Stupid question, but how were lighting effects done with cels?
Was it all paint, or was there some sort of analog post-production trick going on? Because they really popped on CRTs.

Digipaint was too much in its infancy when it was adopted. There's like a period from 2001-2007 or so that I consider almost a grave yard of coloring and art. A lot of shows straddled the line, and they just look like garbage when they moved to digipaint. It's only relatively recently that good looking digipaint has come about. And many shows still end up looking washed out and lacking contrast.

is this the power of fusion?!

The analog glow effect are airbrushed on. the parts that shouldn't be affected gets masked and the airbrush is applied appropriately.

For something like the glows that have multipul colors and are overlapping I'd assume you have to draw it on a cel above everything else, mask out the shape out the flare and use several colors. after you've done that you'd airbrush without the mask to give it extra flare.
I say assume because I'm not an airbrush professional.
This isn't a cel but there's a "how to draw tutorial from 1993 gainax where they use an airbrush to do this effect on a painting ( see step 4)

I think more competent studios and productions like gainax with flcl handled the transition relatively well, but aside from singular examples there is a pocket where nobody knew how to composite, color or operate in general.
Funny how you mentioned washed out colors. cause its really one of the biggest issues they had. I assume too many artists were picking colors on white and not on gray or on a good background color and were too scared to go too extreme.
Contrast and good non daylight coloring is still a big issue in anime today.

HOLY HELL I LOVE THE MOOMINS!
I never seen it so clear or so nice sounding. I'm used to hear it through the super compressed version that was on TV When I was a kid. btw is it true that the show still doesn't have an english dub?

Either way I'm really glad the moomins is picking up popularity online

I hate Evangelion with a passion, but I won’t deny that it had some gorgeous artwork (whenever Gainax felt like it, that is)

This. The color design in Hakusho is beautiful.

Ah yes, hand drawn Cel animation. Back when they actually put EFFORT into anime. I remember those days. "sip"

I'm missing the one for episode 2.
People who act like that should neck themselves. There's a lot of good work still being put into shows nowadays.

I understand one method they did was photographing an irregular translucent paint pattern over a light table, I forgot which documentary I was looking at that showed this technique though and which animation it was but the point is that they used this technique for a very specific type of lighting effect which I think was related to a shot of a cloudy sky or something. I'd bet for many of these "tricks" you could think of they are doing a very specific process when it comes to photographing that type of scene and leveraging actual real world lighting in the production process.

Evangelion did this a ton, they'd put the cels over bright lights to make some parts "glow"

Attached: Lupin III Series 1 - 04 - One Chance For A Prison Break.jpg (4452x4320, 1.71M)

I've never heard of this technique before.
In evangelion's lighting it's very clear they used airbrush because there was a background underneath, although I'd understand if this was used for something like the fist of the north star death animations.
If you could find that documentary that would be great.

Technically you certain lighting tricks like that but I've never seen it in execution.

I love a ton of modern anime. I'm just also very found of the end of the cel era look of anime.

I wish we could have one of these threads without boring looking shit and overrated like Evangelion or Akira

1 akira so far, 4 evas, this thread is only in 30 posts too. Feel free to shape it however you want pleya

Evangelion is the top example of 90s cel animation, direction, storyboarding, everything. It actually transcends the medium.

CCS is a diatant second.

thanks doc

Also how the fuck do you expect people to know what you find boring and for them to cater to you? You must be 18+ to post here.

fuuuukkkk WHY DOES MODERN ANIME LOOK SO SHIT

Attached: toyotamitsubushi.jpg (500x300, 67K)

In general I think the last few years of the cel era had a concentration of some of the most fantastic artistic, storytelling, and cinematographic excellence in history.
Eva, cowboy bebop, even card captor sakura, which says alot considering it's a show for kids to watch while eating breakfast yet every frame looks like a damn painting.
They had a bunch of really cool moving background shots too.

theres too much garbage though i havent got the time or patience to sift through it all just to find the little morsels of good shit
im not a die hard anime fan but it was a big part of my childhood and when it's good its fucking good. every now and then i find something i like by complete accident but its mostly just utter tripe

what anime is that?

Attached: 1549846382531.gif (332x332, 1.11M)

Honestly , same. I got a life. I don't keep up with seasonal bullshit. I either find my anime by talking to friends or looking at old cel directors and directors that I like. For example one of the reasons I follow trigger is cause many of their staff worked on shows like NGW and flcl and they are trying to preserve some of that while experimenting.

The anime you see here is Japan animator expo ( it's not a convention that's the actual name) It was made by studio khara, the studio of the director of evangelion. It's a series of shorts run by different directors and has some really amazing stuff. this one is the last episode ( 36 I think) . This is also the series from which the ME!ME!ME! animation came. I'd reccomend also from there robot on the road and the 1989 comedy skit.

haha i actually have seen it already didnt notice thats where it was from.
stumbled upon it by accident a year or so ago, was very good might have to watch it again actually

Fuckin' this. Most of the official art of Rei and Asuka (and sometimes Shinji) is comfy as fuck. It's just got such a soothing aesthetic.

Redone 22 looks incedible and is up there with 16 and 18-20. Funny when you compare it to the original onair version of 22 which looked horrendous.
