They're a good idea and there are some nice ones.

Yeah, it is pretty dumb when the genderbent character has every dude at her school chasing after her. This shouldn't happen even if the character transformed into a sex bomb. At least this isn't the case in every genderbending manga; e.g. in Remix Heart the protagonist has a circle of good friends but doesn't attract attention outside that.

This is probably the closest we have to a "realistic" gender bending manga. Just by virtue of it being very subtle transition, not to mention the girl herself is slowly growing into her body. She isn't a girly girl with ginormous boobs, but she grew immensely as a woman, both physically (boobs getting bigger every so subtly) and mentally (slowly doing more and more things femininely to the point where she is actually more girly than most of the female cast).

Not to mention, she had to made effort to make friends, which is a nice change of pace where women and men would be a slobbering mess to be in the mere presence of the MC in most of these stories.

No she isn't, her existence is to cockblock the main relationship, and her general thirst for the MC is unbearable.
