It's on the title. They live in the Bermuda Triangle (or its equivalent if it's Earth) so ships commonly get lost there. Gladys must regularly make bonfires as makeshift lighthouses to keep the ships away.
One day a girl from a ship washed up in the island and they became (girl)friends, and she apparently has regularly been visitng Gladys since. But mermaids live much longer than humans so maybe she's dead already.
