I genuinely don't know what "period piece" means, do you mean whether or not the show has a big focus on historical accuracy?
The shows selling point is its brutal action and atmosphere. Its really fucking tense, but it also feels suprisingly realistic, everything has impact and not a single sword-swing is wasted.
