We're they ever solvent? Anime production companies are paid peanuts, usually not enough to cover initial production costs, so they have to make up the difference with contract work and whatever they get from royalties on merchandise and shit.

Monogatari to Shaft is pretty much about Aniplex sucking them dry. Zoku Owari is pretty damn good though, considering I was already a bit tired of the franchise.
Sangatsu was handled to them by Umino herself from what I heard, she even asked Shinbo to direct it (which didn't happen). Sangatsu in my opinion is the best Shaft show, at least from this decade, but I don't think they would ever get to do an adaptation of this caliber under regular conditions.
Also just look at how many anime they did in the last 2-3 years and compare to say, 10 years ago. I know quantity isn't a main factor (KyoAni usually has a small output), but for a studio that used to shit on the bed with 2-3 adaptations in the same season, their current state looks bad.

My point is, besides their already established franchises, they got almost nothing going on for them currently.
