How the hell do the Rebuilds promote Asuka? Rebuilds 1 and 2 are all Shinji/Rei, Rebuild 3 is all Shinji/Kaworu. Shikinami is an imitation Soryu, without any of the character exploration. She's just a cliche tsundere who wants to cook for her baka. It's crap.
I'm a Misatofag, but I've always preferred Shinji/Asuka because it was the most interesting relationship in the series, mainly for its failings. The whole point is that Rei and Asuka are complex people with their own thoughts and desires - both are individuals just as much as they are puppets controlled by SEELE and NERV.
Rei was an artificial creation - she isn't a human nor is she an Angel. She's both, but she's neither. She's SEELE'S pawn and the opposing player. She was made by SEELE as part of their plan and was instrumental to their goals - everything revolved around her.

Her existence is living proof that SEELE can control a person's entire life if they wanted to. Ever notice that the EVA units all share that in common with their pilots and by extension the souls that pilot them? Rei is a hand made puppet, her Unit is the most agressive and targets Gendo and the others. She is alien and isn't meant to be cooped up in a tin can. Lilith can't be tied down, and Rei won't let it happen.
Shinji is both useless and useful. Incredibly dangerous and as weak as a kitten. Unit 01 can do horrible, horrible things, but can be taken down like everyone else. Yui is no different. The three are worth watching, but aren't. They represent the bare minimum of control SEELE had.
And Asuka was their finished model. The superior EVA unit. Not once into the show or movie does Unit-02 ever go sicko mode. Isn't it suspicious out of the three, her mother's soul was split? That Asuka by chance saw her body?

She goes on, but the point is, this is the exact same person. Dying robs her of the physical impression of crying, but the spiritual impression remains.

Regarding the Mari thing, I think it's possible that's just shit writing. Look at how Asuka reacts to Shinji at the start of 3.0. You'd swear they were great friends, but they just lived together briefly and fought one angel. Asuka taking it so personally, and (based on the phone call with Mari afterwards) still being hung up on Shinji after 14 years makes no sense at all. It could make sense for Soryu but not Shikinami. Mari talks about Shinji like she knows him, but their only interactions were her accidentally sitting on his face and later yelling at him to get in the robot. Kaworu never meets Asuka or Mari, Mari never really meets Rei, Mari barely interacts with Shinji, but in marketing they're all friends who like to hang out together. It's like 3.0 hoped you'd fall for the marketing and forget what actually happened in the other movies.
It reminds me of the new Star Wars movies where they talk in marketing all the time about "the new trio" despite Rey and Poe only meeting at the end of TLJ. Some writers seem to think they can just tell you that everyone's friends and expect you'll believe it.

I always took it that Unit-00 had part of Rei I's soul and that Rei II wasn't fully complete without that part. We already now from Unit-02 that an Eva can have just part of a soul. That part is violent towards Gendo and tries to resist him, while Rei II is obedient.
Then both Rei II and Unit-00 are destroyed leaving both parts of the soul without a vessel and they combine again in Rei III. This is also, I assumed, why Rei III can manifest an AT field in episode 24. Having the part of her soul that hated Gendo and wanted to disobey him back is what allowed Rei III to turn against him in EoE.
That's just my interpretation though. Maybe I'm a brainlet and everything I'm saying is contradicted somewhere else.

There it is. Rei's there for Oedipal purposes. Happy now? Of course not. For examples of it being mentioned in the narrative, referenced visually or how it's important to the themes, see below. These are all off the top of my head, so they're in no particular order

This doesn't invalidate Rei as a character. Just because she is cloned from Yui doesn't mean she IS Yui. Just because she has the soul of Lilith doesn't mean she IS Lilith. Her experiences make her her own person. That's a repeated theme of the show and Rei illustrates it beautifully. Yes, her hair and eyes are different, and she isn't a perfect clone of Yui, but she is a clone of her. She can manifest AT fields because she's also part-Angel, but her human genetic donor is Yui. I feel like you're getting bogged down in splitting hairs and semantics when you rely on these as cop outs from acknowledging the symbolism and purpose of her background.

that still is not confirmation that she would actually fall apart in other circumstances. for EoE it could have been just that she was lowering her AT field and that made her to start falling apart (she was as capable of rebuilding her arm once she put up her AT fieald again, hard co consider that a medical related matter). As for rebuild, it's rebuild it doesn't necessarily have any bearing over NGE, but I don't object too much to use it as an example either, but even that, that's just her thinking her life is like that of those fishes, it doesn't mean she's right. I don't know why I'm arguing the point since I also believe Rei would have to depend on heavy medical care. So I guess I'm just saying it's not necessarily a fact.

Ya, Aoba sure did look thrilled. I'm sure those were screams of happiness we were hearing across the world when the AT fields were dissolving. That said, I can't fully blame Rei for that, since it was Shinji that chose to do it and she tried to talk him out of it. Then again, putting the choice in his hands given his mental state was a pretty poor decision.
