Nah, it has more to do with how a undead filled, ruined city that has been being scavenged by adventurers for 1000 years can still be producing enough value that more people want to go in.
I've settled on the idea that the city has not only animal, but also plant undead, the leaves and roots of which can be ground into a slurry which when concentrated is an alchemical catalyst for making magic items. The plants keep growing despite being undead, and the city is still dangerous because everything that dies there is resurrected every midnight.

Plants are a solid recurring resource, though you could make it more exotic and complicated - the dew drops forming in the necrotic energies of the city, fragments of moonlight frozen at midnight when the reanimation hits, a vapor leaking from the empty graves of the city, and so forth.

Adding an exotic collection method makes it more potentially interesting, and purely magical value makes it harder for people like me to complain about how it's wrong.

The lack of buildup isn't great, but I remember others where there seems to be even less buildup, maybe because it jumped quickly to sex that didn't even last as long as this, and no bathing first. I would prefer vanilla like this more often, with proper buildup that doesn't wait until the end of the series either.
