This isn't really an asspull as it was foreshadowed, has rules that it follows that don't contradict previous rules, and has a reason besides getting the MC out of a jam and a reason why others in his same group don't have the same ability, he's not 'special' he's just the only one to have his life fucked up so hard that it turns on.

This reminds my of that manga(forgot the name) where the guy is a hero and his power is "heal." He's look down upon so he is basically the pack mule of the 4 hero's. So he "heals" the world to a previous point in time(really?)-- and goes back in time to get revenge on the other hero's. Like literally, the MC of tate no yuusha could have had a spear instead and im sure he'd have some bullshit like making the attribute of the spear "heal" and everytime he stabs someone it heals them instead.

That was one of the cutest parts of the episode.
But in a sad way. The way he declines and the excuse he gives off makes it seem like he feels guilty over what happened and can't handle sleeping by her side.
It goes well with his ongoing trait of displaying his personal issues regarding morality, self image and self esteem.

Think of it this way, people were going to die if he didn't do something. But he would eventually die if he does everything people need for free.
Fair is fair, if they want to be saved they gotta pay and if they don't their people will die and laying it out that clearly is the best way to get people to get serious and make the right choice.

I'm gonna be real with you guys.
I've loved this show so far but last episode seriously disappointed me. I have no issue with the CGI, or the sudden powerup or any plot element.
What disappointed me was the execution.
As anime only I was hyped about seeing the curse series activated, the shield of hatred.
I expected there to be some really serious, really intense emotional build up leading to it. I expected some real suffering and emotional outburst.
Instead we saw Firo get eaten, which of course we know she doesn't really die so it carries no weight to us, and a bunch of random flashbacks of Malty. None of the scene where they take Raph's seal off. And no real dialogue or emotion. There were those scenes with Naofumi slowly going insane, but those seemed to be metaphorical visual representations of parts of his psyche because in the real world he was still just there standing with the shield.
What was going through his mind was vague and non specific. Yeah I guess he was angry and hated everything and got mad Filo died and was remembering people he hated. But it could have been executed in a way that could have actually carried that feeling of rage and despair better. Even the previous episodes had expressed those feelings better.
I was legitimately feeling his anger and frustration back when they took Raph's seal. Or when they accused him of rape. But this time the emotions felt flat and it looked so silly and goofy instead that it actually felt like funny. Kind of like watching any "emotional" part of a show like Code Geass, it lost all seriousness.
Judging by all the novelfag posts complaining over the lack of monologue I guess the LN actually does a decent job with portraying his emotions leading up to the hatred shield, shame the anime couldn't do anything good with it.
Of course I'm still watching the show, I like it a lot for the most part. But this part should have been way cooler than it was.
The sol after the fight was my favorite part of the episode.

It is also cutting content and didn't even commit to making Naofumi a complete edgelord like he actually is which leaves the series with an inconsistent lukewarm MC. At the start of the episode he staying up late making jewelry for his companions with a smile on his face and half way through the episode he's being overwhelmed by his own rage and screaming about killing everyone and hating everything? That scene would have been 100x times better if they had made it more psychedelic and trippy.

It could have been better if it started at the dragon fight and explained how they got there's in a flashback. The fight needed more monologue, more trippy effects, more drama, and less Naofumi making jewelry

The fight was never going to be good. Too short, lame effects, no suspense. Every fight scene is too short in this anime. None of the visuals are impressive nor is the character design. We all fucking knew bird-loli was fine from the get go. The whole anime is meh but for some reason i keep watching.

Pretty much agreed, to me it seems obvious that the most important part of those fights are not the combat but the emotional component.
But vs the shield hero that worked out well.
This time it came short.
The resolution after the fight felt as more important than the fight in the end. Even though the execution was still subpar.
He came to that world, was betrayed by it and felt true despair. Then he met Raph and also Filo and things actually got better for him for a while. And then the dragon seemed to kill Filo and he feared losing everything again, and after it turns out they were all fine he finally knew what happiness felt like again.
He came to really value what he had after he had to face the possibility of losing it.
They did show him suffering a lot so it's not as if they didn't try to convey it, they just didn't do it well enough to really get those emotions across to us as audience, at least based on most comments people didn't really resonate with the scenes vs the dragon.
Lack of dialogue, lack of internal monologue, clear indications of his emotions, the scene lacked the stress needed to make a viewer feel claustrophobic in that kind of tight scenes.
