I summed that up to using the source design mixed with a new look. she's aware of sex and personal space (blushing) and offended by it. so she's aware of her gender around males. that's why she seemed no younger than 10 imo. maybe the flashbacks will elaborate.

I think her views are pretty childish. She thinks sex is gross and doesn't really understand adult relationships from what I've seen, which is par for the course for little kids. Only difference is she's a lot more worldly in terms of what she's been exposed to.

Yet Mio said Dororo was mature for her age, she is simply upbeat despise her horrible situation and is not like she think sex is gross, the thing in the mountains was uncomfortable for her and the Mio experience was also an unwelcome one, she inmediately caught something was wrong with the bride party in today episode

I've been watching it for the improved depictions of actual living without these body parts/senses and what it would be like getting them back. actually being disabled by lack of these things.

It's a bit sad to see him so confused, all his life his "sight" has been his only sense to experience the world. Even though he's gotten new senses, he's never depended on them like his "vision." This episode is the first time he's fully integrated a new sense to his fighting style. That's why at the end of the episode he's ready to try speaking, he's finally accepted sound into his way of life.

I feel like as he learns more emotions he'll start becoming more expressive. He has smiled a couple times and Dororo did manage to get a chuckle out of him. And he did grimace when he got his sense of smell back and got a full noseful of sulfur.

he gets pretty emotional over pain/discomfort in general too, from stepping on fire, to being forced to hear, to having a real leg bitten off. the good pacing so far of him becoming a "human" is making this show work. I can't imagine watching it and thinking "he just needs to hurry up and have a normal personality already". it's like watching two different shows.

yes exactly. I couldn't help but think of helen keller through the first few episodes. I appreciate the creative team have been paying attention to his development, when it could be really easy as shounen to just ignore most of it (like the manga did at the time). imo this show stands out for the portrayal of a disabled person (even though he's becoming un disabled), which there aren't a lot of anime that do it.

48 was far too over the top for the more realistic direction of this anime. I almost passed on watching the series because replacing internal organs with working fakes to make up the 48 sounded ridiculous. All the 12 we know of are reasonable for a human to live without, even with the skin and nerves stretching that a bit.

If anything imo the current depiction of Hyakki did a better job to potray his condition/disabilities (and the things he did to get around it) in more interesting ways than the original one. This. The original had a great premise for a character but did not commit. Not to discredit Tezuka, but he took the easy way out by giving Hyakkimaru all the psychic workarounds so he could function like a normal person.

There's a lot of careful attention to detail in this show, it's really impressive how careful they were with stuff that most people probably won't even notice.

In an interview the character designer said at first aniki was older than now but the director said the story is sad so let us make him look cuter. So they lowered his age.

it would be great if they addressed, that he is learning but behind still or something such as that. but I feel like they'll skip over it. they've been doing pretty good with little details so far though.

He must be able to understand since he got up and headed out to kill the antlion demon after the old man told them about it. Since that was information you couldnt get from tone, he had to have understood. It's dissapointing and I wish we had some scenes with Dororo or Mio teaching him a few words to make it a little more believable.

agreed. that's why I don't think they will address it much further. but I'm glad they're not having him speaking suddenly. I'm hoping once he can see they don't rush that one. his hearing (and voice) was done really well but for making it appear he understood some things when he shouldn't.

Getting his sight will be a shock and he will need to adjust to the brightness, but I dont think it'll be nearly as bad as getting his hearing. He's always had a version of vision so he at least knows of the concept, unlike sound. What I think might concern him more is losing his ability to differentiate ghouls and demons from everything else and it might make him paranoid.

I thought of brightness and his "blind sight" to figure out who to fight. but also visual over stimulation is a thing like the hearing (which they did show, thankfully). like you said though, having the experience of hearing could make the shock less debilitating for him. so the portrayal of his loss of blind sight will probably be the focus in his difficulties having eyes.

I think it was established that she's just a random ghoul and not one of the 12 demons. Some other user claimed this became more clear due to the words used in Japanese or something that was lost in translation.

I suppose it's because the actual 12 kishin that stole the body parts are pure evil, there's no room for compassion. The spider yokai deciding to befriend a human is the sign she wasn't one.

Guts in general is just Hyakkimaru in Europe. He has the prosthetic arm, demons that haunt him, a bad attitude and a kid thief sidekick whose name has doro in it. They're both killing demons to claim something that the demons took from them.

Bandai wasn't so strong, but she was cunning. I don't think the 12 demons have to be necessarily the strongest. But they have qualities that differentiate them from the others which make them more threatening, that's why the statues in the Hall of Hell.
Even if we don't get that ending in the anime, it will always be recognized as one of the official alternative closures.
