Darling in the Franxx

What went so wrong? I don't think I've ever seen an anime go from extremely hype, to disliked, to acting like it never existed faster than one, it doesn't even get fanart anymore.

The last 8 episodes.

nvm I only just noticed there's a thread about this already

sorry

The last arc was disappointing and stupid. I don't think anyone wanted to see a war against aliens, we wanted to see a rebellion against the system that held the kids down.
Not to mention, both main romances had amnesia getting in the way.
Hiro never went full oni.
02 turning into a spaceship was kind of stupid.
None of the plot points involving Ichigo in any way went anywhere.
It's like whoever made the first half just quit partway through and whoever made the second half just didn't care.

They wanted another Evangelion but didn't get lucky enough to have all the random bullshit line up cohesively. Lightning doesn't strike twice.

Same thing that happened to eva 23 years prior.
>Loser otakus see the first few episodes and predict a pattern.
>Loser otakus want the show to go in a samey predictable way that's easy on their peanut brains.
>Director has a vision of somewhere unique to take the show that does not follow a pattern or a predictable path
> Director takes show in a wild directiong
>Otakus flip shit
>Otakus try and point fingers at random people to try and guess who took their perfect paradise from them
>Otakus write director death threats.

That pattern is very prominent in any studio that dares to try anything interesting. that's where the gainax ending name came from.

I'm betting my left nut we'll get a Franxx film or two retconning the second half, since they're so eager to take cues from their past.

Except no one even cared about the ending and just forgot about it. Shit mechs, shit story, shit characters, shit pacing and all it had going for it was Zero Two. Unique direction is a bit vague too, because it just ripped off other Gainax shows so that's lazy writing. It didn't even stay true to it's own themes. Come back after 23 years to see if this shit is still popular and not just another Aldnoah.Zero or Valvrape instead of potential cult classic like Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho and Anohana

You see, just like I said, peanut brain otakus spaz out.
Keep screaming into the void brotha.

So just the picture you posted alone reminds me what I loved about the series. You've these 10 kids who for the most part are all lovable, fun to watch and who you've been sympathizing with because their lives have been stripped of all the chances for proper emotional growth and all the things you got to experience when you were a kid/going through puberty. You see the boys start to squabble and get awkward about their attraction to the girls. You get to see the girls enjoy making flowery headbands for eachother to make their makeshift wedding special for their friends. You get to see their relationships form, their opinions about the world around them grow as their perception grows thanks to Dr. FranXX pulling some strings. It was a deeply personal story about these characters and their relationships/communication with one another. And it was so good to watch. I cared about them so much and made a point to be home every Saturday morning to qatch the episode as soon as I could. I re-marathoned all the episodes after the first 15 came out. There was shit in 16 and 17 that made me really emotional and got me so excited for what might come in the finally. Then they crashed the wedding and it just went downhill from there.

Like they just dumped all that shit in the fucking garbage and turns into a boring, lifeless, ugly mess. Poorly thought out action. The story turning back on itself with the fuckjng forced memory loss bullshit. An ending that NOBODY fucking wanted. It didn't send a message. It didn't work into a theme the show had. It was just Nishigori trying to do what Imaishi did with TTGL but Nishigori is nowhere fucking near as competent at Imaishi and had not set the series up to have any kind of satisfying ending that could have come through self sacrifice of the characters. Making the ending bittersweet for the sake of it does not make you a better fucking director.

I'm still mad. Fuck Nishigori. I hope the manga fixes shit.

>It's like whoever made the first half just quit partway through and whoever made the second half just didn't care
It was the same people. Extensive planning went into the first half and the concept was something Nishigori had been conceptualizing for years. But for the second half they literally admitted to just winging it and figured it'd work out. I dunno how they got the funding for such a flimsy plan but I think the team was so gung-ho about it because it was a huge amount of ex-Gainax members getting to work together again (Trigger, A1 and some freelancers) but as the production fell apart a lot of the people who could have helped to salvage the show, distanced themselves from it. I heard rumors of disagreements taking place and Trigger essentially pulling out of the project in second half because of clashing. Just a mess, that had so much potential.

They ran out of budget for EVA and corrected their mistake a year or two later. Nishigori quite literally fumbled everything about FranXX. Do not compare the two.

The anime ending disappointed me personally. Hopefully the manga will end a little differently. I wonder if they'll diverge from the anime so much with the manga that zero two and hiros relationship is completely different. Like they never get together or something.

They didn't plan anything out in the second half. This was admitted by the staff

Just another case of poor story planning. I really can't believe how much the fucked up the potential the first half gave to the story. It's like everything was going good up until episode 15 and then everything dropped like a rock. 3 episodes on Mitsukoko was a mistake

I hate that one of the best flashback episodes I've ever seen came out of this garbage

Based anohana poster

>that rushed clusterfuck of asspulls that ripped off 20 other shows
>hurr you otakus just don't like anything UNPREDICTABLE

I felt this OST was used to it's fullest potential in that episode. I still listen to a few of the tracks every now and again. And all the EDs.

Terrible show all around.

I just went and rewatched it, it was so good. That's what I loved out this show. I'm dissapointed all over again now.

That other user is not wrong about otakus disliking unpredictable directions, though.
That still doesn't mean that the show was any good, but it's true that the otaku are always dumb autistic morons.

Which is good of course, because it's those autistic moronic otaku that keep spending enough money into this whole animu business to make it profitable enough for old men in suits to consider financing even more animu shows, which we smart superior westerner pirates can steal and watch for free.

It started going downhill in the 2nd cour, especially in its latter part, only to end in a disaster which pretty much contradicted and removed almost every theme the first part had built up while also giving up entirely on any notion of in-universe consistency in the ending. It made the whole series into a confused mess about nothing in particular. The 2nd cour overall fumbled so badly that it's hard to believe it was made by the same people.

Let's be honest, the manga is worse than the anime, it has no souls unlike the anime.
The only good DitF manga are from mato, usagizado and drfrt0ma.

Attached: cpyyy9bs7ei21.jpg (546x399, 45K)

It has better planning

The show dropped the ball when they made Hiro's Oni-aids vanish after episode 5 and wasted a fuckload of time on the boring side characters, NTR drama, etc. the whole aliens shit is bad enough but the real problem was that the general direction of the plot was pretty bad.

I remember when the ardent 02waifufags claimed that the show would never kill off 02 because of the jian bird symbolism.

It was funny and great how the jian bird was just a sign of an ugly mutant that died off in space, fighting against an evil alien mutant jian.

>usagizado and drfrt0ma
Those are not official who cares. Also shit taste senpai, the first half is about the same, the second half is shaping up to be vastly superior to the show's

Attached: 1550948951442.png (822x1200, 633K)

I don't remember anyone saying that, they said the show would either kill both or kill neither, and it killed them both, so those people were right.

I don't know, I loved episode 6 personaly and I don't know what they will do if Hiro kept his oni-aids but it seems that Yea Forums had a lot of theories about that before.

>otaku get baited by cute character designs into watching
>show hits them with NTR right in the beginning
>show hits them yet again with NTR and has female characters act 3DPD
>plot completely derails into aliens and shit
>main couple dies
Is it really surprising that people hated this?

Sorry I can't fix shit taste you will know the truth when you grow up.

I was quite sure most people believed it would pull an Eureka Seven ending or both of them would die and basically both of those things happened

Episode 6 was a Pyrrhic victory. It was good on its own but it also doomed the plot because it prevented it from getting interesting.

Otaku always deserve to be baited and then humiliated by having wasted their money on products from such kinds of shows.

Pre-orders can be cancelled and a lot of money is made by selling merchandise, advertisement contracts, etc.

I don't think so, they were MANY ways to have a great story after that episode, that was since this episode that I started getting really interested into the show but I was scared of the direction it will take when I watched the preview of episode 7 knowing Nishigori directed Idolm@ster.

Who will be getting official lewds tomorrow?

There's nothing better than knowing that a bunch of dumb otaku wasted their money on dumb plastic figurines.

wtf why are you even here? you one of soros's drones getting ready for the primaries?

The second half

bomp

because it got overshadowed by better shows.

Of those which you said only Mob psycho will become a cult classic anime
Maybe the manga of SnK too but not the anime

I just finished watching it yesterday. The alien shit really came out of left field and wasn't particularly good, so the ending felt unsatisfying. Other than that I enjoyed it quite a bit. I can see why some would get upset over the constant NTR; personally, I found it hilarious.

The whole alien plan and going to space was a mistake. Trigger wanted to go full Gurren Lagann again.
If they stayed on earth and if the council was just a bunch of old men ruling the world, we could had a less exagerated ending. It's like the writers were scared to go too much in political stuff and decided to lowball with "it's okay, it was aliens, ningen is okay".
Klaxxos would have been better as earth's self defense system once critical magma level is reached.
The morale of the story was fine, loving, dying and leaving a legacy. I guess Abe forget the final funds.

It did the typical post-Eva mecha thing of trying to 180° you with
>THIS WAS ACTUALLY A MUCH BIGGER PLOT THE WHOLE TIME
without realizing you can't do that shit unless you're an accidental artistic genius or an actual autistic accident. Basically, the production team tried to punch up a weight class, and got KO'd in the first round. Tie that together with Trigger being attached (which guarantees unwarranted hype and eventual disappointment), and you get the result: a show that had every bit of reason to be good that got axe-murdered by its own production team trying to make it something it shouldn't have been.
Trigger, especially, needs to figure out how to stop chasing Eva, TTGL, etc. It's never going to be pre-2000's Gainax, where every show is an industry-defining, runaway success or at least a cult-classic.

Now, FranXX was bad, but comparing to AO, the worst anime ever made, is just silly.

Attached: Eureka7AO_sc7_copy.jpg (1920x1080, 253K)

I miss Zero Tsu.

Why do people still act like the people at Trigger were the main creative minds behind this show? They weren't. They didn't save she show and I'm sure they were part of the problem that turned it into what it became, but he way you fixate on the fact trigger was involved in production would imply that you know at least a bit about the production process itself. This was the brain child of Atsushi Nishigori and Naotaka Hayashi. Trigger did some planning, animation and storyboarding, the majority of which was in the first half of the show. That's it.

/ourboy/ Fatoshi losing to a bisexual twink ruined the series.

>What went so wrong?
Terrible writing and terrible characters.

AO at least had god tier mecha animation by based bones.

First part had some serious flaws though, primarily with how they'd give a character a significant plot point then completely ignore or half ass it past the episode it happened in. Satan just forgets everything in ten and barely questions anything. People that have significant reason to talk to each other avoid each other for five straight eps like Kokoro and Mitsuru, Goro with Ichigo, Futoshi and Ikuno. Miku is just there and Franxx is barely relevant.

Wasted potential. I still liked it.

Don't be like that, even if he lost Kokoro to Mitsuru he still got a wife. What was her name again? I don't rememer. Anyways, I think you meant /yourboy/ instead but why use "Fatoshi" then, hmm

Attached: 1521921115188.png (1366x768, 506K)

Same, honestly. I loved the show for its characters and I hoped for a good development, the second half of the show drops nearly everything that made it enjoyable: no exploration of sexuality, the relationships between the main cast remained stale and didn't evolve, I thought that I was fucking tripping during the last couple of episodes

Badly planned stroy.

The setting was great and the TTGL like stroy was not bad, but they fucked up with the pacing and the reveals.

I never said it was perfect but I loved it at first flawed as it may have been. I'm not saying it was perfect and I'm not saying the first half was more enjoyable for me because of anything trigger had to do with the story. Because again, they basically didn't. There is even less of a chance of them being involved in the first half as creative roles because the director said in an interview he had been thinking about that portion of the story for years prior to the production, and found a writer who would best fit his vision (Naotaka Hayashi). The show certainly looked way better in the first half. And that was due to more of Trigger's presence. What point were you trying to make by replying to both of my posts?

>I don't think I've ever seen an anime go from extremely hype
>What went so wrong?
By not living up to the hype, it’s not good by any means, the fights were pretty shit and only relevant because of all the melodrama and the fact that the mecha were piloted by not!sex. A lot people that like the show say the first fifteen episodes were the only good part about show, which they’re right, but that doesn’t mean they were great episodes, just better than the latter half. Also the characters weren’t good either, most of not all of them were pretty unlikable and generic

The show was shit, Hiro was a bland protag, Zero Two a inconsitent waifu bait but I can't help but love them for some reason, probably because they were profoundly beautiful together.

Attached: 1550956809062.jpg (2048x1482, 255K)

I didnt even mention trigger or them being the reason why the first half was good. Just pointing out that a lot of the same flaws that were present in the second half were there as early as ten, and why some anons like myself got frustrated with the show, because the writers were always afraid to commit.

The first 12 episodes. The last 11 episodes.

it sucked
i hear a lot of "the ending was bad" and "it wasn't good after episode 15." i don't know who started this meme because the rest of it wasn't good either.

>dude lets rip off NGE and forget everything that makes NGE good lmao
>dude lets force drama between the characters and only give like 4 characters any development lmao
>dude aliens n shit lmao

Attached: 1549933406923.jpg (655x702, 187K)

This was one of the few shows where the predictions being made by Yea Forums would have actually been leagues better than the drivel they went with.
I don't know why they went with generic alien story out of fucking nowhere instead of making it a story about rebellion against the forces that be. The ending could have been basically identical (rebuilding, family making, 02 and hiro either dying or fucking off into the desolate world for whatever reason) without alien space bullshit.

After 02 stops being emo the whole thing just goes down the shitter at lightning speed. And the ending is one of the dumbest in anime history.

bomp

My main problem is that the finale just sort of sidelines all the kids. When VIRM and the Klaxxosaurs start fighting, the children are basically incidental to the whole thing.

I mean, they don't really take any constructive action. They're absurdly far out of their depth. More, it's really strange that the 'main couple' dies without having sex or children, especially since it's implied Hiro can breed with 02.

>I don't think I've ever seen an anime go from extremely hype, to disliked, to acting like it never existed faster than one, it doesn't even get fanart anymore.
It still gets fanart, or well at least zero two does, shit I don't think many people act like it never existed, but most will say shit like "watch it until episode 15 and drop it".

>What went so wrong? I don't think I've ever seen an anime go from extremely hype

Attached: hype.png (850x1200, 471K)

Ichigo has been underrated

This. The whole series was meh, but episode 13 was very good and feelsy.

The series would probably be better if it took the darker turn. Not the alien stuff and not even "we can just defeat the antiutopia rulers and fulfill the Abe commandment". Instead go full "if a group of children rebel against the government, even symbolic victory is close to impossible."
