user is talking about status quo series. The point of status quo series is that the reader knows what to expect, and can read the series casually. Some status quo series are disguised as romance, and you can tell by the way that after every episode of romantic development, things snap back to their point of origin.

Many long-running series preserve some kind of status quo, even if shonen shows inflate the powerlevel to make you think that things are getting somewhere.

what you never see is some background characters getting together in a non-autistic fashion as the MC does their MC shit without needless melodrama just two characters who click and try out being together and find out that they work just fine and are quite peaceful about it

It's because the lengths series can go to prevent MC from having sex or just a romantic relationship are often utterly ridiculous. First writers surround a healthy Average High School Boy™ with 10/10 semen demons madly in love with him, and then have him either ignore them, run away from them or even act like some martyr. It's not even about sex, it's about the character being infuriatingly nonsensical. When you see MC going "no way, fag" for the nth time, you just start treating exceptions like the Second Coming.
