Picked it up a while back due to your chart, (alongside the Vampire Hunter D movies). I keep getting surprised at how hard it is to put down some of these late-70s series once you start them. If there's one thing they seem to get consistently right it's pacing and cliffhangers. Thanks for the suggestion.

Really? I find it's pretty much the opposite. There are far more characters I like than series. I even tend to like characters in series I dislike. And deciding which of those stand out enough for me to be called favourites is even harder. Which is why I have so far not managed to make a character-3x3 that's completely independent of my favourite anime or manga (picking the best characters within a specific anime or manga is something I find considerably easier).

Made another one, with my favourite nameless (or background) characters (or character designs) from my favourite anime.

I just find it easier to judge characters based on personal likes or dislikes that I have with actual people. It's mostly just a matter of personal preference that I can easily sort out. Doing the same with a whole story instead requires a bit more thought and reflection.

Why? She's the reason the film as a whole works. The ending especially cemented her in my mind as the most interesting character

She always felt more like a plot point than an actual character, with her being the catalyst for everything around her as she waifishly shuffled from scene to scene. Which was intentional, since that's part of the movie's big motif. I liked it, but I guess my point is that it was more about what the character embodied that was interesting than the girl herself.
