There's not really anything that pointed it to be something else. People just got their hopes up because of the animation. Tho I wouldn't call it AOTD I still think it ended up being pretty great and one of the best animes of the year (totally the opposite of what the buthurts of Yea Forums say, just because they thought good animation is actually proportional to the quality of the series and they expected a masterpiece).

So why are episode 7 and 10 some of the best anime episodes we've gotten in recent years? Only other one that comes to mind would be Sora Yori.

It was melodramatic in the context that the characters were underdeveloped and mostly two-dimensional, and the drama was intrinsically tragic in the first place, trying very hard to appeal to emotions to make up for the fact that we barely know these people and we have no reason to care about them in a more natural and gradual way, which I guess that comes with it being an episodic show.

Violet Evergarden is so honest with its characters, emotions and audiovisual storytelling that your average anime fan, the kind of person that grew up watching melodramatic characters in mundane situations, accuses it of being melodramatic.
The very thought processing behind the making of this show differs greatly from the norm that rules anime storytelling, as exposed by the director and series director on interviews before and after production. It is one of the most sincere and beautifully crafted experiences one can have in anime.

Most characters are kind of hard to look at so we rarely ever see full of shots of them moving unless from a distance where details are obscured. If I told you to picture how Cattleya is walking you literally can't, you never saw her do so.

Violet is most animated when her Saber dress is obscured and she animators probably love her times during the war more than her Saber dress times because 8 year old war machine Violet is the most animated Violet is in the show.

First of all your definition of animation is total bollocks.
And second, loli Violet is seen moving around a lot because she was doing what soldiers do during battles, whereas Doll Violet mostly needed to talk to people and figure herself out. Her design didn't stop the animators from doing their job when she needed to move a lot to fight the rebels on the train and it didn't stop the animators from making her gorgeous metal limbs move. Not to mention some of the episodic characters with equally detailed designs had emotional outbursts that caused a lot more motion and that wasn't a problem either.

This is a heavy drama with very ambitious production values directed by one of the best animators of the studio so it makes perfect sense to focus on faces and finer motions.
KyoAni animators are paid well to do their job and they shouldn't be shown mercy, VEG's audiovisuals are what anime should strive to have.

Like all the fights in this show, that fight lasts only 10-30 seconds. The fights in Violet Evergarden aren't impressive in the least bit because they are over before they usually start, which begs the question, WHY DOES IT HAVE THEM? Too much chaos in the screen caused by the fast cuts in an otherwise simple action. Not to mention Violet looks like she teleports to that guy in pic related. It's not very well edited. There's also a heavy use of close ups that throw you out and fail to convey a proper sense of space, this is also why the teleporting Violetto is so jarring. I never said anything about the animation, as this retard implies, the animation on itself is fine, the direction and editing aren't.

Those were indeed some fast cuts but I had no orientation problems whatsoever.

The villain is shown from his left side then the left side of the train is shown, then back to the villain's left. Finally we have a front angle showing the villain trying to jump off the left side of the train with Violet just in front of him, he jumps while the left angle is held and then Violet catches him.
The invisible line separating both characters was never crossed and there was no shift in the environment during the action and reaction.

As for Violet apparently teleporting, I imagine this is one of those tense moments where everything seems to briefly pause only to have a character immediately act as if saying "nope". I've seen this countless times in cinema but I don't know the term used for it.

I really dislike this part of VEG, it's so hard to take it seriously when it has scenes like this you'd expect from some bullshit action show.

I get that the point is to show how Violet is no longer willing to kill, values life as her Uncle Ben used to say that with great power and etc. But they'll hammer in this exact same point for the next 2 episodes, so this scenes literally adds nothing except sad attempt at showing of action... In their drama show about emotions and letters.

There is a rather heavy disconnect.

This is one of the instances where the animation is also quite bad, not only the editing. There's a disgusting lack of weight in those punches and the frame interpolation gave my eyes cancer. You can be the cultiest VEGshitter but you cannot deny this was horrible.

I would add in that because her character is so basic and shallow the show also heavily relies on using generic tragedy stories as crutches. It's easy to make your audience feel sad when you can just throw in some characters for an episode, make them experience tragedy while dressed in pretty visual and sound design, and then never deal with them again. You don't have any real connection to the characters, you just recognize the situation as sad.
