Character Can't Control Their Power

What are some good examples of this trope?
Has it EVER been done well?

Fooly Cooly.

OP's power to make threads where they don't belong

Tetsuo from Akira.

I just realized that out of the Big Three, Luffy is the only one who doesn't have a rage mode form while Naruto and Bleach had then, with the Kyuubi and the Hollow Ichigo

>What is Gear Four

Trigun

That kind of dynamic doesn't work with Luffy, because it would require showing the reader what he's thinking.

Also.

Gear Fourth isnt a rage mode retard

/thread.

A remnant of my Chuuni days, but I loved the Remastering Tetsusaiga arc from Inuyasha.

>no friend or foe
>curses everyone around + user itself
>stat reduction curse
>MC and sidekicks spend volumes searching for a cure
>all the while fighting off enemies with reduced stats

Especially Tetsuo.
The drugs being a activating, AND limiter was a genius method of storytelling and subverting the plot.
The entire final arc where his powers isn't stable is genius, where he is only his own worst enemy.

man the scene where Pain impales Hinata on a stake and Naruto just loses it gets me everytime

She honestly saved the series from being forgettable.

OP said good

Pardon me, It's excellent.

Gear Four isn't rage at all if anything Nightmare Luffy would be but even then it would be kind of a stretch

Do i need to say anything more?

At least post good broly

You must be underage if you think shieldbro uses any trope in a skillfull way.

Actually yes, [Forbidden Technique] is actually forbidden and has devastating long-term consequences when MC uses it.
That's one.

Hollow Ichigo wasn't a rage form. That was just a different personality.

They don't search "volumes" for a cure. Either they find it fairly quickly or the only cure is time. Conveniently the remaining time of the curse tends to "coincide" with the time until the next Wave or Spirit Beast quite often.

>find it fairly quickly
[access denied]
>time until the next Wave
Pretty sure they had to fight off at least one wave with shitty cursed stats.

"can't control power" broly was better in the first movie.

It's essentially a rage mode.
Rage mode doesn't just mean getting angry and therefore stronger, it's about losing control of your body to some stronger power, usually framed as a detrimental state to be in.

It's cool because it's not even Shinji's rage mode, and that's what makes it frightening.
Usually rage modes completely fail at making themselves seem frightening or in any way like a bad thing for the audience.

>overdone edgy transformation that uses anger as a power source
>completely negates the original problem that the a shield hero has no offense
>gets an asspull upgrade whenever in a crucial fight
>only drawback is he becomes an even bigger edgelord
Remember, just because you think it's cool doesn't mean it's well written.

>that the a shield hero has no offense
He doesn't, it makes shield counter-attack with flames
>gets an asspull upgrade whenever in a crucial fight
It wasn't first time it activated, speedwatcher-kun and is triggered by severe negative emotions.
>only drawback
Stat penalties and MC being useless as a shield while in that mode = cannot protect anyone around because it just burns anyone close.

Remember, just because you're underage and want a cookie for your pragmatism - you shouldn't try too hard.

He was completely in control, that's how powerful he is.

>[access denied]
I was refering to the holy water for Raphtalia. They got that in quite a short amount of time.
>Pretty sure they had to fight off at least one wave with shitty cursed stats.
Which one? I read up until vol. 11 or 12 (don't remember exactly at which one I stopped) but there were no waves or spirit beasts to deal with ever since they returned from the fight against the Book Hero. And I am refering to the LN here, not the WN.

No, I think that he couldn't control his libido. Guts was just a complete semen demon that Donovan couldn't resist.

They way he ripped apart the armored twins was worth it.

Attached: nagi.jpg (500x728, 154K)

Didn't read the LN.

More of a Yea Forums thing.

funny enough, Naruto did it well back in the day. When he can't control the fox power.

Superman did it well too back when he couldn't control his heat vision thing and had to fly to the ocean and let it out there.

>He doesn't, it makes shield counter-attack with flames
A counterattack is still an attack, user.
>Stat penalties and MC being useless as a shield
So basically the same as before he got the ability
>triggered by severe negative emotions
What? Please go back wherever you came from. Honestly, I don't know what I expected from someone who tries to defend isekaishit, much less shieldbro.

>A counterattack is still an attack, user.
That you can't launch on your own.
>So basically the same as before he got the ability
So no. It's not an ability but powerful usable skill.
It doesn't grant you stats permanently but it curses you with stat reduction.
>What? Please go back wherever you came from.
What? All 4 Heroes wield weapons who have [Curse Series], Naofumi was just first to unlock it due to his unfortunate circumstances.

He did have a way of controlling his powers, but since he dies from them I'd say he couldn't. Technically correct is best kind of correct, is this correct?

>sentient magical weapon goes haywire when owner loses all san points
What a fucking surprise user.

Attached: 1547127724981.jpg (1689x950, 160K)

Attached: 19.jpg (728x1143, 184K)

In the first movie he could talk while in his buffest form in the new one he couldn't

Deku

finally a real man shows up

Yeah, it's not a surprise at all, which is why the trope being used in this situation is shit. Just because there's a temporary drawback doesn't make it well-written. There were absolutely zero real consequences, because at the heart of isekai is wish fulfillment. Even if consequences are not required, it's still boring from overuse in the genre.

Which isekai hurt you user?

I still read isekai whenever I feel like turning off my mind. But shieldbro has to be one of the worst of them that became popular.

Well there's about 2 of them completed that matter and shieldbro just happens to be one of them.

Sakura-chan.
