I think he's a bit of both, his origin is a lot like Krazy 8's with how he also worked for his hardworking father's small business which probably made no money, also the way Krazy 8 operated on his own by scheming with the DEA and ratting out competitors. And then later he becomes more like Jesse with how he's over the whole thing but can't extract himself

There was charming dialogue and character development. Any scene with Chuck in it was guaranteed to be gold, and the montages with Mike were all very well done. The production here was good, but with the exception of the final part with Lalo and Ziegler’s widow, none of that regular series charm came through. Oh, and the boxing match was a shade too retarded for me, though I did enjoy seeing Chad Howard knock Jimmy down.

There's no other way it can go down realistically. They wouldn't have a long scene of him planting a gun if it wasn't going to get used, and everyone else in this plotline is alive in Breaking Bad so Lalo has to be the one who gets shot.
