It's pretty apparent that most modern shows are just paint bucket filled lineart because of how bare bones they look. Adobe aftereffects won't change that. Digital is used because it's faster and cheaper, and it shows.

It really hasn't. TV quality took one giant leap during the 00s. Dennou Coil is better and more consistently animated than anything you'll ever find pre-2000s. Similar things can be said for many other shows like IM@S, most of KyoAnus' catalogue, Kamichu and many more. Even high budget pre-2000s TV anime hand no more than a handful of well animated sequences, see NGE or Escaflowne. They weren't remotely as consistently high quality. The highs of individual cuts might be higher, but the average of a given show is way, way lower.

Dennou Coil is better animated than Conan. No idea what you want. It is OBJECTIVELY superior on a technical leve and everything else for that matter since it has actual thought put into it. Violet Evergarden was weird, despite the clothes, eyes and hair being so detailed, the facial structure and shading is still your generic flat dorito face. It might work in works like pic related where the rest of the design is the same level of detail, but in VEG it just looked off, like the face was in 2D while the rest of her design had more depth to it, I don't know how to explain it.

You can simply download Nadia, SDF, 0079, LotGH etc. They have enough quality to make hundreds of gifs. Unfortunately I accidentally deleted one of my WebM folders that had many of the animation blunders from those shows. Like phasing projectiles etc, especially prominent in LotGH.

I’ve been thinking about people who only watch a certain segment of anime (decades, ‘classics’, with positive critical reception) and how that warps your perception to the rest of medium. For example, I finished watching gun buster and while the experience was positive I think it’s unfair to compare the rest of anime to a late 80s OVA series from a studio that was in their prime. I’m trying to keep my expectations in check when I’m watching older shows.

The lighting and color grading in old shows made the difference as it was blended within the coloring process itself. Nowadays you just slap a blur vignette and put a gray adjustment layer on top of the workspace with After Effects and call it a day.
