The show works better when it is more upbeat, lighthearted and colorful (with a few darker scenes here or there) and THEN it becomes darker and more gloomy, when Yorknew and finally CA arcs hit. Starting off with the kind of mood you would expect from Gon vs Pitou is just poor direction, trying to make the show darker than it really is supposed to be.

It would take them two episodes to cover the second-to-last arc (maybe three), yet the current arc would take up way more episodes because of the sheer amount of talking there is. The anime would also have to take A LOT of liberties since a good amount of panels doesn't have a background, not to mention that most of the thought processes don't have anything visual to them (it's just pure text). The anime adaptation of the current arc will have a completely different feel from the manga, but I'm sure it would still turn out great.
