Chrollo used many abilities from comrades which were obviously acquired through consent, making him primarily an Ability Borrower rather than an Ability Stealer. The only ability we know for sure he stole without consent is the one Neon Nostrade, whom he managed to trick, but that proved easy since she had no nen training at all.

But Chrollo's worse weakness, although it may not be apparent at first, is that he loses a stolen ability if the original owner dies. Unless Chrollo kidnaps all of his previous victims or mindcontrol them in some way or is otherwise able to track them and know whenever they are in danger of dying, this fatal weakness can always kill him. The death of a previous victim can happen at any time which makes all his strategies unreliable and dangerous. A group of people could easily kidnap a victim of ability stealing and kill them while Chrollo is engaged in battle. Their ability can vanish from the book when Chrollo is about to use it, or perhaps worse, their ability can vanish while Chrollo is in the middle of using it, possibly killing him instantly.

If he fights with 10 abilities he should be considered as being passively supported by 10 allies and he should be compared to a person fighting with 10 other allies on site.

Looking at those requirement, I wonder how strict the first requirement is. He has to see the ability with his own eyes. If the ability is felt but not seen through the eyes (example: it causes hunger) does that mean Chrollo can't possibly steal it?

Not necessarily but it seems abnormal and exceptional. Neon Nostrade's oracle ability disappeared from his book which doesn't seem to bother him much because he already knows his stolen powers can vanish anytime.

Chrollo's drawback is that he's limited to the abilities he can actually steal, and he's generally dependent on the victims staying alive. Also, he isn't aware of when the victims die. So he'll only realize he's lost an ability when he tries to look it up and it's not there.
If you tracked down and killed everyone he's stolen abilities from all he'd have left is the Sun & Moon explosive seals, and there's almost nothing he could do to stop you. Worst case scenario, he wouldn't even realize he's been crippled until you confront him and he sees nothing else in the book.

It's complicated.
Pitou was pretty androgynous at first and probably a typical Togashi trap, but as the arc went on Pitou got more and more feminine. The dead ant was even compared to a mother cat at one point fairly late in the arc, and some argue there was even a visible bust. This isn't even getting into chimera ant biology.
Apparently the 2011 anime leans heavily towards Pitou being female, but I haven't watched it so I can't say.

Maybe that's why he spends most of his time reading his book? To keep up with the changes. Also we have no idea what he does when he goes off the grid between missions. So yeah, it ain't as simple as Killing the two teammates who gave him their abilities.

It's well established in the world of HxH that nen practitioners do not speak about their abilities. Out of all the requirements on Chrollo's list, this one is clearly the harshest restriction. I don't think a fake interview and a rhetorical question will work. We only saw Chrollo acquire one ability without informed consent and the owner was a little girl with no nen training. It was the optimal and easiest target. It's hard to imagine that Chrollo can often reproduce this feat. We only know 4 of the previous owners of Chrollo's stolen abilities (out of 9 he has displayed) and out of those 4 known victims, three of them shared their abilities through consent (the owners Gallery Fake, Black Voice, Sun and Moon) and the last one is Neon Nostrade.

That was because their location was available in the hunter website as their mafia affiliation was "public". Not every nen user is going to be a part of some registry, Kakin has an entire army division of nen users nobody knew about and the Phantom Troupe also had their own teachers.

It would only be so easy to track down the abilities Chrollo has. You'd also have to know their ability was borrowed in the first place, and then connect it to a person, then track them down.

Skill Hunter is also a nen curse, meaning that unlike things like Pika's Emperor Time Chrollo can get fucked by a single Nen exorcist, which is another massive weakness other hatsu do not have.
Skill Hunter also loses the stolen hatsu if the original user dies, again, another weakness and the big reason why Hisoka targeted Kortopi and Shalnark first after getting roasted by their abilities
Before the current events Skill Hunter also had various other restrictions, like forcing Chrollo to hold the book and hold it opened in the page he needed, he could only use one hatsu at a time and also had to look in the book to find it and then activate it, now he has developed things like Bookmark so those restrictions are lifted, but Skill Hunter, while very powerful, also has very dangerous weaknesses.

I don't know. Sensui and Meruem have very little in common. Meruem feels more like a reverse Toguro. Toguro was a good guy, who became corrupted, stronger and more evil over time, while Meruem was all that, but became better over time. And while I loved Sensui for the most of the arc, he really failed me in the final stretch of the arc. First of all, that elf getup in pic related has to be one of the worst designs Togashi has ever done. Second, he has too many things going on with him. Seems like Togashi had more ideas than he could fit into one character, but he did it anyway. I liked his original setup as the rouge spirit detective who failed because of his very basic black and white morality. But then come the seven personalities (where like 3 of them are ever shown, while the others play no role at all). And then comes his ultimate motivation of wanting a good death by a worthy demon (which is basically Toguro all over again). And Finally, his defeat is the biggest asspull in the series. Basically Sensui started of good and interesting, but got way too complicated and overwritten by the end.

There doesn't need to be a catch for a Nen ability to be OP. As long as you've trained your hatsu a lot, it can be as strong as you want. How much of a boost they'll get from a nen oath is all based on the user's own mental perception of how big the drawback is. But if they just have a lot of potential to begin with, then they may not even need a particularly strong oath or a big drawback.

First of all, I watched it in October, last year, so no nostalgia goggles here. Second, I'm fully willing to admit that the Saint beasts arc was garbage. But it wasn't that long and the very next arc picks up the animation big time. And the dark tournament arc has Sakuga in every fight, more than your average shonens anyway. There is very little speed lines, still frames and other cheap tricks used in those fights. Every move the characters make are fully animated, giving every fight very fluid and smooth movement. Im still sticking to my belief that YYH is one of the greater accomplishments of tv anime.

I just realized that Raizen and Meruem are really similar characters. Both started out as the strongest of their kind, and as kings who are pretty brutal and eat humans. this is just a theory, but I kinda think Chrollo lied about the whole "Nen after death" thing regarding his ability. I also believe that he just seems "OP" because he is a villain (aka a lying shit) and so bends rules, words and scenarios to his liking.

I think he said that the Sun & Moon user died as a Red Herring, so that Hisoka wouldn't go and search out all the people who's ability he used.

Still though, I'm not really sure about this honestly. To me everything here looks sketchy over all. I think it never got confirmed what happened to Owl, so I bet he's still alive.

Don't misunderstand though, I don't think that "Nen gets stronger after death" straight up does not exist, I just don't think that Chrollo can capitalize on it with his ability like he said.
Because it would've been way easier to just tell your opponent "Oh yeah the guy died." instead of giving him the idea to hunt down the people Chrollo took his abilities from.

I think that he has some secret about his ability. Some factor that could harm him, that he keeps as a super secret, so he can appear to be ultra powerful to the troupe and his enemies. There might be something that he has to do between the missions. Maybe he also goes into coma from using the bandits secret, but unlike Kurapika who is an mc with friends and such, we just don't see Chrollo crawling into his secret hideout and shutting down for some time. He must have some flaws to his power and they might be the key to defeating him. And him being all secretive and mysterious lends to the idea that there is more to him than meets the eye.

Definitely not. Nen after death was key to the ability maintaining with Skill Hunter closed or not being used for it. That, and Chroilo was pretty transparent with his treatment of Hisoka: He figured Hisoka just wanted to challenge himself against Chrollo and nothing more. He showed his whole hand to Hisoka, gave him the option of backing out, and didn't seem to have any notion that Hisoka would resort to killing the other spiders to get to him.

Is it just me, or does Hisoka seem kinda weak? Everyone and their mother has a cool ass secret ability, while Hisoka has sticky goo that also stretches. Sure he fights like a madman, but his ability was only strong when nen was first introduced. The scale Hisoka can use it on, through the shape manipulation he gets using more basic transmutation, basically makes it decent telekinesis, with some extra fluff features. I mean really, think of all the things he's done with it, from launching decently lethal attacks from odd angles without indication (sans gyo), reflecting attacks, forcibly moving/tripping up his opponents, and completely evading attacks he otherwise couldn't react to, basically giving him a situational super speed.

It's just a more traditional exploitation of a single concept than the fine print contracts a lot of newer techniques are. Hardly makes it weak.

Adding, in some respects he's capable of doing manipulator like things better than most manipulators. He's not all in on one thing, or capable of "condition met, full control," but we haven't seen anyone capable of the variety he's got by just bootlegging it.

While fighting ability is nice for backup, I think the most useful troupe members are the ones who have more job (stealing) oriented abilities. That's why Kortopi, Pakunoda, Machi and Shizuku are such mvp's. Reading minds, cleaning up evidence, copying things and etc is as useful to the troupe as a really good swordsman is.

Imagine if HxH was written like Hero academia, so every time characters like Gon, Killua and Hisoka show up in a new chapter/episode, their names are displayed and their powers are explained (both in text and by the narrator). And that will happen every single chapter/episode until the end. It would be pretty neat, right?

Going off the fight, the strength of Skill Hunter to Chrollo is the ability to explore the darkness of the original user's soul.
