Partially. Part of it is that their overuse of sterilizing agents for cleaning has meant the remainders of viruses and diseases are super strong, and that also means they have less interaction with weaker viruses and thus don't build up immunity. These two things contribute to the "Japanese cold."
But separate from that is the absolutely suicidal work ethic they force upon everyone that is the only way to hope to get ahead in your job. And when your only obligation for work is meeting your editor weekly and having 19 pages done every week at a set time, your sleep schedule will also turn to shit as you try to keep shit done.
It's fucking depressing, but they are working themselves to death and their coping mechanisms are usually smoking, along with shitty fast/easy food means their nutrition is startlingly low.

They don't die, they essentially just go on disability. Some of them just get injuries that specifically make it hard for them to draw anymore and some get depressed. The difference in culture is clearly that Japanese people see nothing wrong with leaving a popular series unfinished for decades if the original author can't do it whereas anywhere else they would bring in replacement artists to do to the work.
