Thriller Bark also had some set up for Wano, Kaido and BM, but it's really since PH that the story actually started going in that direction.

These are some of the main reasons I think Carrot should join the Strawhat crew.
Reason 1: She is a girl
The majority of the Strawhats are male, so balancing out that ratio will have benefits.

There are enough haki users on the crew already, and the ones that don't have it use other methods of dealing with battle. Carrot can take on opponents that other Strawhats would either find too easy, or too difficult.
Reason 3: She's a mink
It makes complete sense to have a fishman and a mink on the crew, as those races are essentially opposites; and Carrot herself is a foil to Jinbe. Not to mention that both races will are inherently tied to the fate of the Strawhats.
Reason 4: There is no longer any time to introduce new possible members, and among the existing candidates (law, kinemon, etc) Carrot has the least baggage.
Reason 5: She is cute and I love her

Low urgency
