I've never bought manga before, but this particular manga series has interested me lately. The first arc is the first 3 volumes, so I'm looking out for those.
The only problem is manga is very expensive where I live and I prefer reading physical books than pdfs. The cheapest option for 3 paperbacks is over $78, and the deluxe hardback 3 volume edition that comes out in a week costs $95. These crazy high prices have put me off buying manga before.

HxH is better than Berserk in most ways. The characters have actual depth beyond just "hurr me badass, me kill monster" and it has deep and meaningful things to say of the themes the series covers, unlike Berserk which is "hurr me angry, me want revenge!".
Moreover unlike Berserk, HxH is able to seamlessly weave in and out of genres, going from martial arts tournaments to mob wars to MMORPGs to the epic rise and fall of an entire civilization to politics and a new era of exploration and colonialism. Anyone who is a fan of manga owes it to themselves to read this masterpiece. 100 years from now Berserk will be just another obscure edgefest like Gantz or Tokyo Ghoul which are generic battle shonen at their core, while HxH will still be discusses in universities as one of the most ambitious undertakings in human storytelling.
This speaks to how dense Togashi's writing is with ideas, and HxH is at the moment at least three times as thick with plot and intrigue as Berserk was at its height. To give you a tangible example of this, currently in Hunter x Hunter we have a small conflict about the succession struggle of a single kingdom that is being represented by THIS graph. This is the level of storytelling that Hunter x Hunter is operating on. Berserk wouldn't look out of place in any shounen magazine serializing at the moment, while the absolutely ingenious narrative of HxH keeps reaching further heights in thrill and storytelling.

This. In Berserk, only Golden Age and Kushan War are excellent arcs. Inquisition arc is just good, Fairy arc is meh, the Boat arc is boring as fuck, and the current arc is litterally the worst of the manga by far. Berserk is extremely overrated. Golden Age is a true masterpiece, though, but that's it, nothing more.
In comparaison, there are three absolute masterpieces in Hunter x Hunter : Chimera Ants arc, Dark Continent arc and Yorkshin arc. And the other arcs like Election arc, Hunter Exam arc and Greed Island arcs are pretty good, without being excellent.

Berserk is a great manga and you should read it. However the first three volumes constitute the weakest arc of the series IMO, where Guts is an overly angsty edgelord. "Ooooh, I'm so dark and brooding, I hate everyone", that sort of stuff. However directly after that you've got the Golden Age Arc, a lengthy flash-back spanning 11 volumes telling you the whole life of Guts from his birth to where you saw him in chapter 1. That arc is one of the best of all the manga, and it justifies somewhat the assholish demeanor of Guts in the first arc.
My suggestion would be to read the first chapter of the golden arc online, as it's the last chapter of the third volume, and buy your way from there. The only thing you'd miss is the knowledge that Guts hates a certain character from his past, but that makes you trade impending doom for surprise reveal, depending on who you ask it's a bargain.

Until Pain arc? Naruto had a huge drop in quality the moment Itachi first appeared. It was clear from this moment that Kishi didn't know where the fuck he was going and rushed a lot of things for the plot to advance. Sasuke's sudden change of character was for the worse, and the Scanning arc was very weak. It became completely inconsistent in a lot of ways afterward.
