Other than that, we really needed more of her thoughts on Ray. However, she could have easily raised other children without some unnecessary subordinate and just ship Ray out when he was a child, but she didn't. Even if she did have some positive feelings towards Ray, she supressed them enough to control - when she thought he was dying, all she cared about was saving his brain as a perfect product. She was so deducated to surviving that she went through the pain of leaving Ray just to get a better product, but deep down she couldn't help but imagine the reality where she would be allowed to love all the kinds normally and become a good mom to Ray.

This also explains why Ray has been relegated to irrelevancy in the sidelines. If he had panel time, it would be more obvious he's gay for Norman. They've already had to block out what his face looked like while sleeping on Norman's shoulder.

Agreed, I don't hate the series/franchise, I think the premise and themes are interesting, the characters are serviceable enough (although I don't feel anything for them), and I think this would make for a FANTASTIC live action series, in the right hands.
It really is just a sloppy adaptation full of bad ideas. I'm actually shocked at how many people have said the anime looks "great". What exactly is great about it? It's decent half of the time, and awful the other half of the time. I'm perplexed.
Maybe I'll check out the manga, especially since this anime is only going to be like 12 episodes, and with the glacial pace it's moving at, I'll be lucky if the kids even escape the orphanage by the last episode. I'm assuming this arc is really just the prologue to the "real" story.

Read the manga now, it won't take you long to finish the first arc, and it's best to appreciate it in manga form (assuming they don't make a turnaround in quality).
Problem with the manga is that after the first arc it loses that sense of tension and becomes more generic, but it hasn't become straight up shit. We've basically just started the last arc now, which I'm tentatively hopeful about for spoiler reasons.

He's definitely been sidelined in Norman's absence, but I still think we're going to see somewhat of a mirror of the first arc, only with Ray in the mediator role instead of Norman. Emma needs him to put her ideal into action, after all.
