Is there a good way to somehow jumpstart the progress of the cards which are recorded in an anki deck? I used a shitty anki clone that's free on ios for a while, now i want to change to actual spaced repetition. I managed to convert my deck to anki format, but the way the progress was recorded is incompatible with anki and i'm not sure what to do with all those cards i mostly know. Is bumping the number of new cards daily to like 2000 for a while the only way? I suppose even if i do that i need to go through the entire deck a lot of times. Can i manually edit the progress of individual cards?

I read every day but progress is still really slow and I probably only know like 2k words. I'm about to finish a grammar deck in anki with 620 cards or so though so that's nice.

I can listen to podcasts and stuff like that fairly easily but I'm not even halfway through n3 kanji, I think the vocabulary you learn when practicing for jlpt doesn't overlap a huge amount with the Japanese that people use while chitchatting

It also depends on how high your standard for "understanding" stuff is. A lot of people think they understand shit just because they grasp the context and their brain fills up the holes. I don't think it should count. You don't get shit unless you can pause at any moment and dissect complete meaning and context of every single sentence you hear/read. I do exactly that, and it's taken me forever to make it to volume 12 (I don't have a ton of time to read, to be fair). Kobako obviously missed out on a career as a taxonomist, or at least an entomologist.

While anime feels mostly solved translation-wise, there's still some older shows and kids anime like duel masters out there not getting subbed. Manga isn't in as good a place as anime, there's a lot more in that world with either an incomplete translation or nothing at all. It'll help tremendously for light novels and visual novels too, with how much slips through the cracks. Let's not forget all the drama CDs and radio shows too. Plus I've been getting into idols, and even a lot of the mainstream 48G content has no fucking subs somehow, let alone all the streams and content from other idol groups.

At this point I've probably forgotten a few of the shit ones that are only in there for historial reasons, but I'd say I remember about 2k off the top of my head.

I did 20 a day without an issue, and then did 100 vocab a day for a few weeks because of how easy core 4k becomes when you already know all the kanji. Past that point you start running into more unfamilar words so you have to cut it down to a more manageable pace, but learning 20 new things a day is really the minimum.

It's been a good few years since then, and I still remember them. SRS is a magical thing.

I don't think you understand, I HAVE read a lot(A LOT) of manga series. And I was able to do that because of Anki. Manga largely doesn't teach me anything new anymore, it's too basic. I don't know how large my actual vocabulary is, but I think it's a couple thousand words more than what I have in Anki. I've completed several 100+hour RPGs, watched hundreds of hours of Japanese television/anime without subtitles, about a hundred episodes of a Japanese podcast, the list goes on.
You're not wrong that I would have had more fun at the beginning if I had naturally acquired my foundational vocabulary, but you're wrong about the other part. I would be much farther behind where I am now if I had not used Anki.

This is a common misconstruance of reality. The thing that's remarkable about children's language acquisition abilities is the fact that they do it with no prior linguistic foundation, they aren't actually much faster at developing high-level language skill than adults. They attain low-functioning fluency at an early age, but children are typically not fully developed in their language abilities until high school. That's twelve years of active language building if we're being really conservative. Nips can clearly pronounce non "n" consonants because of っ, but they still pronounce every foreign word that ends in a consonant with either an "o" or a "u." This just grinds my gears.
