I recall C64 floppy disks being able to get multiple games on it in some cases so it isn't that unusual if it's simple. Never really had any VN on the C64 or Amiga though to compare, aside from things like It Came from the Desert if that counts.

This reminded me of Game Center CX episode where Arino played Tokimeki Memorial. He chose to go for the girl on the cover despite virgin AD telling him not to because it's too hard for a beginner, dumped all his points into looks and got the successful ending on the first try.

It's not an issue of meta, it's an issue of references specifically. There are ways to be meta without going "hey, remember this specific show from a couple years ago." It's just that when your humor is predicated on the audience having a bunch of knowledge very specific to a certain time, it stops being very amusing to people who weren't there at the time or have forgotten it. It's the same fundamental reason why appreciating a lot of ancient literature requires reading two more books about the history and culture surrounding and inspiring it, the only difference being that nobody gives a shit about the landscape of seasonal anime a decade down the line.

There's even another (even more unpopular) show with a similar idea this season.

A lot of C64 games were made to be loaded entirely into memory, meaning they had to be 64kB or less. Your standard 1541 floppy could store 170 kB. The small games were often distributed on tape.
The big American titles on the other hand came on multiple floppies that required loading and disk swapping in between.
For galge the CG are the main resource hog. The more different images you wanted, the more disks were required.
PC88 disks also had 160kB per side. Four disks weren't uncommon. Some games even had disks just for the opening animation.
16 bit systems like X68000 or PC98 used higher density floppies with 1MB per disk so they needed less for PC88 ports. Later games still required over a dozen floppies though.
