Kite was the closest thing Gon had to a father figure and didn't understand the emotions he was feeling. He wasn't searching Ging because he wanted a Dad but because it sounded like fun. Gon himself is incredible selfish and hypocritical, he can only relate to people through his own world view. Leorio, the King, Pitou and Youpi are the only non shit people in hxh.
Pitou is the only reason I watched Hunter x Hunter.
At first Pitou didn't want to fight if there was a non 0% chance of Gon just killing Komugi out of anger and spite. After the fact, Pitou was grateful that Gon let her heal Komugi that he listened to her request, there was also the hostage sitaution with Killua having Komugi. After hearing from pouf that Komugi was safe and realizing Kite couldn't be saved, Pitou decided to kill Gon because he was potentially very dangerous and angry.

As a human bean, I think Gon was pretty justified in taking Komugi hostage. If he didn't have Pitou shitting bricks she would have lopped his head off.

To be fair though, Gon actively facilitated a scenario where he had no other options. he pushed his friends away, went far away from the others and refused to let them come with him, Left his hostage far far away where Pitou could not confirm her safety and went into a dark secluded area with an Ant that was far and beyond stronger than him.
All of this could've been avoided if he'd gone through the effort of further hindering and crippling Pitou while he could (even putting APR on Pitou would've at least given him a fighting chance but he refused even that assist). Gon was fully blinded by his rage.
