I firmly believe at this point the screenwriter fails to understand what exactly made Kemono Friends work and how exactly the whole message of friendship and teamwork conquering adversity ties in so closely to Kaban, Serval, and Bossu's growing relationship with each other. People tend to focus on Kaban and Serval's friendship, but the relationship between Serval and Boss is just as important, as is Kaban's and Boss'. These each develop throughout the first anime and it culminates in their sacrificing their own lives for each other. The Kemono Friends anime is practically centered around friendship, and the breaking of friendship between Kaban, Serval and Boss is the biggest thing completely contradictory and opposed to that core belief.

As we saw with Serval's reactions to Mirai. Even then, Kaban, Serval and (presumably) Boss all maintained the hope of meeting Mirai and becoming friends with her too. It's the inevitability of all things to end, but it's the lack of that extremely optimistic outlook that the original anime had that makes KF2 so painful. You hear time and again that Kaban and Serval can't wait to meet Mirai and it's this hope of meeting a lost friend and rekindling that friendship that makes the inevitability of falling out pointless as good friends will find a way to rekindle and come together again.

I'd guess it was just a coincidence. KF2's airing is meant to lead into the launch of the KF3 arcade and mobile games.
