I honestly have never understood this viewpoint. Airpower, especially modern airpower, absolutely crushes tanks. Like, an M1 has less than zero chance against an F-15E. You're just stuck sitting in this defenseless metal box while some douchewagon can drop weapons on you with complete impunity. I just don't understand why you would voluntarily drive a tank.

N1K, like the Ki-100, was slow. Barely 400mph. The only relevant one is the Ki-84, but even it was outmatched by contemporary US planes.
The Ki-84 would be at a slight advantage against the early corsairs and especially the F6F, but later designs like the P-47, P-51, and any corsair running more than 1942 engine settings would be much faster.
Elite company were regular air pirates, their whole schtick was overcompensating for that.

Quite. The Ki-84s advantages are in superb climb and turn rate; the speed is adequate enough to not hinder it, compared to something like a Zero, IIRC. It has acceleration over a P-47 but the P-47 is going to whip ass when it comes to sheer top speed. The much heavier airframe benefits it a bit by retaining more energy in maneuvers (lol inertia) and it's a very clean, low-drag ship, less draggy than a Ki-84 IIRC, so that goes a good way towards compensating for the Ki-84's great power/weight ratio.
They'll fight in different ways; energy versus stall/turn, but it'll definitely be a fight.

Seriously, though, the entire "yufang portal" thing is an increasingly interesting angle. Given the elapsed time, it's... well, it's the modern day here, so if they finally succeed in opening the portal to "Yufang" again, they're in for one hell of a shock.
I also like how they took the GATE idea of "we could alienate the world because we'd have all the resources we need right here" and flipped it on its head, because that world is sorely lacking in many resources. With the oceans gone there's tons of formerly ocean-bottom mining opportunities that'd be (literally) dirt-easy to exploit, but the lack of agriculture puts a damper on a lot of industrial processes that heavily utilize organically-sourced base materiel. That's a world that desperately needs us a lot more than we need them, and it'd be really interesting to see "our world" sending them help...
... and imagine how the information import would go. "You mean the engineering documents for a whole shitload of new piston-engined aircraft is just... available? What?" Combine that with a brisk business trading rare earths for new machine tools and the mercenary air pilot business would be booming.

Just finished episodes 5 and 6 yesterday, and it feels like they're really exploiting the ease of animation granted by the cg models. I still wouldn't compare it to what is afforded with digital animation, but at least the characters are getting quite emotive in time with their expressions. It's a little exaggerated, naturally, but to that end, it feels sort of like watching a theater play--quite whimsical or enchanting when emotion is in play. The first few episodes, I think, suffered to a degree because this sort of style hadn't be hammered out yet within this series. Magician Ace and Pancakes were particularly great in those two respective episodes. Even politics bitch had her moments of enjoyable expressions.
All that aside, these fucking dogfights are 14/10 with the sound design and use of first-person perspective.
