Why is this series so damn trashy (well, the novels, anyway)? The world building is kind of neat, but there's so much retarded fan service, poorly written action scenes, and a bunch of one-note characters who show up for a chapter or two before dying or some shit. I'm a patient dude, so I've gotten to volume 20 in the original Index series, but it's such an inconsistent mess.

From learning of the Magic side, exploring how each of the Churches and their sects operate to learning of new locations in the city and this is just within the first few volumes is all part of that World Building.

If you’re able to say “x + y outputs z” every time and it works, it builds confidence and makes them believe that is correct, which enforces the behavior via feedback loop. If the calculations aren’t there then you get ducky shit and people wouldn’t know how to progress as easily without a scientific method guiding their thought. It would be something like how Ars Magna could do all sorts of shit but can also backfire horribly depending on mental state, calculations are like a sort of check that prevents espers from Ars Magnaing themselves to powerlessness/chaotic results

Plus, a magician is unlikely to suddenly pick up how to use an esper power so they would need practice as well. Sure you can go to AC without being in the program. You just need to sneak into the city and then get someone to hack you into the register and then join when a school suddenly gets 50% of its student body as new students so you dont even stand out.

Also, most of the audience probably wouldn't want to read the exact calculations every time an esper power is used. It's a chuuni series about people with superpowers, not a scientific paper.

The effects of WR are actually noticeable in normal tests unlike IB, so he could have tricked them into thinking he's a gemstone. Lack of AIM would be a problem, but gemstones have weird AIM and are poorly understood in general, so they'd probably just write that down as something that needs to be researched.

Also worth noting that Harumi didn't actually create the network to enhance weak espers or multiskill, (that was bait and a side effect, respectively) but because she wanted to use it for some actual math because they wouldn't give her permission to use tree diagram.

Just a few novels ago, Misaki was able to calculate and then keep up with an object (a coin) moving at relativistic speeds and the narration stated very clearly that was exactly what was going on, so the answer is yes, high level espers absolutely do think faster than regular people. That doesn't automatically grant them superhuman reactions, though. That's a whole other different issue.
