Would you still watch or read Ranma 1/2 in this day and age? Would you recommend it to others? Who was your favorite character, and why? Did Akane & Nabiki's henchwomen from the anime ever get official names?
Ranma 1/2
I re-read the manga every year, and Ryoga is still my favorite character and the only one with any noticeable character progression throughout the series. I don't recommend it to anyone younger than 30, though, because children are too dumb to grasp that the root of Ranma 1/2 is Takahashi mocking '80s Japanese mentality rooted in 18th century traditions like the idea of arranging marriages between families. Millennials see everything through a social media/justice lens and wouldn't get it, thinking it either championed trans rights or was at its core anti-chauvanism and anti-misogyny, which it absolutely was not
Ranma 1/2 is the definitive '90s manga, with all the mentality of the '90s.
Gods, I am so SICK of the fucking trannies who keep flocking to Ranma as their champion - Ranma HATES turning into a girl! He wants to be normal! It's one of his major character points!
Ranma ½ is still funny as shit.
if shampoo would have won I think the series would be 10x better imo
Tell me about it. If Ranma had showed up at Nyucheizu in male form, he basically would have been married to her from the start. Imagine the potential if Shampoo arrives in Nerima, not as a bloodthirsty bitch after Ranma-chan's head, but as the first girl Ranma had a crush on looking for her boyfriend. Akane would have had a legitimate competition for Ranma's hand!
...Of course, then she couldn't have gotten away with being a self-righteous abusive little bitch to Ranma, and can't have THAT for a Takahashi Designated Love Interest, can we?
I still watch some episodes here and there mostly episode 30 (that fight was awesome).
my favorite characters was Kuno. i liked Kuno because he was a man respected by the whole school, good at pretty much everything, could have had any girl in school but was still chasing after Akane and the Pigtailed girl, spammed poetry like a shitlord, and his dynamic with Nabiki. He was never serious when he fought, He could have beat Ranma anytime with a little training.
i wouldn't recommend it to others.it's the kind of anime you can only get into if you grew up with it or like old anime for other aspects.
oh btw Ranma threads never do well in Yea Forums.
you're being too rude to Akane. easy there
>He was never serious when he fought, He could have beat Ranma anytime with a little training.
Gotta call bullshit on this. Look at the Watermelon Island story and the "Enter Kuno, the Night Prowling Knight" episode; yes, Kuno can get good enough to become a legitimate threat to Ranma, but he's too much of an arrogant buffoon to really push himself.
Also; respected by the whole school? The others at Furinkan High hated his guts. As soon as Ranma beat him for the first time, they turned around and stopped listening to him, denouncing him as "Furinkan's greatest pervert". And then there was Principle Kuno's return in the manga, where the whole school was ready to shave Kuno bald for the map to the coconut with the "get out of haircuts" token in it.
Trannies do that?
Yeah. There were "Ranma decides he's really a girl!" fics even back in the 90s, but they have literally exploded in the 2000s, as have the related "Ranma hooks up with Ryoga" fics.
Literally any series is made better by having characters like Kuno and Ryoga.
You do know that genderswapping is a super old and super popular story plot, right? And that what people like in their porn isn't the same thing as the person wanting to become a little girl themselves?
That's what i'm saying, he is too busy chasing Akane and Pigtailed girl to actually train to fight Ranma. It isn't like he was weak or anything.
>hated his guts
I didn't say they liked him, i said they respected him. but at the end he is still a fellow student so why won't they wanna get out of haircuts.
Rumiko really did try every opportunity ruin him later on in the series.
and he could have had any other girl in school. he was handsome.rich, smart at school, leader of the Kendo club.
When the authors call themselves names like "ExceedinglyTrans"? Yeah, there's something SJW going on.
Honestly, I'd like to see people pairing up Ryoga-chan with Ranma-kun more. We have a Nyanniichuan in canon, Ryoga is supposed to go everywhere in fanon, so why not have him wind up back in Jusenkyo only to wind up in the Spring of Drowned Girl - and then get lost again?
Heck, if you believe the springs mix, there's way for that to turn out sexy. Case in point.
Or, if you prefer a more "domesticated" version...
I'd argue they didn't even respect him. They feared him. There's a difference.
And no, he couldn't have any other girl in the school; they all thought he was a pompous idiot. Only the girls who didn't know what he was like, like the St. Hebereke students, liked him.
Ryouga is the reason you read/watch this. This was my first anime in 1999. Fantastic dub for its time.
Akane is worst girl, only other possible answer is shampoo. Ryoga is great, Ukiyo is great, Nabiki is great and shishihoudan is the best arc. I can't imagine most people would be into this today. The anime had terrible production values and is full of filler crap. Manga is an absolute classic though
How similar is Ranma to Urusei Yatsura's Ryuunosuke?
I'm no tranny, but ranma is a pervert who would do anything to win, even turn into a girl. And did you see how upset he got when tsubasa told him he was ugly in girl form.
agree to disagree, but can we atleast agree that he was really funny?
No one likes to be called ugly, your argument is useless
Yeah, he is pretty funny. Honestly, kind of a wasted character; he seems set up to be a serious rival to Ranma, in martial arts if not in romance, and then... Takahashi basically benched him for Ryoga.
Ryouga is a gift from God
The OVAs still hold up really well, but that's partially due to the fact I could never really get over the change from Sarah Strange to Richard Ian Cox. He's a fine VA, but I always get too used to the first VA I hear.
That's the whole point though.
The fact that Ranma looks like a gender he doesn't identify with is the whole point.
Imagine how awesome it would have been if Ryoga had also fallen into the Spring of Drowned Girl, and Ranma had actually fallen for her, leaving Ryoga conflicted about if he loves Ranma or hates him.
But the ones who keep upholding him as their champion are Male-2-Female trans. You know, which Ranma is NOT?
Well, there's a lot of similarities, honestly. Ukyo is more directly based off of Ryuunosuke in terms of visual and character identity, but personality-wise Ranma is definitely based off of her.
Inspired by the random thread on big-breasted anime girls currently on Yea Forums, what's your headcanon for the bust sizes of the Ranma 1/2 girls? The anime and manga never really make clear who's the biggest, and the OAVs - or, at least, the movies and the Cursed Doll one - all make all the girls really busty.
Ranma, Ryoga, Shampoo are my favorites.
Genma also ranks highly for me.
Ranma, Shampoo and Ukyo are my favorite primary characters. Nabiki and Kasumi are my favorite secondary characters.
For the rivals, I'd rank them Ryoga - Mousse - Kuno - Happosai.
Nah, I found Ryoga annoying and whiny, if not as much as Mousse. I watched and read Ranma 1/2 for Ranma himself, oddly enough.
