You'd be surprised how much damage an animal can sustain before dying, and while there are some artistic liberties being taken, the scene is believable enough to be interpreted as shown.

Yes, the anime Director wanted to (in his own words) make a Salaryman comedy. He just tossed in some chapters from the manga. The anime isn't bad as a stand alone, but the manga is the better product.
I wonder how the director got that idea for the anime.
