even knowing about it probably would have pushed him towards it or distracted him at least.
