You're ignoring the underlying causes. If anything, the years afterward were less plagued by starvation and poverty, even if it was still widespread.
The Cold War was about the two most powerful countries trying to control the world economy. In the end, the USA had a much greater social stability which outlasted the unrest and extreme conditions in communist Europe (that Lenin and Stalin did nothing to improve).
The USSR definitely could have accepted aid, but with the Cold War starting they decided that foreign interests were more important than domestic health.
China is a country that is capitalistic with its foriegn relations yet very authoritarian with domestic affairs. It can be done, but the USSR decided not to take that route. They had literally everything going for them and made the wrong choice every step of the way. This is no case of a small country being wrapped up in international investments, this was the leading union of the second world and they had all the power to do what they wished, yet the federal government neglected its citizens and valued them only as far as what they would do to survive. What kind of place needs to have a wall that keeps people from leaving?

When you take away capital incentive from labor, people just don't see reason to do very much. Even in mixed economies there can be problems with taxes that are too high, where people who make too much will stop pushing forward or get up and leave the city/country. New York City can raise taxes so high before businessmen decide to catch a train elsewhere, and Belgium can only take so much of your money before you realize that a 50% bracket is stupid and you're better off making money on investments. It's no coincidence that their GDP per capita cuts just shy of their highest bracket ($43,000 for both).
