In Sasuke's defense, Itachi was as retarded as him on that moment. I mean the answer to "How bad is it actually?" depends on which part, it's not incredibly consistent, so when in the story you're at makes a difference.

Remember how in Part 1 Naruto didn't use Talk-no-Justu and just ended up beating Gaara's ass and telling him to fuck off or he'll keep kicking his ass and Gaara acted like a total bitch out of the fear of being killed.

Fillers are mostly terrible though there's some actually good fights in them. The overall quality of the entire thing isn't very high and I think most people finished watching only because they had been watching for so many years. I dropped the anime at some point and read the manga to the end. Not really sure if it was worth it but at least I got an ending.

Both were lame. The only characters I thought were cool as a kid at that point in the show were Kakashi, Lee, Gaara and all those weird sound ninja kids.

The downside is that the most likely place to see your comrades get killed is the battle, and using Sharingan makes it so that the memory of your comrades getting killed is strongly wedged in your unconscious mind, influencing your behaviour. Basically, imagine constantly having traumatic memories in the back of your head.

You could have had Itachi as a secret good guy done correctly is Itachi maintained his persona of asshole towards Sasuke up until the end. Basically just don't have Itachi say "hey I killed our entire family because the village wanted me to do so, and we're kinda all edgelords so you can see why lol", and let Sasuke's animosity towards Itachi (who is with Akatsuki, who are the enemies of Konoha) evolve naturally into affinity to Konoha. That would make sense.

Then you could have some asshole spill the beans and say "the only reason Itachi acted the way he acted because he wanted to make you fight for Konoha" and then see Sasuke's animosity towards Itachi evolve for animosity towards Konoha.

And then you could have a character arc where Sasuke transcends his edgy nature and realizes that punishing the whole for the crimes of the few (the way Ninja world worked, the way Itachi did) is just going to contribute to the cycle of hatred, and if he wants to make a better world he just needs to stop being edgelord (albeit an edgelord for a good reason). Which is, you know, the main theme of Naruto.

Sharingan's benefit (prior to fuckery that was the whole Chakra Mecha things) was an ability to copy a lot of techniques instantly by seeing them once. Uchiha's downside was that the more they use the Sharingan, the more unhinged they become. Unconscious photographic memory neatly ties the both. And best of, you can't really help a mentally unstable OP ninja. Even if you rip out their eyes like here the damaging and traumatic memories are still present. And good luck trying to convince a mentally unstable individual that you need to blind him for the good of the all.

This would make Sasuke's arc, outlined here even more memorable. He has an edgelord nature that fates him into nothing personnel kid territory, but chooses to transcend his nature.

They either voluntarily seal their eyes so they can't use their ability and live a normal life OR they use their powers and cast out their emotional attachments for fear of losing their minds.

Except they were, because most ninja were not anbu tier. The way they talk about Anbu, makes it seem like they are a step above average ninja. The only problem is, every time Kishi wrote anbu into a chapter, it was against guys who were WAY above average ninja.

Guys team was really the best characters who all majorly got the shaft except Rock Lee who ended up as a fan favorite.
They all worked extremely hard and had really cool unique powers.

Idea and world is nice. Character basics are also nice. Writing and implementation of the ideas are pure garbage. It started ok but it got worse and worse.
