Everything that's been posted in these threads about sea slugs' reproduction, and even the females being refered to as 'he' led me to think it must be some really freaky shit but Aculeatus looking so different from his aneue could point toward some actual sexual differentiation

They aren't really referred to as "he" besides the king title. That "he" was a liberal translation choice, original had no clear pronouns used for them as far as we know. PAS went with "she" by the way.

So I decided to take a look at the last year or so of the manga and put together "the Karen saga", as in everything that relates to Chinagrowth's interaction with other characters (mostly Phos), the romance with Aechmea and so on. It amounts to roughly 80~ pages over 10 chapters from 67 to 76, amassing around 210 pages. So everything Karen, when you collect it, makes up for roughly 40% of the last 11 month of content. I'd say that proves that our dear Cairo has been basically a deuteragonist of the story for the moon arc because it occupies a lot, but it didn't take the story over completely like some people seem to believe. It's basically told like an arc starting from the Ghost breakdown to the wedding chapter, with the night raid and its consequences right at the middle, so the effect that this all has on Phos is still at the centre of it all.

Thanks for the perspective, user. Hopefully the SEA ARC will be less of a dark time than this moon arc, with more to discuss than just giving Cucklebones new names and comparing moonshoes (night raid/earth chapter was good though).

I'm thinking of storytiming it in one go one of these days so more anons can see this.
Rereading it all a couple of things emerge clearly:
>the night raid's massive narrative importance for the characters involved does not really correlate to how it's actually a bit out of focus as a proper happening
>Ichikawa's pacing had to make it so vol 9 would end on the night raid's failure but she seemed to recognize herself that it needed some more time to breathe (so she added a couple of extra pages in the collected edition)
>same pacing has vol 10 have the Karen arc reach its climax right in the middle of it but also start seeding future stuff, which hadn't happened in a while
Volume 9 also had the title page be a white powder container spilled over so it's not like we could pretend that Cairo wasn't going to be front and center starting from chapter 67.

The Aechmea flashback slugs were pretty much all female. Who knows. Maybe they have serious shortage of men just like with food.
