The anime in particular, try to make every series about "saving the universe". This means they need excuses for why people don't form huge armies of Digimon if it is so damn important that the good guys win. And at some point the story bottoms out because they couldn't tell casual stories anymore. Once the world is saved, the protagonists go home and leave the Digimon back in their realm.

While Pokemon in the end is about a bunch of people living regular lives. Pokemon is a part of their society, you can theoretically create an entire episode just portraying Officer Jenny's ordinary 9-5 day. There is just so much material when you aren't forced to kill a Leomon every season.

Digimon? The anime focus on special snowflakes who can do something no one else can. The world doesn't know them and they are all alone. This ends up being a self full-filling prophesy. There are less Digimon players because Digimon made itself to be some exclusive club, at least in the anime. While Anime Pokemon portray trainers as being numerous and cross all age boundaries, reflected in the real world.

Digimon had 3 different game trilogy called Digimon World for PS1 with three different types of core gameplay, from Action RPG to Turn Based RPG, to eventually party based RPG. Pokemon had the same turn based mechanics from day one and it was on the Gameboy till second generation sequel. Pokemon evolution is linear while Digimon evolution is suggestible but chosen by chance. Technically you don't get the same Digimon evolution as that anime series suggested.

It's kinda simple. While pokemon started as a real game in a world were anyone cold be a trainer, Digimon started as a tamagotchi franchise that was popular back in 90's. Also the anime didn't help with the whole idea of "chosen child", so the concept didn't gave the freedom for people to be "trainers" like in pokemon. They had to change it way latter after the tamagotchi died and they had to change for console games.

Pokemon did a very good job at establishing and honing its setting, keeping it close enough to real world to have its own natural depth without trying too hard to be unique. Being a pioneer in both games and multimedia franchises also made it that much more bigger.
And when it comes to being a kid in the days before internet was mainstream (not to mention smartphones), playing outside with bugs and watching animal/dinosaur documentaries on TV was so common that the basic lore of Pokemon had an extremely wide appeal to it.

If Pokemon debuted today with the original ideas and current technology, it would be still revolutionary thanks to the game system, but I doubt it would have long-lasting popularity. Ironically Digimon would be much more fashionable as a concept, but without a strong foundation from games it would fail to make a big impact.
Youkai Watch became big in moonland in modern times since they researched properly how to tap into mass popularity in the footsteps of Pokemon and Digimon, but the concept was too alien (lots of eleven mythology) and outdated (even today you can say "I can see/hear things/people" in Japan and get taken seriously, not to mention smaller things like blood type fortune-telling or good-luck charms) for rest of the world, though Pokemon rising from the grave with Go definitely didn't help either.

It really was a case of no good games back in the day. Pokemon grew because it had that huge 1st gen of games.

I don't think Digimon needs to compare to one of the most succesful videogame franchises to be great, this comparison was a big meme from the start.
Sure it would be great if Digimon was still going that strong with succesful games, bullshit hollywood movies and what not, but if you don't compare it to Pokemon it still is a good franchise with some great entrys and interestign universe.
It even gets content made (even though it's mostly shit) so it really coudl have been worse.

Pokémon was better at creating memorable mons and lore. As improbable as that sounds. The digital world is way more epic but it doesn't have strongly established forces of nature like the legendary birds or Mewtwo, who can show up on any damn trailer and make people scream. There are many copies of every pokemon, yet the anime and games knew how to make them feel important while we have like 30 greymon and garurumon variations so they feel disposable now. They should have stickied to the OG evolutions to build their reputation, at least that's how Gamefreak would have done it. Angemon is great though, he reaches legendary pokemon status for me since he was treated very well in Adventure and 02 punching way above his weight every time.

I might have gone off the rails, but do you anons see my point? At the end of the day the digimon don't feel that special. Even the Villains besides Apocalymon and the Dark Masters don't have much lore, they're just random strong digimon while the legendary pokemon are treated as integral to the world.

I'm a fan and it still makes me not want to play most digi games. I still love world since it was tolerable but 2 is unplayable and on 3 it doesn't feel rewarding to get your ultimate to level 99 only to unlock your first mega evolution and go back to level. Fuck that reverting mechanic this isn't SMT.

1st gen digimon beats any gen of Pokemon.
After the 1st gen, digimon got a bit silly, especially near the end of 1st gen with the metal/war/fusion evolutions (is that what they called them? I've totally forgotten because gen 2 was the last full digimon series I paid attention to and I was like 7 at the time) they started to introduce.
Ironically, Pokemon is now doing the same mistake in the recent games/series.

If digimon were to cash in now, it would make a new anime that starts the whole thing again with 1 MC and a couple minor characters and 1 basic phone/portable system game which did the same as the original pokemon game.
Digimon always had the potential to do greater things than Pokemon, but just became stupid with the evolutions and whatnot.

That has a lot to do with how Pokemon are treated in the show though. They are essentially animals, so if one is unique it immediately peaks out. Digimon established a free for all world, so random strong guys beign villians make sence, good example being Etemon who is season ones equivalent to some mad max gang leader.
Pokemon did a better job to make the games feel seperate but connected though, so the 1 big legendary feels special.

Digimon could have been like that if they adapted their lore into anime form. Do something good with the Royal Knights besides rebooting them every time they show up, explain the 4 dragon gods, the 10 ancient warriors, the dark area that got discarded on 02 and we only saw a glimpse of it in Frontier and stop fodderising Mega mons (there was a Dukemon just hanging around as a shop owner in Frontier, where Seraphimon got killed like a bitch too and let's not even get started with Dross Wars killing Neptunemon and Volcanimon on the first 10 episodes)

That's it, consistency. Digimon lacks power levels and it's usually a let down while you know Mewtwo or Charizard always mean business in Pokémon.

Everything is better than Frontier but Savers must be pretty bad itself if Xros Wars was better but almost all the Digimon series suffered from a lack of good waifus and SOL. But I do feel bad for the Digimon fandom after it ended since it was the last chance that the anime will ever have a sexy ass milf Digigirl like Mienumon or Lilithmon lusting after the MC's dick on an adventure or at least any human and Digigirl relationships.
