Harem anime would be better with more fleshed out male MCs. The core of harem is how the girls interact with him but when he's a blank state, the number of situations you can get is very shallow. It doesn't help that in half of harem series the girls are just archetypes.
Also harem anime is usually main girl plus some more instead of them being on a roughly equal ground and therefore a not real harem. It's not fun.
I only like it if it's a true harem aka all the girls end up with him in the end. Mushoko Tensei and Sevens are great examples of that

It's true that harem anime would be more enjoyable with a variety of MC personalities, that's why every now and then one gets popular, because it just has a guy with a fucking personality. If he's a blank fucking slate and the girls like him because he's 'kind', man, it's forgettable.
