Manga is a hard sell even to anime fans cause people just have this big grudge with reading. I always reccomend manga, from fullmetal or Trigun to deathnote or berserk, I'm always trying to get friends into the superior medium but I've hot such a low success rate (or maybe just tons of stubborn friends) that I'd rather someone watch the show than not see the story at all.

To op, yeah definitely read it, but even if you watch the show theres a big war that concludes the first main series before the time skip, and its immensely satisfying the way all the years of world building come together for that war. Watching after the time skip to me is a harder sell, the war is worth watching to.

What the fuck do I get if I do convince you?

I've seen people debate on what anime is better to watch in the case of a series having multiple adaptations, but very rarely have I seen someone recommend to simply read the manga. I assume it's because an anime is more of a spectacle and less of an effort, you get color, sound and motion versus text and b/w line in most cases, and you can have extra fun watching an anime with multiple people while reading a manga is almost always a solo pastime.

I tried got around episode 70 or something and the main characters spent 5 episodes saving a whale, fuck one piece.

But I'll convince you to watch all the canon episodes by telling you it's a shounen that actually world builds, sets up intrigue down the line while leaving breadcrumbs to theroize but not enough to outright spoil, has a cast that doesn't just lose to make the MC look good and has the writing to support it, has fantastical settings and abilities that suit the theme of an adventure, and more importantly It asks if skeletons poop

How do you get into? I just feel like I'm looking at cool pictures and not really seeing the story unfold.

There's a big drop in quality the second it hits widescreen (Davy Back Fight arc). Any point from then to the start of Thriller Bark is what breaks most people since the ratio starts to approach 1 chapter per 1 episode.

That's fair. I think I just like reading a lot anyway, so that's why I'm so into manga. Anime meanwhile has voice acting and better fights, so while I read more manga than I watch anime, I dont try and shove it down peoples throats cause I can see people aren't always into reading.

Most of us here who still follow one piece are only up to date because we started it back when we were kids and so we want to see how it ends.
If I were to be introduced to one piece now I wouldn't bother with it

OP has a very simplistic art style compared to other famous manga, but what oda does is make every page interesting with little details that either add to world building or character or just some laughs. And theres also a huge emphasis on movement, every page feels like the story or characters are on the move, when other manga would just have characters stand and talk OP still has stuff going on all the time.

As for the hxh manga it goes into better detail than the show of how the battle strategies work or how the mind games are going on behind different battle plans, but it's also a double edged sword cause the writer is really good at that but often goes overboard filling whole pages with text for a single exchange when it could be edited down. But then, if it was cut down what a lot of the fans love would be lessened, so again, a bit of a double edged sword.

You really shouldn't, it's a low budget soulless adaptation and the manga is far superior in terms of both pacing and quality
