Does it ever get good?

I'm literally only watching it because there's a guy at work who recommends it and I at least one to have something in common with the people I work with.

The first arc is passable, sort of.
Then they introduce powerlevels and shortly after the protagonist loses his emotions and turns into some edgy asshole. Also, the fights get more serious, but the MC gets HUGE power-ups in every single battle.

My problem with the action as of now is that there are no established rules for the action. Everybody can "teleports behind u" and the kid can catch a kinetic rod launched from several hundred kms away and hurl it back. Where does the his power come from and what does it all mean?

"Powerlevels" are cheesy and a really cheap way for the creators to define the scale of battle. But I would settle for anything to get a sense of what I'm watching.

Also stop watching and start the manga. It is way better.

I'm watching the anime because my workmate watches the anime. Will I miss anything if I read the manga? I want just want something to talk about with the people at work.

Four episodes into what? The first or second season? The first season gets really good towards the end but the second season was terrible.

I hate the mc's design so much

It's the most bog standard generic shonen you've ever seen. It doesn't get any better. I personally believe Elizabeth is one of the single worst written characters I've ever seen in any work of fiction.
