The problem with movies past the third movie, maaaaybe the Latios and Latias movie if you wanna be generous, is that they stopped being movies first. Now they're shilling the shillmon features first and movies second. In fact, originally the movie was supposed to start with Ash battling that random trainer and getting Mewtwo's invitation. But they felt that this would be too sudden, so they added an the intro with the scientists in the jungle, and that's how it aired in Japanese theatres.

The setup for the league was horrible especially with how much they focused on Greninja over everyone else and how bad the rivals were, Serena's idol sidestory lead to nowhere and needed asspulls for her to win, and let's not get into how the frog's prophecy to save Kalos ended with him being nothing more than radar and had Alain saved the day. Team Flare was an absolute joke with their entire motivation being 'Humans are greedy, therefore we should destroy the world'. And then there's the league battle. We all know how that ended up so nothing more needed to be said.

It's always been a pretty fair assessment that the Pokemon movies are lengthy special episodes of the anime with a bigger animation budget. They still look much the same, just prettier and occasionally showcasing OLM flexing their new toys like the mid-00s movies having lots of CGI blended in with the 2D. Decent 2D animation, though perhaps not quite touching the cream of the crop of the industry.
And yet, even disregarding all the opinions on how well/badly the original character designs translate over to 3D models, going by this trailer I can't really see a reason for this movie remake to exist. It doesn't supplant the original; there's plenty of panning shots over 3D background scenery that has been made more detailed than what the original's 2D artists left sparser when cutting corners, like the jungle vegetation or Mewtwo's Giger-gothic lab-castle. But despite this new attention to detail I also see areas lacking it where there was plenty before. The scene with Meowth and Mew is a good example; in the original, Mew teleports away with a cute flash of white before it's shape blends into the background, a relatively simple but very cool-looking trick of 2D animation. The scene in the trailer simply has it disappearing with some generic ball-shaped particle effect. For another example of the remake's direction missing some of the great details of the original, Mewtwo's descent to introduce himself to his guests likewise loses some of its impact without his eyes menacingly beaming with blue-white light.
Either do the original justice, or have enough new in it to make it a worthwhile addition. Don't half-ass things.
