Itachi is a bad person written by someone who understands that not all bad people are hair-trigger violent lunatics. Honestly, this is making me hope his arc will be further improved on from the already solid original.

Maybe in this adaptation Itachi is written to be exactly like this: a man who sides with the strongest in order to survive but not actually an evil person who kills for fun and seeks power. He's using his brain as he himself suggested Dororo.
However, in the manga he's a much more exploitative person, he acts like a fucking asshole when he meets Dororo again.

I foresee Itachi ramping up the assholeness on purpose just to piss off Dororo and make the reunion simpler to cope with.

He was a traitor, but he also had a point. What exactly was Dororo's fathers plan after all this? Would they spend the rest of their lives hunting samurai? Does one really think that that would have led to a happy end?

The idea that the father still trusted the asshole after showing his ass clearly weeks ago, makes the father a bit retarded, dunno if the manga made the thing more bearable or not.

I'm kind of hoping not, because this is so far on a pretty solid improvement over the admittedly flawed original in pretty much all respects so far, except maybe losing the charm of the Legendary artwork from one of the original greats, which they kind of tease with the OP just to show it could have worked. Story wise though, this is a much more streamlined tale that doesn't lose anything and only benefits so far from the massive changes made, such as Mio not being a flashback.

There isn't a right answer.
Hibukuro's ideals were just stronger than Itachi's. Many people supported him and were ready to die with the hope something could change, but it's not that he expected to exterminate all of them anytime soon. Not everyone is willing to give up and wait until a shitty samurai burns your house down, much less join them.

He implied he was only going to keep it up until the Samurai didn't abuse their power anymore, if they killed enough the Lords would have reigned them in just so that they didn't have to worry about losing too many before one of the frequent clashes that happen in this world. This is a place where it's so common that a battle will break out that children dream of seeing a rice field after all and even the oldest among them only has vague memories of it.

He had what is probably an unattainable goal, but a noble and driven one. He probably would've just gotten killed by something else eventually, but Itachi was still the one who gave up and sent him to an early and ignoble meaningless death for a bit more comfort in his life. The father was well had good intentions in a likely hopeless change, Itachi had a more reasonable but much worse idea to just give up and let it continue as it has been. Nothing got better since then, as the other episodes have shown. Maybe they wouldn't have anyway, or maybe they would have, we'll never know because someone gave up.

One thing I love about Dororo is that it weaves this stuff right into the narrative without spelling it out. You don't need Dororo lamenting that people are still being abused despite how long its been going on, you just see Spider-Waifu stumble into a mine and put it together on your own.

I really REALLY liked that scene. It's a nice display of self-sacrificial, motherly love without being over the top and grandiose. It's great precisely because of how small it is.

Itachi is a fucking asshole in the manga, here is an improvement, probably because his arc is quite long in the manga so they needed him to be 3 dimensional when the anime gets to that point.

Dunno, I liked how he died like an idiot in the original. It feels like they're trying to make him more sympathetic in this but the fact his stubbornness was his downfall in the original was a nice character flaw.

I think because his soul sight is so important, his actual eyesight is gonna be something he'll get back towards the end. Honestly I think they're gonna do what the manga did and give him back his eyes separate. It would be less jarring initially, it could possibly allow him to still use his soul sight (though probably lessened) and when he gets the second eye it could be a disadvantage and possibly blind him at a crucial moment.

It's very likely that if Hibukurou had to choose between Itachi's life and his vengeance, he'd pick vengeance. From Itachi's perspective, he made the best rational choice. Following Hibukuro was a dead end, and sure enough the cycle of vengeance came back and wound up killing Hibukuro.

I can't hate Itachi for trying to actually survive.

The obvious point was that Hibukuro ended up taking on a lot of the worst traits of the samurai he hated so much. He sowed violence and destruction wherever he went, left enemies in his wake, literally no different than the samurai who brutalized the farmers in his band. He was blatantly inflicting the same horror on them that they had done to him and his followers. It was about sating his thirst for vengeance, he didn't seem to have a plan beyond that.

Itachi was right to question "what next?" and Hibukuro's answer shows that there was no point in following him if you valued your life.

The point wasn't even that killing them was bad, but violence for its own sake is stupid and just begets more violence. Itachi had the right idea: use the violence in a calculated way to earn a measure of respect for yourself, then profit off that reputation to get an easy life where you don't have to kill people all the time and constantly make enemies. With a lord backing you, you also don't have to worry about people coming after you to even the score.

lt wouldn't have worked in this setting because the concept isn't even there for him. and he spent a lot of time there training in the manga. She would have had to be around for most the show. He didn't grow up socially able to be at that point in this series.

Peasants got made into samurai all the time. In fact that's exactly what happened, Itachi even said as much to Dororo he got friendly with the local lord. Hell, the de facto dictator of Japan at the end of the sengoku jidai, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, was a peasant before Oda Nobunaga elevated him to samurai status, and he wound up conquering the country and ruling it until he died. The only thing his peasant birth held against him was that he couldn't technically be shogun, since he wasn't from one of the ancient bloodlines that have the right to the title. Sure, the ancient lineage samurai sneered at him behind his back, but always behind his back, never to his face, because he'd cut their heads off otherwise. And they knew it.

You must not know much about samurai and the era. They were basically crooked cops bullying innocent weak civilians. But, maybe this is a flaw of the anime to not convey that well enough for a foreigner to understand.

The anime has portrayed samurai as the absolute worst scum of the Earth so far, I'm not sure what exactly it should do to make that more clear.

Itachi's a pretty affable guy. He was chummy with Hibukuro and Dororo liked him, I think he could win over a lord with a few conversations. And really, his suggestion wasn't wrong at all. Fighting forever is not feasible, it would only end with all of them dead. Put what he suggested in context with what happened: they just had a bloody fight where they lost a lot of guys. Itachi's not stupid, he knows that the next fight might not go as well for them, it could be him dead on the ground. So he suggested a pragmatic solution: cash out now using your fearsome reputation to get a cushy spot with a local lord. It's a good plan, one that benefits everybody in the band.

And how does Hibukuro respond? He flies into a rage, strikes out at his friend, and threatens to kill him for even suggesting an alternative to continuously engaging in dangerous fights that risk everybody's lives. At that point 2 things become clear: Hibukuro has no idea what's doing, long term, and he would gladly see Itachi and everybody else dead in order to sate his vengeance.

Following Hibukuro made no sense after that.

The only really cold blooded thing Itachi did was sell out Hibukuro in order to follow his own advice. He probably didn't need to do that, most of the guys probably would've followed him regardless, but I think he wanted to get back at him for hitting him and threatening him.

It seems like taking a stand for your own people's survival and values, maybe a borderline revolution against tyranny. Itachi wanted to bend the knee for a life of comfort given to him by someone else for his servitude. Dororo's dad just wanted to eliminate warmongers and bullies so that regular people who wanted to live in peace would be free to do so.

As an extension of this, if the mercenary band they were running were really that much of a threat that the lords were willing to placate them, why not try to get him to give you some land to start a village on instead? Even say 'sure, we'll send you part of our crops' or whatever. Feels like Dororo's dad would have been less averse to just going back to living in a village rather than directly becoming a samurai.

Itachi also could have been a bit more tactful in how he went about broaching this subject to the leader, just saying "Haha yeah I don't care about all the hardship we collectively went through anymore lets go work as Samurais now."

The anime is fine in conveying their cruelty. I think that user has just been memed.

Events play out pretty differently between the original manga and this anime adaptation, but Dororo was always a girl in the manga. He just never mentions it and actually tries to hide it.

What happens in the manga?

But unlike Hibukuro, he was smart. He realized that, however noble the undertaking, it couldn't last forever. They just had a rough fight and he saw several people in their group die. They could very easily get wiped out if they ever faced a strong force of samurai. So he merely suggested they use the leverage of their reputation to get a good position with a lord. And Hibukuro wouldn't even hear of it. Moreover, he struck Itachi and threatened to kill him for even talking about it.

Clearly Hibukuro cared more about vengeance than anything, including the lives of his followers. It makes no rational sense for Itachi (or any of Hibukuro's followers) to continue following him. He doesn't care how many die as long as he gets to kill samurai.

With less than 50 guys, a lot of whom died in a skirmish with a small patrol? They got cut to pieces in a single ambush. They were small time bandits, at worst a nuisance to a local lord for attacking his vassals.

His nobility is the spirit of his actions, not what he actually accomplished. What he accomplished was virtually nothing but spreading more violence.

Instead of thinking about how to make his people happy he thought only of hating and killing samurai. That was ultimately more important to him than anything, until he had his strength taken from him and he belatedly realized what Itachi meant. In that scene where he turned away from the samurai burning the village, he was willing to cast aside his ideals to protect himself and his family, but his own past wouldn't let him slink into the shadows, he got called out by one of his victims and was killed for it.

That is the path his actions set him on.

Punished "Venom" Hibukuro

Then why even join Hibukuro? There were no shortage of bandits out there killing for profit. Yet he was with the one guy taking the fight to the samurai. He could've bailed at any time, but instead he became a good friend to Hibukuro. He didn't just betray Hibukuro out of nowhere at the first opportunity, he literally suggested to him that they cash out together while they still could. He said it plainly: "I think they've learned their lesson now".

But Hibukuro wasn't satisfied with that, for him no amount of samurai blood would ever be enough, and he had no plan to ever retire from it.

He might've have accomplised something if he wasn't betrayed by the samurai's bootlicker. Actually, even in death he'll manage to make things better through his daughter whom he teached well. Never let the samurai win.

Manga Dororo was really stubborn about denying it, in comparison is quite obvious this new Dororo seems to be quite aware of her situation and was obviously really embarrassed about what happen

He only betrayed Hibukuro because he A) refused Itachi's idea B) attacked him just for giving an opinion and C) threatened to kill him for even talking about it. He made it abundantly clear with that he had no plans beyond killing more samurai and that if push came to shove, he'd leave Itachi to die in a ditch in order to keep on killing samurai.

What's a guy to do when faced with that? Itachi could've just left, I suppose, or could've talked the rest of the band into joining him, leave Hibukuro alone to stew in his hate, but he decided to get back at Hibukuro for attacking and threatening him. He didn't even kill Hibukuro, just hurt him, even though the lord could have easily had him executed for his banditry he was spared that.

Itachi's not a "good guy", but he's not evil either. He's clearly vindictive, but also mostly a pragmatist. He probably had no ill will toward Hibukuro until the guy flipped out on him for what he saw as no reason.

Hibukuro was the strongest. He expected a lot of money, but Hibukuro hid all the money away to give to the small folk later. He got salty and rated the gang out.

There was no possible scenario where anything good happened for Hibukuro.

Because Hibukuro was strong as fuck and killing samurai at the time was still a lucrative business, it ain't that complicated.

We've seen multiple villages where there's no violence or devastation. People live under the thumb of samurai, but they're not being massacred everywhere. There's relative stability and peace wherever there's not active fighting.

Hibukuro should have tried to recruit more and more people and built a village/fort of his own by keeping samurai at bay. As the chief of the place, if he could keep the thing running and attract more and more peasants and all in one spot, he would have gained power and influence, with which he could have exert some pressure over the other lords.

tbf the gore/blood factor in fights is played up a bit because it's supposed to be an anime that's entertaining people in the end. But the scenes that come from past historical scenarios (like the crucified rebels or the feral legless soldier) hit heavier in terms of showing the desperate situations people are living through in the setting.

Daigo might not have the most pure motivations, but you gotta wonder if it's so bad to let demons eat a few dozen souls once in a while if it would relieve the burden of thousands.
